Stayed at the Hotel Manja two nights. They have two types of rooms, free standing Bungalows and concrete strip rooms arranged in two stories. We didin't stay in the bungalows, but they looked very basic. Greeted in room "A "by a large cockroach which we sprayed with DEET and sent out the door packing only to have it return again and that's when it met it's death. These are very basic rooms with just a thin shower curtain dividing the bathroom and bedroom area. The toilet ran all night and the shower dripped constantly; told management the next morning; the shower was fixed, but not the toilet. The lighting is terrible, so don't plan on reading your guide book! Good hot water in an icky shower, no A/C or fan. Mosquito netting provided and you will need it! The pillows are hard as rocks or feel like they are stuffed with hay. Laundry service provided and items returned in pretty good shape...just a shade darker! On the positive side, the hotels dinning room and food were great with a good choice of pasta, Malagasy food and at very reasonable prices. Just cover your drinks as an occasional frog, walking stick or gecko lands on the table. So eat there but only stay if you can't afford anything else in the area. It is fairly well located...about a 10 minute walk to the very small town and about 18 minutes to the thermal baths.

I actually didn't stay at this hotel....I saw the room and kept on walking up the road to a cleaner place. Having read a blog of someone being robbed here I could only picture it as something that could easily happen. THIS IS NOT A HOTEL. What it is is a collection of Malagy-style homes with NO windows but only wooden shutters to keep out bugs (which it didn't....unit I was shown on top of hill was full of wasps). Beds were very well used foam mattresses, bathroom was scary. I have stayed at plenty of these types of places but i draw the line at totally filthy huts with no windows. Go here if you are a <25 year old backpacker with a sense of adventure...otherwise don't don't don't do it. Go up the road and spend 80 USD at the Cetam Lodge. Oh and beware of agents in Tana selling this place to you!
