“Spectacular view with amazing service”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

The staff at this lodge are all wonderful. they are competent and very friendly. The cottages were comfortable and large. The food was delicious and extremely well prepared and presented. Finally, the view is just outstanding. From any direction you see volcanoes and lakes. Just an overall outstanding experience.

A volcano for a view is not a usual site. A view with 5 volcanoes, 2 lakes, a village and a national park with Mountain gorillas living in it, is a gift from nature. A 360 degrees lodge on the top of the mountain, with stunning sunsets on one side and stunning sunrises on the other, Virunga Lodge has probably the best view of them all. Top it all with seamless service, amazing drinks at any time, delicious food, served by genuinely happy people, in a homy and charming set up, Virunga Lodge is the perfect place to travel around, hike and walk, in this booming part of Rwanda. The lodge has an easy access, the bumps can only strengthen one's abdominals! And the 5 hours walk to the Gorilla does the same to your legs. A perfect reason to get this complimentary massage by the crew at the lodge. Innocent and Jean d'amour where particularly interesting and ambitious talented people. Our guide Moises was an absolute rely on, funny, willing, generous, patient and powerful man. And so does every person on the grounds. Dinners, breakfast and lunches where all taken at the same table, sharing the day experiences, and every discussion you can have with a glass of wine, eating with a person you just met. And left. "Do yourself a favor and put this on your bucket list" as one traveller said. Thank you for each one at Virunga Lodge to make us feel the way we did.

Room Tip: All bandas have either a sunset view or a sunrise view. The one we chose was a sunset view and it wa...

The view, the staff.....what else can you say?
The bungalows are spacious and well equipped. The views over the lake and of the vocanoes are worth the trip. Watching the sun rise and set can almost make you forget that you came to see the gorillas.

Everything with this Lodge is perfect. From the location at the top of the hill, to the spectacular view in all directions.
Like also the dinner arrangement with all the guests together at the long table having the opportunity to share all experiences.

Even though this place is about 3/4 of an hour away from the meeting point for the gorilla trekking, it is well worth the travel to stay there. The view, the service and the food is great, and it even makes it sweeter that all drinks are included. We specially loved that all the guest was gathered around one table for dinner. It made the experience even better.

We spent 3 nights at Virunga Lodge in July 2014. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
Very private
Gorgeous views
Cottages have nice bathrooms, comfortable beds
Service was over the top!!
Lots of free options at the hotel: free massage, hikes to the village, hikes to the lake
Great place to do gorilla trekking

Cons:
Food is average
Have to wake at 5am for gorilla trekking (45 min drive)

We really enjoyed our school visit and asked our guide how we could give back to one of the students that impressed us. Our guide suggested gifting her a bicycle. For less than $100, we presented her a bicycle and it was a wonderful experience. This will help her family with carrying water and they can earn some money using the bicycle as a taxi. I highly recommend others finding ways to encourage the better students at this village school to continue their studies. See my attached pictures.
