“Tropical gardens with a hotel attached”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2013

Rapa Nui is truly an amazing spot, but all travelers should remember how very isolated it is. If you want to go to a 5 star resort, go somewhere else. Hotel Otai was a typical tropical hotel. Simple furnishings, clean by any standards and yes, there are bugs. And yes, the chickens were our alarm clock.(also very typical for the tropics) Our room had a lovely patio to enjoy happy hours(we brought our own) and you could see the sunset and a sliver of the ocean. The pool was still closed but the workers provided my husband with lots to watch while they built new decks. It will be very nice when they are done. The breakfast was more than ample, with daily changes and the lady in the breakfast room was nice.Very close to town so you can walk anywhere for meals. The gardens are lovely and lead you from the street to your room along a flower lined path. What's not to like?

Room Tip: Farther from the street is quieter, ask for a patio

Is it worth a 5 hour flight from Santiago to visit Easter Island. Well I say yes. It was one of those places that had a magical feel to it. The bedroom was basic but clean and only 200 yards from the small harbour area. Breakfast was limited to cold ham, cheese and cereals. There were no tea/coffee making facilities in the room and no radio or TV (no problem there though!). It has a small bar but this was not open the 3 nights we were there but as it is heading to their winter this may explain it. It also has a small pool but this was closed for repairs. It is set in some lovely gardens but these are inhabited by chickens and the cockerels woke us up every morning around 5am!

Stayed here for only 2 short nights and wish we had longer really, such an interesting place to visit.

We were greeted with a cold drink on arrival and shown to our rooms, ours had a queen bed plus a single, a fridge, wardrobe, storage places a table, 2 chairs and out on the balcony a table and chairs.
Bed was very comfy and the air conditioner worked well.

Bathroom was OK, very clean, shower over bath, some shampoo and soap, all very clean,

Breakfast was buffet style and was a lot of very different types of food, from bread, cold meat and cereal to lemon meringue pie !
All served by the owners, very clean breakfast room and very attentive staff.

We also had a buffet dinner in the restaurant too and this was lovely home cooked food, very tasty and lots to chose from.

Swimming pool was empty at the time so couldn't experience it.

In a great location, just off the main street in town and at the end of the road is the beach, ideal place to stay.

This is a family-run hotel, but I'm not sure just how well the different members of the family communicate with each other. If you need something done, such as fixing the plumbing, you need to be sure to speak to the correct family member. On the positive side, the grounds are lovely with sidewalks passing between beautiful flowers and bushes. The hotel is centrally located in Hanga Roa, within walking distance of several restaurants. The rooms are large, basic, and adequate. There is a mini fridge in the room. The showers worked part-time (sometimes hot, sometimes cold, and sometimes not at all). Breakfast was okay, although you should plan to get there when they open or the food will be gone. Rapa Nui is such an incredible place! A little inconvenience is but a small price to pay and this hotel was not really all that bad.

Our group of 5 couples stayed at the Otai Hotel for three nights. We were welcomed in the afternoon with a cool drink and shown to our room which was near the pool. The grounds are beautiful. Our room was large and clean though basic. One couple did have ants in their room but were finally moved to another room. The breakfast was lovely, get there early if you want the best choice. The electricity did go off a couple of times one evening, but remember you are on a very remote. The location is close to everything, the shore, downtown and restaurants. The Japanese restaurant, a taxi ride away, opened especially for us on Monday and served us a delicious meal. Be ready for a memorable visit and tour of the whole island.

The introduction to this hotel was dismal. We arrived on a wet & rainy night. A group of 40 looking forward to our Easter Island experience. Instead we appeared to arrive unexpectedly - how I don't know as the flights are hardly often. Anyway, there were no lights, no assistance with bags, no umbrellas, no welcome drink, nothing. There was a complete lack of organisation. We were led dragging our bags along broken cobbles to our rooms - if you were lucky enough to actually get any assistance. We had asked if it was possible to get a drink and were advised yes, but having made our way to our rooms, dumping our bags we headed back to the "bar" to a locked door. After a veryyyyyyy long day this was unsatisfactory and we banged on the door till an attendant appeared and we managed to convey the fact that a few drinks would be appreciated. There were only 4 cold beers available, that's it, 4 beers. Eventually our tour guides went down the road and bought back beer & water, as no water was provided - even though they suggest that even though their water is fine to drink, it does upset those not used to it!!!!!. The rooms though are bare, basic and in reality, quite third world. The bathrooms walls are covered in wallpaper to look like tiles!!!!! The beds are so hard you end up quite sore and the pillows have been through the washing machine wayyyyy toooo many times. Air Conditioning is provided in most rooms, but that doesn't mean that it actually works and the bare, empty mini bar fridge in our room was so noisy that we unplugged it each night. There is also a pool at the hotel, but it was a shade of green that was not at all appealing. The wait staff for breakfast were pleasant and certainly tried hard to accommodate the requests of guests, but considering breakfast went from 8am to 10am, you want to be there by 9am as they weren't very good at replenishing items. The location, as with most places was central and very easy to get around. The Post Office is just across the road, and, for the cost of a smile they will happily stamp your passport to show your visit to Easter Island. Would I stay here again if I was ever for some strange reason to return - No.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that has both air conditioning & a fan, that way if one is too noisy, you have a...

A simple room (even the superior variety!) set in beautiful grounds but part of the unspoilt culture of the Island. You will love it, sat out at night watching the sun go down followed by the myriads of stars in the southern hemisphere. I have given it 3 stars because the room is basic and we had a couple of power cuts from the Island's generators; also a fried egg at breakfast cost me £1.44 !! But don't be put off by any of these just be prepared.

Room Tip: Choose superior
