When my taxi drove into the premises, my heart sank. On entering the lobby, you could tell that this probably used to be "the place" in Kano. Entering the room was the real shocker - a dirtier hotel I have never seen in living memory. I patiently waited for them to re-clean it but still couldn't stay so I opted for a more expensive room which was still distasteful.
The service was particularly rotten. Maintenance came to fix the lights in my room and dimantled the fittings of the lampholder, left to collect a replacement part, and never showed up till I checked out - despite my entreaties.
I went to the restaurant (or coffee room as they called it) to have supper. The stench of the adjoining toilet forced me to reconsider eating there - I decided to stick my head in the sand and have my meal in my room, knowing the likely source of the delicacies. The food was tasty and I came out unscathed.
Although I travelled alone I was not too lonely, thanks to the rats and the mosquitoes. My plea for measures to be taken were acknowledged but no action was taken. I felt very unwelcome.
I checked out the following morning (no, I won't talk about the state of the bathroom) and moved to another hotel, which after this experience was pure heaven. And believe it or not, my newfound lodging was cheaper!More
