We stayed at RICARDO TORRES Hotel Posada Suiza, it was very loud and dirty, breakfast is just old coffee and black bananas. Matresses are thin and felt like sleeping on sand. Just in one of the our rooms the fan was working, staff was not helpful at all, very unfriendly atmosphere! The owner, Mr. TORRES made pressure all the time to book tours. Payment was in advance, he cancelled two of tree tours and kept our money.
We went to Los LLanos, the tour was bad organized, they mixed up groups and we spend most of the time with collecting people.
This place is horrible!

Posada Suiza is a lovey family-run B&B in a convenient location in Merida. Ricardo and his wife are super-helpful and speak excellent English. We went in to find out about changing money, and ended up booking two superb adventures with their partner organisation Colibri Tours: the paragliding with condors and the 4 day trek in Los Llanos. Great value, lovely posada with a big shared kitchen, wifi and courtyard. My only negative would be that the room at the front (which we had) is directly on the Avenida, and - like much of Venezuela - there is traffic all through the night. But other than that, I'd highly recommend this place for their hospitality and convenient location just a few blocks from the plaza and some good restaurants.

Room Tip: Avoid ones on the main road!

DO NOT STAY HERE!

This hostel refused to recognise our prior booking and put my partner and I out on the street in Venezuela at midnight.

It went like this. I called Posada Suiza from the bus terminal in San Cristóbal at 5pm on Saturday May 29, 2010, and made a reservation in our names for a double room for that night. We told the person on the other end that we would be arriving between 11pm and 11.30pm that evening. This was confirmed in both Spanish and English and it was all very pleasant.

When we got there (11.15pm) the door was locked and we were left waiting on a dark street for 15 minutes before other guests arrived and let us in. When we finally tracked down the woman running the place she insisted they had no booking for us and that there were no rooms available. She was extremely rude and offhand in her manner and demanded that we get out of the hostel immediately, as if we were somehow out of line in showing up and asking for our room. When I asked to use the phone to call a taxi and another hostel she refused, walked over to the door and demanded we leave. She told us there was a hostel down the road and we should try there, and that she wanted us out immediately. The hostel down the road was dodgy and my partner and I ended up having to wander around the streets of Mérida at midnight with all our luggage trying to find a hostel.

I cannot argue with the comments of the negative review about this place being run by Jo Marie, who is a very friendly hard working parent. She's there with her two kids so the place feels homely and there is always something happening. Its not a quite Andean hostel, if you want that go somewhere else. The price is great, we paid 60 bolivars per person for a private room with bathroom, the beds are comfy and the bathroom nice and clean. They do have a problem with the pilot light in the boiler going out, but if you ask anyone they'll sort it out for you. It's a friendly place, if you're nice to them, they're nice to you. I think the negative reviews must have come from someone expecting a lot for less than $15 a night. If you like a family run posada atmosphere, with great views of the Andes, give Posada Suiza a try - also the tour operator based inside the posada is the best in the region, even if you don't stay there - book a trip with Harry to Los Llanos to catch Caymans and eat Piranha !
