“Thoroughly spoilt”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

I stayed for 7 nights and was thoroughly spoilt by the owners and staff who were so friendly and accommodating. I had a wonderful relaxing and fun time a Heilala and recommend it to anyone. The room facilities were so clean and quiet, I slept so well and the food was delicious and tasty. The free city trip offered by Heilala was great and gave me the chance to stock up as well as visit the town. They also offer all the main attractions and were so helpful with booking and advice. Lovely beach and gardens.I recommend the freshly made Pina Coladas.I can not recommend Heilala enough. Jenny

We stayed at Heilala for three nights. Overall, this place is really nice. The accomodation is nice and clean, and the atmosphere was very quiet and relaxing. We ate in the restaurant the whole time, and the food was good, although the lunches could be a little stingy! A word of warning about the beach - it's really nice, but you can essentially only swim at high tide, something no-one told us when we arrived. It can be a bit of a pain when it is really hot.

Friendly, unpretentious and good value.
We just spent six nights here and really liked it. It's not the most deluxe place but frankly we don't need the tinkly-tinkly stuff when all we want is a bit of beach time and to relax. Nice beach, although not much good for swimming an hour or so each side of low tide. The food is pretty straightforward so we only ate there once or twice but the bungalow was absolutely fine and had a great little porch facing the evening sun at gin o'clock. There's a communal kitchen that people rarely used but we cooked for ourselves in there a couple of nights and just ate in the garden down near the water - perfect. Bring a coffee plunger and coffee if, like us, you don't do instant. We made plenty of caffeine-deprived friends with our plunger every morning.
It's located at the furthest point on the island from town and from the airport. We took the bus one day (two bucks) and then hired a car to get around (Fab Rentals were, well, Fab). Took 30mins exactly to town so location is not an issue
You get more than what you pay for here. Nice engaging staff. Recommended for a cheap break.

Room Tip: Grab a fale with a fridge if you can - it'll save you traipsing up to the kitchen to get another...

From the second we arrived at the airport, greeted by Tina wreathed in smiles and brandishing a lei we knew we were in for a real treat. We chose Heilala largely from trip advisor reviews and are so glad we did as all the glowing reports were nothing but accurate. Tonga is unique in the pacific, as it is still largely untouched by mass tourism, and so the pace of life is authentically chilled. There are no big malls, no Mc D's, no invasive international chains. It is not the place to go for sophisticated five star hotels, where you could be absolutely anywhere in the world - in Tonga you can be nowhere BUT Tonga, and this is especially true of Heilala. The staff at Heilala were truly wonderful, happy to help in any way they could to make our trip even better.
We had a superior fale, which was great as it came with a fridge, a comfier double bed and tea making facilities, but it is a very short walk to a shared kitchen and all accommodation is spotlessly clean and well appointed (considering the budget). The beach is beautiful, we saw whales at the edge of the reef as well as breaching in the far distance - but for a really good whale experience I suggest you head to ha'api or va'vau... We had three or more choices at dinner, which was ample, freshly cooked and delicious. The fish is especially good, of course! Do bring with you, rather than plan to buy, your essentials - especially if you have special dietary needs. I also suggest that if you have your own snorkelling gear, bring it - although Heilala has a good supply it is nice to use your own. Kayaks and scooters are available for a very reasonable extra fee - just be sure that you have good insurance that will cover the replacement value of the scooters, which seem brand new.
Finally, huge thanks to Kalolina, Lalo, Tina, Linda, Mele, Martin, Greta and everyone else whose names we have wrong or have inadvertently forgotten, for a wonderful time. Where else would the proprietor get out of bed to hug her guests goodbye? Only in Tonga ...

This was my third visit to Tonga over the past year and have stayed at Heilala each time. The accommodation (standard room this time) was clean and functional and only a short distance from the communal toilets and shower in one direction and kitchen in the other. The tropical breakfasts were yummy and the dinners we had did not disappoint. There are lots of pluses staying at Heilala, most importantly the friendly staff and owners (Sven and Karolina) who do everything to ensure your stay is perfect. A welcome addition to their services was the motorcycles for hire to travel around the island. I have no hesitation recommending a stay at Heilala and will definitely be back.

Room: Bungalow roomy, clean and functional. Bed a bit firm, but not uncomfortably so. Table and chairs that also fit on small patio/front balcony. Even numbered rooms have afternoon sun on patio. The bungalows have hammocks that fit on front balcony, nice place to read or nap. Bunglows are far enough apart to assure privacy.

Public areas: Lots of outside seating, hammocks and a nice well kept beach. Communal kitchen functional if a bit small. Small bookshelf with book exchange, iMac and TV available. Great garden with informational signs next to local plants.

Food: Restaurant on site serves one dish per night, take it or leave it, but during the total 7 days I stayed I only had the same dish once. Dinner tasty and well prepared and very fairly priced. Breakfast can easily and cheaply be extended if the two pieces of toast and fruit isn´t enough.

Heilala offers a lot of freebies, including a city orientation tour, snorkeling gear, reef shoes, beach towel, bikes, and a few things for a charge (kayak for instance) That means they actually are a good value even though other resorts closed by may be cheaper if you just compare room/room-rates. Just the fact that they have free filtered rain water for you to drink means you save a lot on buying water, not to mention dragging water bottles from town or the shop on the main road.

I can not find anything but good things to say about Heilala and can recommend it to other independent travellers as well as couples or groups of friends.

Room Tip: Bungalows with even numbers have sun on the patio in the afternoon, those with odd numbers have sun...

We spent 7 days at Heilala in a superior fale and loved every minute. The staff are friendly and helpful, special thanks to Tina who met us at the airport with big smile and beautiful lei, she also is a waitress and an impressive dancer.
The fale was comfortable and clean, the free fruit and toast breakfasts delicious and we ordered eggs and pancakes as extras. The evening meals were delicious with mainly tuna, snapper or chicken available cooked a different way each night.
There were 2 nights where the kitchen closed, no reason given, but guests were offered a ride to neighbouring resort of choice instead, this worked well with return tripped arranged at no cost, we also got to experience other restaurants and make new friends.
The beach is lovely with plenty of shadey trees to sit under while watching the whales frolick beyond the reef.
Sven and Karolina are friendly and go the extra mile to accommodate everyone, when our return trip was delayed by 5 hours and we would of missed out on dinner, he arranged for Tina to take 6 of us to Friends Cafe in Nukualofa en route to airport for a meal.
The overall feeling at Heilala is tranquilty, you can cycle, kayak, surf, snorkel, or just sit on the beach or fale deck with a cool drink and enjoy the sound of the sea.
I would have no hesitation in returning to Heilala in the future.

Room Tip: Well worth superior fale with fridge and coffee/tea facilities.
