Just back from a week staying at Dar Said. Lovely hotel, lovely views, rooms clean, maids friendly. What a trick they are missing, no brochures of Tunis or attractions, no interest in guests, no suggestions of what to see. Tunisia is desperate for tourists, this attitude is not helping. Transfer from airport to hotel a rip off. Using a metered taxi it should cost max 20 dinars, hotel charges 80 dinars for their transfer service from airport. Staff need more training in the service industry.

The hotel is not fully booked on the day we arrived. So It is nice from the hotel staff to offer us the freedom to choose the room we like. We chose a sea view room, which is nice overlooking the sea. The view is partially blocked by the houses closer to the sea, but still attractive. The room is reasonably sized but the price is marginally high. Love the courtyard which is filled with Jasmine aroma. The breakfast is among the best of those we had in Tunisia.

Overall it is a pleasant stay and I will recommend this property if you would like to stay in Sidi Bou Said.

Whilst this hotel has a lovely location, the view is partly blocked by more recent development and staying there is ruined by awful customer service. On arrival we had to wait 30 minutes before our room was ready. On departure we were told very aggressively that we had not paid when we had email confirmation that we had. On presenting the email we were called liars and threatened with the police. After repeatedly asking to speak to the manager the receptionist did and eventually said we "had now paid." No apology was offered. We had to leave early and the promised early breakfast was not provided. The hotel said a taxi to the airport would cost 50DN if arranged through them. The cost of our taxi from the street outside was 7DN. The cost of a steam room in the hotel is 20DN. The cost in the local one 2DN. We had a fantastic holiday in Tunisia but the awful customer service and rip off attitudes at this hotel spoilt the end of our visit.

The Dar Said in Sidi Bou Said was the first of the group of historic property, boutique hotels to have opened in Tunisia in the last decade or so. The setting perched on a hill in the picturesque Sidi Bou Said makes it a wonderful place to stay. Rooms are each slightly different due to the old architecture, the Andalusian tile work adds to the warmth and special charm of the property. In nice weather, enjoying breakfast on the outside terrace only adds to this.
The above being said, the Dar Said is not shy about its price, which for hotels in Tunis, is pricey. This would all be far more acceptable if the service could always include a welcoming, warmth of hospitality. With repeated visits to Dar Said and as a hotel which we consistently book clients, the service levels are like the roulette wheel at a casino. Being a small property, staffing numbers are small. Thus, arriving when there is not much staff can make having your bags delivered to your room in a timely way, or similarly in checking, can be challenging. Asking for a refreshing glass of juice at a time other than breakfast (the hotel does not have a full working dining kitchen) can easily be met with a prompt, "no", as happened the other day. Only after describing a feeling of sweating and in need of thirst after much pleading, did someone manage to bring some juice. A hotel that prides itself on service would have had staff knowing that such a small request could have been answered originally with promptness and a smile. The resulting opinion of the hotel would have been totally different. Putting one's best foot forward from the beginning in service is a lesson that is sorely needed in the world of most Tunisian hotels...and this is coming from one who travels widely and frequently throughout the country.
Room 11 at the sound of constant water running through the night, as though a toilet in an adjoining room was not properly shut. Again, for the prices Dar Said asks, maintenance could be far better.
In short, we still recommend Dar Said because of its attractive setting and character, but this is not the first time we have mentioned such comments to management. Hopefully, they read Trip Advisor and will understand that clients, whether repeat clients or first time, must be valued at all times. To the contrary, if service was always friendly and maintenance continuous, I would have started this review by saying this is a fabulous place to stay in Tunis and worth every penny! Unfortunately, that review will have to wait for a future date.

Room Tip: Nearly all rooms have nice views, but make sure there is not a running water coming from an adjoinin...

Dar Said’s location is unrivalled, and the views stunning, but unfortunately the service does not live up to what should be one of Tunisia’s best boutique hotels.
I stayed here for night before, and the night of my wedding, and I was apparently given the best suite in the hotel. What is unfortunate about Dar Said is that the bathrooms are just so small and cramped and need updating.
At breakfast it takes ages to get served, there is only one poor, flustered waiter doing everything. Despite his efforts, what is supposed to a leisurely breakfast turns into practically an early lunch.
The pool doesn’t seem that clean or inviting, and it is often difficult to find anyone at reception, or anywhere to be honest to help you. We waited an hour and a half for water and a bottle of wine.

Dar Said is very lucky it has no competition. It enjoys a stunning location but it is understaffed and poorly maintained and, despite being listed in SLH (small luxury hotels) it is not in the least bit luxurious. SLH is mainly a marketing organisation to which you pay an annual membership fee and whilst it purports to monitor its members its selection criteria are pretty broad. The standard rooms at Dar Said are small and ordinary. If you plan to stay here consider booking a larger room, although the prices are way too high for the service that this place offers. Room decor is OK but in need of an upgrade; our door was almost impossible to open and the fridge was totally iced over but neither were attended to during our stay. The only people doing any work here are the female cleaners (excellent!) and the friendly woman who runs the spa/hammam. The male staff mainly sit around doing as little as possible. There is no porter; the pool staff (if they exist) did not appear during the three days we spent here; consequently the pool was full of leaves and there were no towels offered to guests. The breakfast is terminally slow because the one male staff member is totally disorganised. In summary, it might just pass for a four star hotel but the service and quality is three star at best.

It's a nice hotel full of charm and character. The hotel has a nice faded grandeur and a good location from which to mix with the locals.

Better value meals, outside of the hotel, are to be found nearer the railway station.

Although I enjoyed staying here I thought it was a bit expensive for what you get.

Room Tip: We were in room 3 which is supposed to have sea view but is mostly a view of palm trees.
