“If paradise exists, it is spelled "Hippo Point".”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2010

We have just returned from the White Highlands in Kenya, having spent 5 days at Hippo Point Estate. This is NOT a hotel, it is a very special, personal place. Imagine having a castle of one´s own in the middle of Africa. With pure virgin bush as surroundings, in spite of Naivasha Town having risen dramatically in population the last 10 years. Hippo point is all solitude, charm, gracious living, perfect, attentive and very discrete service, coupled with magnificent surroundings. No other place comes even remotely near what Hippo Point has to offer. It is a wonderful site for a wedding, a honeymoon or just a few days of relaxation to share with that very special person in Your life. It is a mirage created by mrs Dodo Cunningham-Reid and it etches into Your soul. And never leaves.
Go to their website and see the pictures. Imagine Yourself to be there, as the only guests. It is even better in real life! Words fail to find a single fault with the place. Or its employees. Then, start saving up and send them a booking request, for having seen the pictures and read the text, You simply cannot stay at home anymore...

We've travelled quite all around the world. We love beautiful places. For us, Hippo Point is one of the most beautiful place in the world ! It was the first stop of our Kenyan trip. It is not really a hotel. It is rather a home with not so many rooms and not so many people.

The fantastic thing is that this (beautiful) mansion is built in a small land between two lakes with a lot of animals on it. One of the lake (Naivasha) is a large non-salty lake with a lot of birds. The second one (I don't rember the name) is a salty lake with (a lot) of pink flamingos and hippos. When in Hippo Point, you can walk to both lake very easily in 10 minutes (usually with a guide of Hippo Point, but we did a lot of times alone). On the land there are many animals staying around (girafes, zebras, antilopes, monkeys, etc.) As there are no lions or dangerous animals, you can walk on your own in the (huge) garden and meet these animals very close to you. It is simply unbelievable for people like us who love animals (and birds).

You can also make a night drive with the guide in the property to watch hippos out of the lake and a lot of other animals hunting at night (hyenas, foxes, etc.)

Rooms are very comfortable and furnished with very good taste. Food is amazing and drinks included in the price.

The (french) managers are very kind and always helpful. The guides (ours was Amos) are very gentle and know everything about animals and birds.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Located on an isthmus between the western shore of Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloidien in the Great Rift Valley, and a stone's throw from Hell's Gate, Hippo Point is the stunning brainchild of Michael and Dodo Cunningham-Reid, a totally unique retreat in Kenya, one of the most unusual - and romantic - places to go wildlife-watching.Exclusivity, accommodation and setting all distinguish Hippo Point as spectacular. The combination of the amazing accommodation, service and the natural beauty of Hippo Point generates a sense of privilege about being able to stay here. The feeling is of wild simplicity and unspoiled elegance. Hosts are the Cunningham-Reid family, who have been in Kenya since 1948.Coming to Hippo Point is all about slow-safari and letting go in what we best describe as a hybrid of private wildlife sanctuary and a wild wellness health retreat.Once carried by the sounds of over 500 species of birds and 1,100 animals roaming the grounds you will hopefully let go of your busy life and go with the flow as nature intended. You can choose from any of the luxurious rooms between Hippo Point Manor and Dodos Tower both safe and luxurious spaces for your mind, body & spirit. Here we want you to let go and have fun; catch up with yourself, enjoy family & friends and reboot in nature. Fall asleep under Russian linen sheets, smothered by the stars of Africa, soothed by the sounds of hyena and hippo calling in the night. Wake up early and breath in the cool spring air of altitude (6,200 feet), walk among the game and birdlife along the lake shore, do yoga at sunrise, swim, jog with the zebra, bike, meditate, read or simply enjoy breakfast in bed.Start your day with fresh organic juice and homemade muesli or a horse ride followed by fresh farm eggs here, you can do what you like when you like and if you are more than 6 you get the whole place for yourselves.During the mid morning when the high altitude sun warms you still have a whole day ahead of you you can be active or lazy, you can enjoy delightful treatments in our lakeside gazebo or in the open air with zebra, giraffe and colobus monkeys looking out with envy. You can read and write in the top of the Tower or ski on the lake with hippos judging your style all good build up to a delicious poolside lunch of fresh organic greens, juices and the occasional homemade ginger ice cream if you are lucky! ... more   less
