“Reasonable hotel in Ruhengeri”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

I stayed in Ruhengeri for 2 nights; from Ruhengeri the lakes of the vulcano park and gorillas can easily be visited.
The staff of the Hotel is very friendly.
The rooms are very basic. There is hot water in the Hotel; every room has a boiler. The wifi was working reasonably well, especially in the common area (lobby, restaurant). Don't expect a 4 star Hotel. This is a basic Hotel, very clean.

The hotel lacks character. it is a large impersonal property that seems more like a business hotel with no soul. Our rooms were clean but our hot water lasted about two minutes. On our second night we were treated to pounding bad music that was blasting in the back garden - thankfully it stopped at 9:30 pm.

The restaurant is to be avoided - food was abysmal and service excruciatingly slow. Average wait time was over an hour, whether or not we were the only clients. After two terrible meals, we opted to head down the road to Volcana Lounge for our last dinner in Ruhengeri for fantastic pizza.

In a nutshell - tolerable for a clean bed but avoid the restaurant.

Save money and stay here instead at the very expensive lodges near the park. Rooms are clean, food is not bad at all (had a fantastic fish filet). The staff is friendly and helpful. Location is about 20' drive away from the Park headquarters. Hotel is near the main road so rooms can be a bit noisy but traffic is rather light at night. Very nice garden where you can sit for meals. Would definitely go back.

The hotel again shone through the friendliness of their staff and their willingness to assist.
With no kettle in the room to make tea during those chilly nights - I work at night to file my travel stories - the hotel was swift to provide a large thermos of hot water, tea bags and a pot of milk, and that arrangement worked well and came with the compliments of the management.
The rooms are simply but adequately furnished and the hot water in the bathroom comes from a direct boiler, great to be sure that there is hot water when needed.
The dining room atmosphere is 'communal' in a friendly way, with guests having the chance to share a table with other fellow travellers and hear their tales.
Most guests had come for the annual naming of the gorilla babies, locally known as Kwita Izina, but the manager did say he had generally a good mix of local people travelling upcountry or traders going to or from Congo, and tourists coming for gorilla tracking, to explore the area including the caves, the twin lakes and the former coronation site of the old kingdom.
Good value for money, and while I give if that coveted 4th = very good rating, in truth it is about how I was treated and looked after, while reality might demand a 3.5 or slightly less, considering there are no other facilities.

Room Tip: Do ask for a room away from the main road as traffic noise at night can be quite disturbing and the...

This hotel is a decent 3-star option conveniently located just a short drive from Volcanoes NP headquarters where I did a gorilla trek which is an amazing experience. The rooms were okay, nothing exceptional, although free wi-fi internet was a pleasant surprise. Our room had a bad sewer gas odor upon arrival, but the helpful attendant promptly fixed the floor drain trap to eliminate the odor, otherwise this review would be different. The food was also just okay, but everyone should be able to find something to eat.

I stayed at La Palm as an alternative to the more expensive hotels at the Volcanos Park where I did a gorilla trek and golden monkey trek as part of my tour with Bizidanny Tours. The staff at this hotel were extremely friendly and accommodating and the food was very good. They even made me a special Authentic African meal that was vegetarian and delicious. My room was very clean and comfortable and quite modern. I felt more like I was in a nice hotel in the US rather than in Africa. It was a great place to relax and recuperate after trekking and was located only a short drive from the park. I actually enjoyed the drive and seeing all the young school children on their way to school. This is a very great alternative to the much more expensive lodges in the park. I was very pleased and surprised at having such nice accommodations.

Room Tip: I had a suite with a balcony overlooking the back area which was very quiet and relaxing.
