“A wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

We organised a 5 night romantic holiday for two with Heilala Holiday Resort based on the Trip Advisor feed back and we were not disappointed.

The hotel pick-up was waiting for us on arrival with a lei each, a wonderful touch. We were driven about 40mins to the lodge and shown to our rooms by Aleki who explained the room to us well.
We stayed in a Superior Fale, and it was well worth it for the fridge.
The room has netting on all of the windows and we never really found mosquitos to be a problem in the room though Im thankful I bought a can of repellant for outside. There is a fan that kept us cool and slat windows that we kept open all night for the breeze.
The bathroom is very adaquet, very clean, and I liked that the towels and linen were changed every other day to save water.

The lodge is had a wonderful feel, quiet and relaxing, there were no kids during our stay there. There has been a real effort made to keep the garden looking nice and all the tropical plants are named for your knowledge.
The beach is a short walk from the fale as is the restaurant.
The restaurant serves one dish a night, with a vegetarian option, we had one lunch and one dinner at Heilala and both were delicious!!
As you can see on a map, Heilala is quite a distance from Nukualofa ($35-$40 taxi) which is about the only drawback. For dinners, we visited the resorts down the beach (to the left) Vakaloa Resort and Likualofa Resort for more dining options. We found Vakaloa to be the better (and closer).
We enjoyed the daily breakfast consisting of a yummy plate of fruit and some toast with jam, a great start to the day.
We had heard supermarkets weren't really a thing in Tonga, and variety is limited, so we took with us some cheese and crackers, relish and salami.
This was perfect for snacking at our leisure, as we found snacks arent really a thing you can easily source in tonga either. Though the hotel has a range of drinks for purchase, dont be afraid of drinking the rain water the resort collects, it is SO delicious!

The beach has a lot of washed up coral and reef shoes come in really handy. The sand is quite coarse which means you sink into it up to your ankles when walking, which gives you a work out :)
The ocean is best for swimming at high tide, other times youll find yourself shin deep walking about on coral.

We found there are heaps of activities to do when you are in Tonga, we took the free-for-all bikes from Heilala and went for a ride to Able Tasmans landing spot near by, and the 'dairy' down the street too.
We took the charge by the hour kayaks for a burn at high tide.
Snorkling equiptment was slim pickings, so I would highly recommned bringing your own, though we made use of the free beachtowel lending from the office.
The resort organised a day tour for us with Vai, a local tour driver, which was amazing and I highly recommend it!
Also, after a recommendation, we took a day trip to the Royal Sunset Resort at Atata Island which was the highlight of our tour! Organised by Friends cafe in Nuku'alofa, we took a local bus from Heilala at 8am and then a taxi to the wharf where the boat was waiting to take us on a 40 minute boat ride to the most gorgeous little pacific island where all the water sports activities are free, unlike other islands, and it includes a lunch where you can pick anything from their menu. We one of 3 couples at the resort that day, luxury!
Plus they take you snorkling to a beautiful reef to see an abundance of sealife.
Also, we HIGHLY recommend the Oholei Resort dinner and show, which we booked through Heilala, the food was amazing, and the show was very fun!

So overall, a wonderfully memorable holiday!
Thank you, Heilala team!!

Room Tip: Superior room has a fridge, which is wonderful for keeping your water cold, or any snacks you bring...

Five nights made perfect by great staff and a great facility, great value for money. The room was well prepared, clean and everything we needed. I was impressed by the extras that came free from the daily drop off in Nuku Alofa, the bikes to the help yourself to the bananas. Sven sorted everything for us, Carolina (apologies for spelling if not right) is a fantastic guide with a down to earth and amusing portrayal of life and the sights you are seeing in Tonga. The day out and about on the scooter was a highlight and the beach and swimming delivered the relaxation we were in need of.

I stayed for 7 nights and was thoroughly spoilt by the owners and staff who were so friendly and accommodating. I had a wonderful relaxing and fun time a Heilala and recommend it to anyone. The room facilities were so clean and quiet, I slept so well and the food was delicious and tasty. The free city trip offered by Heilala was great and gave me the chance to stock up as well as visit the town. They also offer all the main attractions and were so helpful with booking and advice. Lovely beach and gardens.I recommend the freshly made Pina Coladas.I can not recommend Heilala enough. Jenny

We stayed at Heilala for three nights. Overall, this place is really nice. The accomodation is nice and clean, and the atmosphere was very quiet and relaxing. We ate in the restaurant the whole time, and the food was good, although the lunches could be a little stingy! A word of warning about the beach - it's really nice, but you can essentially only swim at high tide, something no-one told us when we arrived. It can be a bit of a pain when it is really hot.

Friendly, unpretentious and good value.
We just spent six nights here and really liked it. It's not the most deluxe place but frankly we don't need the tinkly-tinkly stuff when all we want is a bit of beach time and to relax. Nice beach, although not much good for swimming an hour or so each side of low tide. The food is pretty straightforward so we only ate there once or twice but the bungalow was absolutely fine and had a great little porch facing the evening sun at gin o'clock. There's a communal kitchen that people rarely used but we cooked for ourselves in there a couple of nights and just ate in the garden down near the water - perfect. Bring a coffee plunger and coffee if, like us, you don't do instant. We made plenty of caffeine-deprived friends with our plunger every morning.
It's located at the furthest point on the island from town and from the airport. We took the bus one day (two bucks) and then hired a car to get around (Fab Rentals were, well, Fab). Took 30mins exactly to town so location is not an issue
You get more than what you pay for here. Nice engaging staff. Recommended for a cheap break.

Room Tip: Grab a fale with a fridge if you can - it'll save you traipsing up to the kitchen to get another...

From the second we arrived at the airport, greeted by Tina wreathed in smiles and brandishing a lei we knew we were in for a real treat. We chose Heilala largely from trip advisor reviews and are so glad we did as all the glowing reports were nothing but accurate. Tonga is unique in the pacific, as it is still largely untouched by mass tourism, and so the pace of life is authentically chilled. There are no big malls, no Mc D's, no invasive international chains. It is not the place to go for sophisticated five star hotels, where you could be absolutely anywhere in the world - in Tonga you can be nowhere BUT Tonga, and this is especially true of Heilala. The staff at Heilala were truly wonderful, happy to help in any way they could to make our trip even better.
We had a superior fale, which was great as it came with a fridge, a comfier double bed and tea making facilities, but it is a very short walk to a shared kitchen and all accommodation is spotlessly clean and well appointed (considering the budget). The beach is beautiful, we saw whales at the edge of the reef as well as breaching in the far distance - but for a really good whale experience I suggest you head to ha'api or va'vau... We had three or more choices at dinner, which was ample, freshly cooked and delicious. The fish is especially good, of course! Do bring with you, rather than plan to buy, your essentials - especially if you have special dietary needs. I also suggest that if you have your own snorkelling gear, bring it - although Heilala has a good supply it is nice to use your own. Kayaks and scooters are available for a very reasonable extra fee - just be sure that you have good insurance that will cover the replacement value of the scooters, which seem brand new.
Finally, huge thanks to Kalolina, Lalo, Tina, Linda, Mele, Martin, Greta and everyone else whose names we have wrong or have inadvertently forgotten, for a wonderful time. Where else would the proprietor get out of bed to hug her guests goodbye? Only in Tonga ...

This was my third visit to Tonga over the past year and have stayed at Heilala each time. The accommodation (standard room this time) was clean and functional and only a short distance from the communal toilets and shower in one direction and kitchen in the other. The tropical breakfasts were yummy and the dinners we had did not disappoint. There are lots of pluses staying at Heilala, most importantly the friendly staff and owners (Sven and Karolina) who do everything to ensure your stay is perfect. A welcome addition to their services was the motorcycles for hire to travel around the island. I have no hesitation recommending a stay at Heilala and will definitely be back.
