After several years of driving through Graaff-Reinet on the way to Johannesburg and threatening to stay for a night, we finally booked 2 nights at The Drostdy. We are so glad we did. One day is not enough to unwind and explore this lovely town, beautiful nearby locations such as the Valley of Desolation and the great restaurants in the town. The Drostdy is so pretty, with whitewashed buildings and colourful shutters - the Africology Spa was just great and the products made for perfect gifts (for ourselves and others!). Everything was impeccable - service, food and cleanliness. Take some time out and relax in this Karoo gem.

Gone are the days of a 'boring' small town!

2 nights indeed is a great way to treat yourself to the beauty Graaff-Reinet has to offer.

We do look forward to hosting you again - to treat you to the luxury and spleandour we have...

We again stayed at the Drostdy for two nights in May 2018 and found the hotel with all facilities as good as in the past. Tranquil, beautifully decorated and maintained. The accommodation is top notch with all possible comforts, large underfloor heated bathrooms, etc. All the staff, including the manager Mr. Janus Schoeman who paid such personal attention to us a guests, so very friendly and efficient. We dined in the hotel restaurant on both evenings and again found the service, food and wine excellent. The bar is worth a visit. There is a wine tasting room and large conference room for those requiring such facilities. The breakfasts are a treat - with excellent eggs benedict - inter alia. This hotel is a haven of beauty and quiet in the Great Karoo. The gardens are a delight and the outdoor relaxing areas superb. The main building is historic, superbly furnished and decorated with many items of historic interest. The lounges and library-cigar lounge is a must see and just the place to relax with a book. We will return as soon as possible.

Room Tip: All rooms quiet - Any will do.

The rooms are absolutely gorgeous nd well kept, the staff is helpful and very on top of things. The food is tasty and they have vast selection of wines!
Food is quite pricey, I wouldn’t say that it 100% worth it but desert was delicious and made up for it.

I used to love the Drostdy Hotel in the 1980's; in those far-off days it was a really special place, with a tangible feeling that an individual loved it enormously, and furnished it with his/her unique collectables. The dining room was lit with real candles in an ancient candelabra and the staff were competent, confident and yet relaxed . Every bedroom was done out differently, and the public spaces also housed some fabulous unique furniture. The garden looked loved as well. I went there for coffee as we were passing through last week, and was quietly horrified at the 'generic' way it has been decorated (I presume by some interior decorator, probably a very famous one). It didn't do it for me, although certain items of furniture admittedly look good, but the place has lost its subtlety and all of its charm. It has been overdone. The dining room was filled with horrid reproduction chairs, and ordinary prints on the walls, and peeping inside the bedrooms they also had this mass-produced feeling. The service was not good, it took half an hour to produce our coffee, and then the scones only arrived half an hour after we'd drunk it. So sorry that this beautiful place has been compromised to cater for the 'proletariat'.

Dear Vita

Thank you for your comments - we'll be sure to pass them onto the "decorator", and look into your service experience.

The "ordinary prints on the wall" dates back to 1937 and is the original Roberts' plates painted by Norman Lighton - Truly a priceless edition that we are all very proud off.
