I have been going to game reserves since I was six months old (!), in South Africa, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, but I have never seen leopards as we saw them on Chief's Island while staying at Chief's Camp. Our guide, Sky, was superb and also the most amazing tracker. We were extremely impressed with his locating of our third leopard. The lion we saw were also wonderful as well as a pack of wild dog and many young, calm elephants.
The camp itself IS a little tired. While the main area is beautiful (the setting with its permanent water and seemingly permanent hippo is fantastic) and the fire pit is great, the rooms do need a bit of love. The furniture is a bit scuffed, mosquito nets (absolutely no mosquitoes in sight in July) have tears which have largely been patched up etc. The rooms are however extremely spacious and comfortable. The water in the bathroom is piping hot, there is a hairdryer, wifi etc etc. We watched hippo, elephant, bushbuck and hyena from our patio. There is also an emergency walkie-talkie in the room which is a great idea, but check that it is working. Our charger was broken and the batteries were flat... The bottom line though, is that if a 'wow' room is important to you, this is not it.
The staff are attentive and charming without being obsequious although they did not always pay attention to the details of our few requests: our wake-up call coffee order was not fulfilled (although this was rectified at our request), and our desire to share a beer at lunch was ignored, with two large beers presented. Food on the whole is good.
Overall a truly memorable experience and I would definitely recommend this camp to others.
