Head here first and then afterwards go down to the sea to see Ahu Tahai. Small but it explains a lot about the theories and has some interesting exhibits. You can walk from town in maybe 15 minutes.

It really is an excellent museum, actually more of an interpretation centre, and I would recommend you visit it on your first day. They've tried to provide various theories in an unbiased manner so you can form your own opinion on how the statues were moved etc. It's not easy to find a long walk out of town, so make sure you ask for directions before you go and also note that they close at 12.30 on a Saturday.

This is the only museum on Easter Island, and it is an excellent source of information with graphics. It is within walking distance of town. On the down side, it is a little short of original artifacts.

The museum has a select few moai, one a female of curious form, one a male with intricate ears. More importantly exhibits include a case of the weapons, a case of the carving devices and other associated displays.

Interesting artifacts, the huge ocean map is unusual and puts the location of the island in perspective, they have different language booklets if your Spanish is lacking, very good introduction to the local history, try to visit before going off on your own to explore.
