“stay at the airport”
Reviewed 18 November 2011

We only needed somewhere for 5 hours between flights so thought basic accommodation would be ok. However for the cost of it (there were 5 of us) we should have stayed at the airport like another group on our flights did. Just make sure you can cover up against insects and have insect repellent. I do not recommend the Transit Lounge if you are asthmatic!

Probably like most people we picked to stay here because it was close to the airport which suited our late night arrival at Tonga from NZ and our departure the next day for Vava'u. The place, even though we were expecting 'basic' was far less. This was is not so much a comment on the buildings, but on the cleanliness. Providing clean accommodation is not hard - a broom and mop can make a big difference. The one sheet on the bed had not been washed since ?, as a result we slept on top of the bed using the towels as a cover. The shower and toilet were rather revolting. The only thing we felt able to eat for breakfast was the dry biscuits and a cup of tea (after washing the cups). Actually, I think that is all there was, but no one was ever around to ask, it was a case of find it for yourself. The only time we saw Nancy, who seemed to run the place, was when she came around to find out about driving us down town. We know many Tongans struggle with little money and so we don't worry too much if we pay a bit more as they struggle to support themselves and family. We were not impressed however when the charges for the room magically doubled. Even at the quoted rate it was expensive.

Room Tip: Don't think there are any good rooms after sharing experiences with other guests.

We landed late and left early the next morning. Transport to and from the airport was included. The room was very basic, cold shower, crackers and jam for breakfast. It served its purpose.

This lodge was a great introduction to Tonga. It has a homely feel (Tongan style - don't expect a hotel). It was clean and there was fresh food (fruit, tea, coffee) on arrival and breakfast in the morning (fruit, cereal, tea, coffee). We stayed overnight, arriving late and leaving early the next morning to go on to Va'vau Island in the north. The airport pick up and drop off was part of the service, and for us as a group of seven (teenagers and friends) it worked well. It is what it says - a transit lodge.

Room Tip: Very basic by Western standards. Typically Tongan.

Our flight arrived at 1050pm from Sydney and our flight to Vava'u was at 0830am the next morning so we thought that we would get an extra hours sleep by staying close to the airport. The pick-up went fine and when we arrived at the lodge there was one person who pointed us to our "room" and then disappeared never to be seen again.

The place was filthy with cockroaches everywhere, mosquitoes and no flyscreen, smelly toilets and a cold shower that looked like you'd come out more dirty than when you went in. The beds were terrible and I hate to think when the last time the sheets were washed, our room didn't even have a working light.

I've stayed in similar hovels in India, which is fine when paying a couple of dollars a night, not US$50 which is what my girlfriend and I were charged.

In the future I would take the extra time to go into town to somewhere nicer seeing as we got almost no sleep anyway, or just crash in the terminal and spend my $50 on a bottle of duty free instead.

Oh and the free "breakfast"........dry crackers from an open container in the roach infested kitchen......

We arrived into Tonga on a flight at 2am, and were due to fly out on a domestic flight at 10am the same day. We needed somewhere to stay near the airport for a few hours sleep. The Transit Lodge is just a 5 minute drive. It is very basic, but clean and the beds are comfortable. Breakfast was included in the rate. The showers had sporadic hot water. There is no airconditioning, but fans are OK. I'd stay there again under similar circumstances. The Lodge is well named, it is a place to transit through only.
As it happened, our domestic flight was cancelled, and the owner of FTL did a great job providing us with transport into Nuku'alofa, and then out to a resort where we stayed for a few days while waiting for a new domestic flight.
As a place to transit, this is fine. Phone the lodge to make your booking, you will probably get a better rate than over the web. Free pickup at the airport was great too - especially given the time of the night we arrived.
