“Fantastic experience, the complete package”
Reviewed 24 August 2012

We had a 3 night stay at Parakaupa, found the accommodation fantastic, basic but great for where we were, pretty surprised to get wifi, the staff were excellent and very accommodating, the tours were amazing, walking behind Sapo was probably one of the best experiences of my life! The trip to Angel Falls was quite hairy and it rained for most of it but we were rewarded by the most amazing view of Angel Falls both at the bottom and when we walked up to it (also a fabulous view from the camp by moonlight). The meal was probably the best I have had in Venezuela and the hammocks were fine but can be a little cold, make sure you take some extra clothes (particularly as you will probably get wet on the way up). The owners flew us out via Kavac to Santa Elena de Uairan (we needed 2 planes, 3 adults and our 3 kids) with some spectacular views of the Angel Falls and others on the way. This whole package was by far the highlight of our trip to Venezuela and probably the whole trip! The only advice I can give if you take your family probably not worth thinking too much about the risks you are taking during this trip because you may not enjoy it quite as much!

Room Tip: Choose room right down the end of the complex (bottom or top floor), as they are newer and quieter...

Just returned from a fantastic stay in Canaima and surroundings. Had real trouble geting to Canaima as our original flight from Valencia to Puerto Ordaz was delayed so we missed the connction to Canaima (all our internal flights in VZ have been delayed so be careful wit tight connections). Eventually managed to charter a private Cessna for the two of us which cost Bvs3600 but well worth it and a great way to travel (could get used to it!). We arrived in Canaima via somebreathtaking aerial views of the local falls to be greeted by some staff from Parakaupa. Upon arrival at the lodge we were provided with our lunch which they had kept warm despite us arriving at 1530 and then taken to our rooms. Big room with a/c and massive bathroom with hot water. All in all very comfortable, the food at the lodge was very good and they even have Wifi so my girlfriend was able to do some work that she had to do.

We did the excursion to Kavak which was fantastic, great aerial views of the Angel Falls (take some sick bags as the two people we were with threw up!) and a great excursion up to the pools at the Kavak falls.

We also did the overnight stay at the base of the Angel Falls and despite it being a very long (and cold) trip, it was well worth it. Try and have a swim at the bottom of the Angel Falls if you are up for it as the views are unreal. Only minor gripe is that there were no beers at the camp - I felt after a whole day in a canoe and hiking that I deserved a beer but nevermind.

All in all great service from the staff at Parakaupa and we will be back.

We spent 5 nights at Parakaupa. Parakaupa is beautiful: pleasant rooms, some of them quite big and with a nice waterfall view. The rooms are comfy and some have AC; bathrooms are elegant and sparkly clean; the food is PLENTY and realy good. What amazed me was the service. They really tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible. The waiter (Rodrigo) was attentive, careful and very pleasant (incredible service for the middle of nowhere!), the guide (Gonzalo) was always available, helpful and well informed.

Their tours (altough expensive) were worth every cent. I strongly recommend the day tour on the boat to the base of Angel Falls (starting at the dawn, swam at the base of the waterfall, campfire and barbecued chicken 4 lunch, incredible views of the tepuys plus mild rafting due to the low waters!). The Cessna day tour to Cueva Kavac is fantastic if the weather is good, so the pilot can fly over Angel Falls and through the canyons (adrenaline!).

We stayed at Parakaupa following a 5 night river trip from Kavak to Angel Falls staying in hammocks. We had two rooms, one or us and a triple for the three teenagers on the ground floor, no views other than across pretty gardens. Basic accommodation, ceilings fans, loud TV in the bar restaurant. The food was fairly basic but adequate. Each room had a hammock or two on the patio to relax in. A 5 minute walk to the airport, and local shops which comprised of a Bank, food/gift shop, Arty shop with local artesans gifts, An 8 minute walk to the Canaima beach with views of the falls. In general a nice place to clean up and spend journey recovery time. Would not want to spend more than a night or two. The staff were excellent in terms of getting everyone to their flights at the correct time.

We spent two nights at the Campamento Parakaupa at the end of a Venezuelan tour, flying up to Canaima from Santa Elena de Uairen.
What a wonderful setting for the lodgings! Just a short way from the Canaima Lagoon and its waterfalls and a short distance from the Canaima Airstrip.
We had a very basic but comfortable room with our own hammock strung outside. Meals were taken in the restaurant and were plentiful and good.
There are lovely tropical gardens and at night the sky was completely covered with stars, so clear was the atmosphere and so far from civilisation.
During our stay we took a flight over Angel Falls and various tepuis and also a boat trip on the the Canaima Lagoon to Sapo Falls. There we clambered down to the falls and took a heart-stopping walk along a narrow slippery ledge behind the waterfall. Not for the faint-hearted!
A really wonderful experience!

There are a few different places to stay but this looked like the best from the outside.
The food was excellent and plentiful. The rooms are spacious with some hot water. From the upstairs balcolny there are spectacular views across the lagoon to Hacha Falls. Sapo Falls are a quick boat trip and 20 minute walk away. Angel Falls is 3 hours by boat in October. Our guide (who came with the lodge) was lovely. I would recommend a visit at this time of year as there are hardly any other tourists to spoil your view of the falls but there is still a lot of water as it is the end of the wet season. Also, during the high season (July and August) you do not stay over at the falls which was the highlight of our trip. The different lodges in Canaima own different camps by the falls which only they can use. Parakaupa's is directly under the falls (about an hours walk). There is another camp on the other side of the river facing the falls. All the other lodges camps are futher away.

  • Liked — Proximity to Angel Falls and the view
  • Disliked — They tried to charge us for a lock we didn't break although this was resolved once we found an English speaker
