To stay at/with Omshanty will be one of the best decisions you can make when traveling in the Amazonas. (It definitely was ours in March, anyway.) You stay in cabanas right on the edge of the jungle. Take a municipal bus from Leticia heading north the road to Tarapacá and get off at the terminal stop “Km 11” (yes, it is 11 km from the noisy and uninteresting Leticia) and you will end up right in front of the Omshanty’s gate… or arrange with Omshanty a very reasonably priced pick-up from the Leticia’s airport. Kiké, the very helpful and straight forward Spanish owner and an experienced adventurist will always wait for you there. He will show you your cabana – equipped with bathroom, shower and a kitchenette; beds have mosquito nets (oh, how needed anywhere in the jungle!). The cabanas – connected with a wooden boardwalk system – might seem a little run down but they’re well kept as well as is the whole Omsahnty’s pleasant jungle setting where you will feel safe not only because it is fenced. If you don’t feel like cooking, arrange (an hour or two in advance) your meal at one of the three rustic outlets just across the road. Options are very usual and basic (rice, beans, plantains, beef/chicken/fish, tomatoes) but very good and cost very low… Please, don’t make the mistake leaving this part of the world, let alone Omshanty once you stay there, without at least two-day jungle trip with them. Our private expedition in March was lead by a local indigenous guide Walter became our top-favorite tour of our whole three-month trip in South America and a life-time experience, indeed. One night we were lucky to stay in la maloca, a sacred spiritual house to each indigenous tribe or village, and besides discussing other aspects of life in a jungle we were also able to find out about importance of the mambe. The next night we slept deep in the jungle woods (just in mosquito-netted hammocks), went night fishing and ate the fish Walter prepared on a camp fire. Walter not only knows everything about his selva (jungle) and shows you many of its beautiful secrets, but also is a very fun guy – someone you would like to take with you on a deserted island. Despite all the “danger” you may be afraid of in the jungle (esp. at night, when the wildlife’s intense symphony closes in upon you), you drop all the worries when with Walter. May the good spirits of the jungle bless him! Yep, if you really want to experience jungle, stay at Omshanty and definitely go for a jungle trip with them!
