“Choose another lodge!!!”
Reviewed 31 August 2012

My husband and I stayed here for 1 night, and I'm really thankful we didn't have to stay longer than that!!

We stayed in 6 different lodges during our 10 day safari, and I can easily say that this was definitely the worst of them all. We were put up in a tented camp; the tent was SO small and dingy, I actually got super claustrophobic! To add to it, the tent was a dark bottle green in color, which actually made it appear even smaller in size than it was :( We asked for a room since they seemed bigger and better, but the hotel was totally booked so we had to put up with our tent.

We had to set up our own lamp (they just have 1 small tiny one), remove the mosquito net from the bed, and keep the bathroom doorflap open to give it a more spacious feel since I started getting breathless in there.

The washbasins in the tents do not have any hot water facility (just a single tap). When we entered our tent, we were cold and wet from the rain, and not having hot water in the washbasin was a total let down. The shower does have hot water, thank god for that.

The restaurant is an indoor room, which is disappointing since they could've easily had an open air kind of facility.

For our morning breakfast the next day, we showed up at 7 am, but breakfast wasn't served until 7:30 am (although I believe they say that breakfast starts at 6:30 am itself), so that delayed our departure. :(

The lodge itself is quite beautiful, but I'm sorry to say that I was dying to get out of this place.

I will add, however, that the service was really good. We wanted hot water which was only served in the restaurant, but since it started raining, they had it sent to our room without any extra charges, and without us having to request it.

Overall, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Room Tip: Tented camps are super tiny, it might be better to ask for a room.

We stayed here for 2 nights in late July/beginning of August 2012 as part of a private safari through northern and western Kenya. This was our 4th trip to Kenya.

ACCOMODATION
Lake Naivasha Resort has both en suite tents and cottages that were in blocks of two rooms in each. We stayed in a cottage which looked lovely from outside, but was very basic, dark and dusty/shabby from inside. We could definitly hear our neighbours (and friends that we travelled with) talking etc next door. Even though the resort claims to be fairly new, the white paint already started to fall off from some parts of the walls. It consisted of a double-bed with mosquito netting, table, TV, wardrobes and adjoined bathroom with bathtube/shower. The cleaning of the room wasn`t perfect and a whole colony of bats made loud noises just outside our window during most of the night. There were lots of mosquitoes during late afternoon/night.

HOTEL GROUNDS
The hotel grounds are lovely with huge gardens, flowers and birds everywhere. There is a swimmingpool (that needs cleaning) with sunloungers next to it. Further down on the property towards the boats channel at the lake, there was a swamp where water birds like ibises, storks, jacana and also a waterbuck family has their home. Apart from the reception area with internet facilities, there is an indoor restaurant and a bar outside.

FOOD
Food in the dark indoor restaurant was good, menu style for all meals, but it was boring that the restaurant was inside instead of outside in their beautiful garden. We asked to sit outside during lunch though and they decorated a table in the garden, so this was not a problem at all.

STAFF
Staff was friendly and helpful. During our second day, there was no electricity at all and the staff informed us that parts of the generator were stolen (?). We had no hot water for the whole second day and night in our room because of that. We also desperately needed help charging camera batteries and we got help in their office with that, so they must have some sort of back-up generator for reception and office part of the resort.

EXCURSIONS
We did 2 boat trips on the lake and the guide from the resort was just amazing! We saw so many birds close-up like pied kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, giant kingfishers, jacana with babies, cormorants¸ herons, pelicans, sunbirds, fish eagles, sea gulls and also hippos, water bucks and so on! The excursion to Crescent Island and to be able to walk relaxing amongst herbivores like zebras and giraffes was also very interesting and we really enjoyed it!

OTHER COMMENTS
During our last night at Lake Naivasha Resort, I started feeling very sick and by morning, I had to throw up several times and had very bad diarria. This just got worse on our way to Masai Mara and I also had a temperature/fever of over 40 degrees that night and had to be taken to Talek Hospital/Health Center the following day for treatment/medicine/antibiotics. The cause could have been a combination of dehydration and food poisioning, because the doctor saw an infection in my blood tests, but I guess we will never be sure about what I really had and what caused it. I started feeling better though after a few days of medication.

CONCLUSION
We didn`t like the basic rooms at Lake Naivasha Resort and this is where I got really sick for some reason, the restaurant was dark and felt like an indoor school cantine, we had no electricity nor hot water for the second day/night at all, but the hotel grounds and gardens were lovely, food good and staff friendly. Most of all, we enjoyed the interesting excursions on offer at Lake Naivasha – the boat trips and nature walk on Crescent Island. If you`re looking for an affordable, basic and friendly place to unwind at Lake Naivasha, then this could be the right place for you, but I guess you get what you pay for, and for us, the accommodation was just too basic and if we ever get back to Lake Naivasha, we would choose to pay more and stay at a more upmarket lodge instead.

We spent 2 nights here, the staff were very welcoming and gave us a choice of large tents with showers and toilets or chalet type rooms. We chose the chalets as they were larger. The rooms were a good size and had a nice dressing area off the shower room. The rooms were slightly shabby but clean and comfortable. It was the only place we stayed in our safari that provided toiletries. The food was fine and they were happy to provide fish when my daughter sadi she didn't eat meat. We had a very nice boat ride from the hotel grounds to see hippos and fish eagles. We also took a trip to Hells Gate NP, the hotel provided us with a massive packed lunch. There were pretty gardens and an attractive swimming pool, unfortunately this wasn't heated and the water was freezing.

They took over 2 hours to get our rooms ready. Food ranged from uninspired to bad. Shower facility was particularly poor. The positives: staff was sweet and helpful, grounds prettily landscaped, convenient boat rides to the lake.

On an 8 day safari through Samburu, Nakuru, Maasai Mara, Navaisha and Amboseli, this was by far the biggest disappointment of the trip. We arrived at the lodge between 12:00- 1:00 p.m. and our room was not ready. We were escorted to the restaurant and served lunch. The food was good and of large portions. After lunch our room was still not ready so we left to do drive up to Hell's Gate State Park to do some hiking.

When returning back to the lodge, our room was ready. We walked into to a less than appealing room with mosquito nets filled with dead mosquitoes, live mosquitoes on the walls and old, beat up flip-flops on the floor. The toilet was dingy, dirty and old. If I hadn't been sweaty from the hiking there is no way I would have showered in there, but I had no other choice.

We asked the reception for another accommodation and were shown a tent, but it only had 1 bed, and as there were 2 travelers we opted to stay in our room, still unhappy. The staff sprayed our room while we were at dinner. When we returned from dinner the room was free of mosquitoes, but we did not use the disgusting nets.
Throughout the night, we could hear others in the buildling talking, snoring and using the toilet. Needless to say, the sleep quality in the lodge was poor.

Overall the food was great. The service was average and the property itself is bad. Choose something else and stay clear of this place. I've stayed in cleaner hostels than this plac. We were thankful to only be here 1 night for a very short time.

Internet was available, did not use it.
