“Pretty bad”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2014 via mobile

This hotel is definately not more than 3 european stars. The rooms are old and waisted. The food is disgusting and the wifi works only in the lobby. The pool looks pretty nice though. The service is pretty bad and the prices are way too high!i try never to come back here.

This is just an expensive but awful place. Rooms are horrible. Bathrooms are in bad shape and outdated, with mold on the tiles. Rooms are not soundproof, so noise from hallway was an issue.

Rooms have a strong humidity smell.

Breakfast was just ok, but dinner was bad.

First time to the hotel.
Manual check-in, the staff gave the room remote tv (I guess people stealing stuff here) and found out that some of the remote button is not working anyway.
Very old building. Went in to the room, was very shock with the smell of carpet in the corridor. (see pic), it is like 100 years old carpet.... dirrrty.
No safety box.
Internet is available but slow and you have to re-login every 5 seconds !
Hire tennis court and hotel provided the racket without the grip tapes... (you can see the wood on it). Need to wash your hand after using it.
Breakfast is very basic; with "artificial" orange juice. Tried melon fruit one morning, and taste very sour.
Restaurant is decent/basic; one time no gas available, so they offer microwave food only.
Pool water is questionable, can not see more than 1 meter. In the pool you can not get towel unless you proved that you are stay there.... with breakfast letter for example. If towel is not returned BIG FINE for it.... you can buy a towel factory for it.
Surprisingly, during the breakfast some of the employee/waitress are taking the food from buffet as well.
Order the room service, after finished put back the tray at the corridor.... nobody took it until next day AFTERNOON.

Big potential but just lack of everything.

old furniture, stoneaged bathrooms, bad bad service (even for the venezuelan standards). The view from the room is so good, but the hotel needs an overall renovation.
The pool is beautiful, a nice bar next to it during night is a perfect date place. But, need to order everithing you need once you sit, cos service is too slow and not nice at all.
Is like 20 mins away from most places, and during rush (after 5 to 7 p.m.) might last up to 1 hour to get there. Ask in the front desk for taxis phone numbers, cos many out of there might be non-affiliated and wont be easy to find one that wants to get there.
During morning (5-7 a.m.) walk up to the hill (el morro), rent a bike 100 meters away from the hotel or walk next to the beach; is not a recomendable place to swin but you can work out safely.
500 meters away is this place (el cangrejo), go there before 5 p.m. Is ugly but the food is really good. a bit away is this other place (varadero), ask for a table outdoor (and order all food inmediately, same bad service), excelent place to drink and relax.
As a recomendation, uphill you're gonna find this white building and a sushi restaurant (tatami). If you don't like japanese food, the rissotto and seafood pasta is very recomendable.
DON'T EVER DINNER AT THE HOTEL. The food is expensive and not that good. Breaskfast is untill 11a.m., its ok.

Room Tip: Always ask for a room with view to the sea.

We stayed on Dec 2011 for 4 nights. I liked (1) View from our seaside room (2) pool, beach and great breakfasts (3) excellent location (4) nice service. I did not like (1) prices for the room were very high ($230 at the official exchange rate, probably $125 at open market dollars) (2) restaurant prices were also very high givenits quality (3) room smelled of moisture (4)TV reception was horrible.
For visitors I would recommend: be prepared for stickr shock, standards are not what you may be used to. Get a seaside room if you can. Get the included breakfast (it's a good deal). Still it is one of the better hotels in the area.

Since writing for Trip Advisor, I feel this has been the hardest review to prepare. On the one hand, this is (and could be) one of the nicest hotels in the world (and I'm hardly exaggerating). It's views across the bay, and its pool deck and gardens are simply lovely - a view I would never tire of. But on the other hand, the attitude to customers of some of the staff is just appaling - particularly at the front reception desk, and in the 'Tonina' restaurant where breakfast is served. I'll be more specific on each count:

I strongly recommend that you ask for a high room (5th floor) on the Caribbean sea side. I'd say rooms 525-531 would provide the best views; I stayed in 530, which was lovely. The free-shaped swimming pool is mirror flat, and the gardens are well layed out with neatly trimmed lawns. It was lovely to see a little wildlife around. Pelicans (strangely always flying south) are a common sight, as well as lizards/salamanders on the rocks near the water's edge. The water-side 'Gaviota' restaurant is beautiful, with nice lighting, and good service. Menu choices are a bit limited, but the view from the rail easly compensates. I was there in late November, and already the hotel was decked out in Christmas decorations that in places made it look magical.

However...

When I checked in, the staff at reception made me wait while they finished (what seemed to me to be) a trivial conversation. Front desk service did not improve through the week. I was working in the hotel, using the 'Baracuda' room, and every morning, reception seemed to get a kick out of making me wait (just) to have the door unlocked - five days straight! The conference facilities themselves were pretty poor. The table selection was more aking to dining hall style - either too big or too small. The lighting was not good, and the room would not sufficiently darken (using the badly fitted blinds) to show videos on the dim (low lumens) projector provided.

In my room, the TV was very old, and the picture fuzzy. There are very few English TV channels (just news from CNN, and BBC). The stupidest thing in my room was a self-locking patio door (which neither fit properly - big gap at the top). I'm no dummy, but I managed to lock myself out there. As I contemplated my fate, I telephone the hotel (lucky I had my mobile with me, and my room key with the number), and someone was sent up to save me - phew!

I was concerned that the shot bolt on my room door was missing, so I could not properly lock my door at night. And the AC in my room was noisy, and eith off, or icy - no middle ground.

Paper towels were nearly always absent in the public washrooms.

And the lift service was always SO slow.

Oh Punta Palma - you could be one of the nicest hotels in the world if you could just manage 'the small stuff' better...

Room Tip: It has to be Caribbean sea side. Rooms numbered 525-531 are probably the best ones (for the view).

On the plus side, the view is great and the outdoor pool seems nice. On the minus side, the rooms do not appear to have been upgraded for a long time - furniture is worn and scratched, toilets don't flush properly, rooms smell musty, TVs are small and older, and the table lamp in my room had a bulb balanced somewhat precariously on top. You are also at some distance from shops and most restaurants, if those are of interest. Bring your laptop if you want internet access because there is no business centre or other internet access.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the ocean.
