“A decent stay in the mountains”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We stayed at the Home Inn for 3 nights last month while we were in Rwanda. It was well located to the Volcanoes National Park and overall provided us with a decent base for our gorilla trekking. The rooms were large and well maintained and although our balcony door did not lock we were on the 1st floor so we didn't freak out about it.

The staff were incredibly helpful, especially Jean-Claude and Henry and nothing appeared too much trouble for them. The wi-fi was a bit hit and miss for the first few days but we just accepted it due to where we were but they soon fixed it and it worked well enough. They also cleaned our manky boots after every trip to the jungle and never charged us once which was very good of them.

My only complaint would be how long it took to prepare the food in the evening in particular. We waited over an hour for a cheese and ham toastie, in fact we waited over an hour for all our evening meals, one occasion nearly 2 hours! When it came the food was nice enough but it was a long wait for what we asked for. It's a shame because otherwise the service was fantastic. Other than that we couldn't fault the place.

Overall the Home Inn is a fine hotel. The room was comfortable. The staff had some issues with getting the lights working, but it was sorted out. They cleaned shoes for free after a day of gorilla trekking and did a good job. Stayed on full-board and basically you could order anything on the menu and it would be covered. Had good meals, but they did take a very long time. First night I think we waited around 2 hours for food to arrive, second night was faster, but definitely more than an hour after ordering. Staff was friendly and location felt safe.

Nice hotel, comfortable rooms, clean and quiet; nice friendly staff & priced about right. Convenient launch point to Kinigi to see the gorillas etc.

Only drawback was the pub - it took about an hour to get a pizza in the evening, and the draft beer was flat.

Room Tip: We had the room right behind the pub and it was quiet even with our bathroom window open. However, l...

This is my 6th four-week long stay at the Home Inn, staying with different colleagues throughout, whilst training senior police officers in the nearby National Police College. The rooms are large, and kept spotlessly clean by Nicole and Damascene. Some of the beds are hard but if its a problem, just ask and they will put you in another room or change the mattress. The waiters, Jean Paul, Bridget, and Fred, are efficient and interested in us as guests, able to communicate in Kinyarwanda, French, English, Swahili and Dutch, and I suspect in other languages as well if needed. They are attentive, but not over the top, extremely polite and friendly. Gilbert has just joined them as catering supervisor and introduced some new ideas like a buffet breakfast table, which looks and tastes good. Jean Claude, Freda and Fred run reception and will arrange taxis, taxi motor bikes or will give any information that you might need. The owner, Raymond, is a businessman rather than hotelier, so is always welcomes suggestions and feedback from his guests to make their stay (and his business), better. It is a quiet, welcoming hotel so don't expect a gym, disco or swimming pool. Mosquito nets over all of the beds - which I use, but I haven't seen many - thus far. The surrounding area is safe to walk around and the town is a pleasant 15-20 minute stroll - or you could hop on a motor bike taxi. There are a few very good places to eat freshly made, basic, safe food in town and it is wonderful to sit and watch the people going about their business in this extremely hard working community. It makes you realise how easy we have life! The temperature here, due to its altitude is about 4' less than Kigali, so bring a light fleece for some of the evenings. I have checked out the opposition in the area but will certainly return here next year.

Room Tip: Room 212 is advertised as a suite. It is actually an en suite bedroom with an additional room with a...

Excellent stay and our visit to the dining room was a awesome experience as well. Our server Jean Claude was excellent. It is very close to the main street if you want to get out and explore on your own. The rooms are big but the beds are some what stiff.

I went to Home Inn with a team of Research Assistants for 2 nights and I loved the service. The booking on the phone was smooth and the rooms were first class - to my satisfaction. The staff at reception were very understanding and accommodating.

The food was amazing and overall, my comment is that its a great place to go to. I recomment.

We loved our stay here. Great great food (from french style to local roast chicken). Excellent staff and helped arrange early morning breakfast, last minute clothes washing and advice. Lovely big rooms, comfy beds. Essential when gorilla trekking.

Room Tip: We stayed downstairs well away from upstairs bar, which could have been a bit noisy.
