“Experiencing jungle near Leticia”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

To stay at/with Omshanty will be one of the best decisions you can make when traveling in the Amazonas. (It definitely was ours in March, anyway.) You stay in cabanas right on the edge of the jungle. Take a municipal bus from Leticia heading north the road to Tarapacá and get off at the terminal stop “Km 11” (yes, it is 11 km from the noisy and uninteresting Leticia) and you will end up right in front of the Omshanty’s gate… or arrange with Omshanty a very reasonably priced pick-up from the Leticia’s airport. Kiké, the very helpful and straight forward Spanish owner and an experienced adventurist will always wait for you there. He will show you your cabana – equipped with bathroom, shower and a kitchenette; beds have mosquito nets (oh, how needed anywhere in the jungle!). The cabanas – connected with a wooden boardwalk system – might seem a little run down but they’re well kept as well as is the whole Omsahnty’s pleasant jungle setting where you will feel safe not only because it is fenced. If you don’t feel like cooking, arrange (an hour or two in advance) your meal at one of the three rustic outlets just across the road. Options are very usual and basic (rice, beans, plantains, beef/chicken/fish, tomatoes) but very good and cost very low… Please, don’t make the mistake leaving this part of the world, let alone Omshanty once you stay there, without at least two-day jungle trip with them. Our private expedition in March was lead by a local indigenous guide Walter became our top-favorite tour of our whole three-month trip in South America and a life-time experience, indeed. One night we were lucky to stay in la maloca, a sacred spiritual house to each indigenous tribe or village, and besides discussing other aspects of life in a jungle we were also able to find out about importance of the mambe. The next night we slept deep in the jungle woods (just in mosquito-netted hammocks), went night fishing and ate the fish Walter prepared on a camp fire. Walter not only knows everything about his selva (jungle) and shows you many of its beautiful secrets, but also is a very fun guy – someone you would like to take with you on a deserted island. Despite all the “danger” you may be afraid of in the jungle (esp. at night, when the wildlife’s intense symphony closes in upon you), you drop all the worries when with Walter. May the good spirits of the jungle bless him! Yep, if you really want to experience jungle, stay at Omshanty and definitely go for a jungle trip with them!

Really wonderful place, very peaceful in a beautiful jungle setting, with an amazingly beautiful river walking distance away. It´s much better than staying in Leticia, much more peaceful and beautiful and you can eat and buy basic things across the road. You can see all kinds of animals just outside the cabin, insects, birds and enormous butterflies! The mozzies aren´t too bad. The cabanas have everything you need, they´re comfortable and nice, you can cook and wash clothes and there´s not too many people. I recommend Omshanty for anyone!!

Omshanty is a good option to stay when travelling in the Amazon region. Very basic, small cabañas inside the selva, in a quiet place outside of the city, very well connected by the local bus and taxis .
Even the food in small restaurants across the road turned out to be the best in Leticia. ( we have tried several restaurants in Leticia, including one in Decameron , and the food was unbelievably bad, but the food in the local community was really tasty)
the owner Kikke has provided us with all the information necessary and recommendations and has organized 1day trips for us. He is really helpful and welcoming person

We were in Omshanty around 2 weeks ago. We fall in love with this place from the first moment, as it was exactly, what we were looking for: you do not need to go far away from civilization ( in this case, Leticia town) as we have small child with us , but still we were surrounded by very thick jungles. Kikke ( short version of his name Enrique) is very soft and gentle host , who can share his experience and tell you many things about plants and surroundings.

I spent almost a week at Omshanti at Leticia. Most people come to Leticia to experience the jungle, but stay in a hostal in town. What a pity!! in Omshanti you have the jungle and its nature sounds all around your cabin, nice and basic. Plus an indigenous Huitoto comunity right across the road with very friendly people as well as a little restaurant. Loved it here! Wynne from Holanda

Omshanty is outside of loud, unpleasant Leticia along the "road to nowhere" on Km11, which is an advantage as you are on the edge to the jungle and not in the not-so-nice city of Leticia. However, it's is very well conected by regular buses which have a sign that says "KM11". If you come from the airport, walk along the (only) road away from there for about 400m until the first intersection to the right and catch the bus at that corner. Tell the bus driver to drop u off at Omshanty.
We camped for one night at Omshanty. It's a really nice place that gives you the jungle-feeling you are looking for getting down there. Enrique is a great guy who seems to put much time and effort in keeping OmShanty the beautiful, laid-back refugio in the jungle that it is. We also went onto an excellent 3-days/2-nights tour that Enrique had organized. Enrique (who's actually from Spain and speaks very good English) is very well known in and arround Leticia and has good contacts to the Huitoto community. Therefore, we (altogether 5 guests) walked with 2 Huitoto guides and a translator to a Huito village where we were received very friendly. Spent the day in and around the tiny village and slept the first night in Hammocks in the Maloca. Next day we went on further into the jungle, were we built a camp for the night and went fishing to get some dinner, went onto a night-walk and had many very good talks. The guides and translator were very friendly, funny and knowledgable. The food that was provided was really good as well.

All in all, I highly recommend Enrique's Omshanty jungle refuge but also the tours he organizes.
