I spent two nights at Aguas Arriba in March 2014. I've traveled a lot and a few places I have stayed stand out as truly unique and memorable -- Aguas Arriba is one of them. Set in a breathtaking location on a remote lake overlooking glaciers and waterfalls, the hosts Pato and Ivor have created something extraordinary with this lodge and I would recommend it highly to anyone considering a trip to Patagonia.

My wife and I were lucky enough to spend 3 nights at Aguas Arriba Lodge for part of our honeymoon. We drove ourselves from El Calafate to El Chalten then continued down the dirt road for and hour or so to get to the boat launch on Lago Del Desierto. We were welcomed by Ivor the owner and Julia the guide and then we quickly met a family of Brits that were arriving to stay the same nights as us. It was pouring rain but we were already loving it. When we arrived at the lodge we were quickly treated to a wonderful lunch. Pato, Ivor, Julia and the entire staff were so warm and friendly we quickly felt at home. The Brits we happened to stay with were a blast and we quickly were acting like one big family. I don't think words can explain how cool this property actually is. The next couple days were spent hiking with Julia the trekking guide on trails around the lake. The evenings were spent having wonderful dinners, drinks and talking around the fire. If I could go on and on. But if you are even thinking about going just go. Our only complaint at the end of our stay was that we didn't stay longer.

A combination difficult to beat. Lakes, woods with a wonderful fauna, fishing, outstanding landscapes, nice accommodation and food, and better service. Today, it is hard to find such a wonderful and isolated place in Patagonia.

Nice location, nice chalet, excellent view, nice food, homemade products (bread), very nice staff (especially guide). Only problem: no noise isolation in rooms so you can hear your neighbours and I think that the price is too high for what you get. I guess 90% of the price is for the location. I would recommend to stay for a couple of nights also in El Chalten as they are some nice trekkings to do there and the village is nice.

We recently took a trip to Patagonia and wanted to incorporate unique places to stay into our trip experience. We found Aguas Arriba during our search and knew it needed to be one of our picks. The lodge is located on a beautiful lake, isolated from any traffic (you can only get there by boat...or hike in) nestled on the hillside with spectacular views of Fitz Roy. The lodge owners and staff couldn't have been more accommodating, caring, and welcoming. The food was wonderful, rooms well appointed, and we loved the great room with the huge fireplace, comfy seating, and views of the mountain and lake. We really enjoyed our guided hikes in the area. I only wish we would have stayed longer! Definitely will be coming back.

Room Tip: Request the rooms with the view of the Fitz Roy!

We just returned from a 3 weeks trip to Patagonia, and would like to share a hidden jewel, Aguas Arriba Lodge!

The lake is just an hour drive from El Chalten. The owners - the delightful couple Pato and Ivor - pick you up at the tiny dock and take you by boat to their exclusive five room lodge, which comprises the sole habitation on this exquisite, glacier rimmed lake. All meals, and guided hikes are included. Staff is fantastic and the place is whimsical. Plenty of unexplored hiking trails around, nice change from crowded trails of El Chalten.

We subsequently stayed at Explora Lodge in Torres Del Paine, a resort which defines luxury in Patagonia. Explora was indeed wonderful, but at three times the price of Aguas Arriba, and with much less the delightful sense of seclusion, Explora was only our second favorite stay.

After a few days serious trekking in El Chalten we moved up the valley to stay at the Aguas Arriba Lodge for a couple of days. Run as a relaxed, almost family, house with just 4 or 5 bedrooms this was the perfect place to relax. We did a couple of short treks, read books by the log fire, enjoyed the sun on the large wooden terrace overlooking the lake and mountains, woke up to a stunning view of Mt Fitzroy and made friends over a glass of wine or two.
