Mahatu Guest House & Hostel

This was not like any other hostel I've stayed in. It was more like a jungle lodge, only a fraction of the price. The setting is incredible, there's a lagoon with turtles and enormous fish, and it's surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. The facilities are great, they have a bar area, in which there were generally people drinking every night (the beer there is reasonable), a kitchen (the implements need re-stocking though), a table tennis table, and they provide free drinking water. The guy at reception, Carlos, was friendly and helpful, and spoke perfect English! Also, there's a great street BBQ place just down the road - cheap and delicious! We loved our time here, and would have stayed longer if we could.

Mahatu Guest House is in a great location, a 5-10 minute walk to the main town area, with a huge outside area and good facilities. The best though is the owner, who is always on hand to help and tries his best to make sure everything's sorted for your trip.

My friend and I took a trip to the Amazon after a year living in Bogotá and had an amazing time here. Luisa was a wonderful hostess providing us with loads of information and advice. It actually felt really sad to leave her at the end of the stay. It's an easy walk to the centre and the Amazon without being directly in the hustle and bustle of the city. Mahatu were very flexible with date changes and the rooms were cheap and everything you need and expect from a hostel.

If you're not looking for luxury this is a great place to stay.

Mahatu is a haven on the edge of Leticia. Very relaxed, Louisa is very helpful with local info
Communal areas good, includes pingpong table, pool and simple bar
Breakfast not included but we were coffee and fresh juice each morning
Rooms were spacious but pretty shabby
Kitchen utensils could do with replenishing
Drinking water provided but we were discouraged from refilling bottles, which was a little strange given its so cheap to refil the large sized containers and such a waste of plastic if people have to keep buying water themselves.

In short words: The best hostel that I stayed in my life!
Normally when I travel, I'm looking for the cheapest hostels just for sleeping, and better if also cooking, but when I arrived to Leticia, I and my girlfriend were looking for cheap hostels until we found Mahatu and I thought, come on, worthwhile to pay a bit more to stay here at least one night... finally we stayed there several days... hehehe
The place is really big, with a mini lagoon with a canoe, big fishes and turtles, fruit trees with many different seasoned fruits (bananas, coconuts, guayabas, guanabanas, mangos, etc), a big kitchen, hammocks with wifi spot, a bar, even a pool! Rooms are great, but would be better also some rooms with marriage beds and not just doubles.
Rene is a very nice and cozy guy.

Five minutes from town on a pond and across from the Brasilian border, this hostel attracts more rugged travelers.

Beds are comfortable and clean, but would be nice if the pillows were a bit thicker -- a problem throughout Colombia, I would add.

One thing I found that was really weird was that there was an infant child staying in the dormitory. Yes, really. After a while, the mother shared the bed with the child, but I think it is irresponsible of management to allow young children in a dormitory for adults. Very strange...and poor decision on behalf of management.

There's a bit of a hard sell on purchasing tours through the hostel, but this is to be expected at this kind of property, and the intent is very transparent.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep well, avoid the six-person dormitory on the top of a wooden building -- the ent...

We stayed at Mahatu guesthouse after being recommended from a chap at the airport. We live in the jungle in North Queensland, Australia. Therefore we are well used to all the native bugs & beetles that come with it & know how difficult it can be to keep them out of your kitchen, bathroom & living areas. After all you are in the Amazing Amazon!

Gustavo is a wealth of information & provided us with all the details of catching a boat on the Amazon, down to the best deals on changing money! Invaluable! Thanks Gustavo.

Some people may mistake Gustavo for not being friendly..... Not so. He is a very hard working, intelligent man that doesn't take crap, pure & simple. And has been around long enough to experience the petty incidences of the inexperienced traveller. No disrespect to fellow travelers, but when you reach the heart of the Amazon, you expect to be in a different world?

Accommodation in a private double with our own bathroom & fridge was perfect, as was the swimming pool to refresh in. A paddle around the lake was also gorgeous & gave a wonderful view of the flora & fauna of the property. Marx the resident monkey also paid us a visit to see if we had food on offer.

All in all, a wonderful stay where we also met loads of travelers from world wide all traveling in different directions. It's nice to buy a beer if they are on offer from any hostel, rather than bringing all your own alcohol, especially when the price is the same as buying from the supermarket. I guess it comes down to common respect. I would highly recommend a stay here whilst in Leticia.
