“Don's tour”
Reviewed 21 July 2012

Four of us did a full-day tour in mid-July, 2012. One of the proprietors of this business, Don, was an amiable and helpful guide. His boat is a small, open catamaran with a sun-shade.His boat is not a fancy cruiser or yacht, and though seemingly basic, it was well-suited for the tour he provided. We went to several snorkelling sites, and Don sought to give us the sort of tour we wanted - namely an opportunity to swim along coral reefs and visit unspoiled islands. He provided lunch, and the overall cost was very reasonable. It is suited to anyone who wants to swim and snorkel and to enjoy the islands away from the main town of Neafu.

We strongly recommend it.

“Best way to see the outer islands.”
Reviewed 28 May 2012

We took two day trips with Hakau Adventures and I recommend doing both.
Trip one: We went to swallow's cave and snorkeled. Amazing, thousands and thousands of itty bitty fish below and a view of the cave with a peep hole to the sky above. Then we went to a long reef area which I think Don (the excellent captain) called Coral Gardens. I am not a diver but I have done my fair share of snorkeling around the world and that was one of if not the most spectacular underwater life I have ever seen. Star fish of many colours, especially a bright royal blue. Breathtaking. We then pulled up to our own private beach on our own private island. The really nice thing with Don's boat is that it pulls right up onto the beach and while traveling you get a 360 degree unobstructed view of the wonder that are the islands around Vava'u.
Trip Two: Don suggested if we wanted to go out another day that we should see "the east side" so since we had such a great time the first trip we thought it would be worth our while. Best advice I have ever taken. It was a longer trip out but it was nice to just sit on the front of the boat looking into the most amazing colour blue I have ever seen and the beautiful greens you come to expect from the Caribbean. We stopped at Mafana island where you can stay in a Fale or tent overnight. Very Robinson Caruso and may try it if we are back this way again. We went for a snorkel around the island and saw an eel moving through the sand which Don pointed out is rare as they are usually hiding in the rocks so you only get to see their heads. Stayed here for lunch and after lunch went to the disappearing island. It was just a spit of beach that appears at low tide and it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. We returned to Neiafu after a couple of other stops to snorkel. Pink starfish, who knew?
So two trips, two days, many, many memories that will be hard to surpass. Don was an excellent captain, very informative. Very relaxed and accommodating.
Thanks Don. You Rock.

Me and a buddy travelled to Tonga in January and visited Neiafu. We manage to catch the maiden voyage aboard Hakau 1. Don and Laurie the operators were very hospitable and friendly and gave us a great tour. The beaches and snorkelling are first class in a truly untouched paradise. Visiting swallows cave, the disappearing island, and even a potential show site for the hit TV series survivor! If your going to be in the south pacific this is one excursion that makes the trip worth it.
