we used this accomm because it was nice and close to the public bus stop but left here after 1 night because we didn't feel that we were getting value nor enjoying our stay. Moving was the best thing we ever did as we found the most amazing hotel i have ever stayed in for exactly the same price. (i'm not going to advertise another hotel on here)

it is a perfectly ok hotel but don't expect much. The service was mediocre at best, the rooms were VERY basic, showers were hot, cold, hot, cold depending on what all the other rooms were doing

Price is very good ($35 for a simple single), rooms are clean, showers are hot, and location is good. What more can one ask for at this price? If you desire a pool and beach view, why not walk down the beach 2km to the Serena and enjoy those for the day at a fraction of their room rate? Ubumwe is highly recommended!

It is hard to find a hotel that gives you value for your money in Rwanda. It is not a very touristy country (except for the gorillas) but there are quite a few hotels charging quite high rates (it is said to be due to the many NGOs present in Rwanda).

Hotel Ubumwe gave us a double room for $50US per night if we stayed for 3 nights; which included breakfast for two people. The positives included:
* Best value hotel in Gisenyi that we saw
* Delicious decent sized breakfast (tea or coffee with milk & sugar on the side; choice of egg including very good omelettes; toast with jam & margarine; mixed fruit plate...)
* Most rooms have some sort of view onto the lake, and you can always go and sit up in the restaurant to look out and have a drink
* There is wifi (we could only get it from the restaurant though)
* DSTV is provided - but they only have one TV hooked up (in the restaurant) so if you want to watch something in particular, you have to ask for that channel! (they are very happy to accommodate though and will ask you for your preferences)
* There is a great shower and comfortable beds with mosquito nets
* The service is fantastic - Eric was so welcoming and attentive, called up Kampala Coach for us and arranged for the hotel manager to drop us at the bus station on the morning of our departure

Small things to note
* You are about 200m from the DRC border - obviously keep an eye on the news and the security situation - if things become unstable, particularly close to Goma, I would not travel to Gisenyi at all
* The streets of Gisenyi didn't feel that safe. There were not many tourists at all around and we went to the Serena Hotel to use their private beach, as that felt a lot safer...
* The food at the Ubumwe restaurant is pretty good but for an amazing meal & experience go to the Stipp Hotel (very close by) and order the meal of the day. So good!
* There is no pool or private beach. However you couldn't expect those for the price!

All the best to the staff at Ubumwe, they deserve to have success!

Was fine, very comparable to most church guest houses in the area. Rooms are clean, service was quite good and it is in easy walking distance of other resturants, etc.
It is just a few hundred meters from the DRC boarder and two blocks from the lake.

this is a delightful, small hotel with very helpful staff who will attend to your every need. The room was spotless with comfortable bed, and the breakfast was quite good. Good value for the price. An additional pleasure was the little African Grey bird that the staff were training to talk.
