“A place to remember”
Reviewed 20 March 2014

It was 2 years ago when I stayed at the lodge for 2 nights. The lodge and rooms had beautiful rustic touch to it. You'd definitely know you're in Africa. The first day we went quad biking to explore the area. We had an amazing time, which felt so different from riding the jeeps into game reserves. Freedom** Dinner was great, a feeling I'd always remember... Dinner on a patio facing the game reserve, watching the sunset, sipping on a cocktail, a cozy campfire, with wonderful music.

I'd like to thank you for the unforgettable moments Nyaru has given me.
Do give this place a try, perhaps you'll find your unforgettable moments there.

Dear Ruan,
I was part of the bis group visting you 8. to 10. Febr. 2014. It was beautiful or as Josphat would say fantastic. Your team at the Lodge with Hazel and her Girls in the Kitchen and your guides Josphat and Christian are just great, I was so wonderful to get to known you. We had so much fun on our safari and the nature tour where we learned a lot, how to live and survive in the bush. The breakfast was great with a lot of good things to eat, fresh fruit, freah baked cookies.
For me it was the first time to eat ostrich and crocodile, but it was delicious. Thanks a lot to Hazel and her team. She is also a very good baker, her chocolade cake was fantastic, and I can really say that, since I like to bake very much too. It felt like being with all of you in a big family. The little houses where we stayed are lovely and they have everything that needed. I pool is smal but great for a quick jump in by coming back from an amazing safari tour with Christian or Josphat. It is so beautiful to be in the nature, to hear and see the animals around.
Also your animals in the house Madam schischi and tschitschi (sorry don't know how you spell them) and Lucky (?) makes it even more as feeling home and most welcome.
Ruan and Elmarie thank you so much, everything was great and well organized. And you took really good care of us. You have a great fantatic team with Hazel and her girls and Josphat and Christian as Guides. They know so much about the animals, the nature that is amazing.
We laughed a lot and learnd so much from you.
And Brenda how she is handling the spiders it's just wow ... I wish I could take them in the hand too, I think it will take away the fear.
Your logde itself is not big but I think that makes is speciell. The little bedroom houses are nice and friendly and have everything whats needed, and they fit beauftiful into the nature around.
Climping up the little hill and having picnic and watching the sun going down, fantastic.
Is is quiet and not fas away from Mosel Bay.
The safari by Jeep is great but also the safari tour with the Quad bikes is a lot of fun.
I was fantastic how closed we cold come to the animals. We did so many beauftiful pictures.
Thank you so much to all of you for having such a great time, Ruan, Elmarie, Christian, Josphat, Brenda, Hazel and your Girls.
Locking forward to see you all once again!

Room Tip: we stayed in House 4; all the little houses are great it is up th how many beds are needed; all of t...

Thank you to Ruan, who fulfilled all my wishes, requirements. Thanks for your patience and most of all the prompt reply to my hundreds of emails! Much appreciated. We spent two memorable nights at the Nyaru Lodge. A warm welcome by Elmarie and welcome drinks awaited our group when we arrived after a long journey from Cape Town. The Chalets surely gave one the bush feel, yet all amenities of a 5 star hotel. Good size bathrooms and bedrooms, soft linen bedding, cuddly blankets, Lenor soft towels!!All furnishings in warm earthy colours. Idyllic African surroundings with the noise from the jungle that no symphony orchestra could replace or copy. Ruan's staff were really a great bunch of people and everybody in our group enjoyed themselves.
I must note the exceptional services received from the following staff members:

Christian: - OUR WIKI -ANTHROPOLOGIST!!!!!!! HE EATS, DREAMS, SLEEPS HIS JOB. HIS GOT FIRE AND ENTHUSIASM AND SEES HIS JOB AS HIS CALLING -
Josphat: OUR VERY OWN BUSHMAN WITH KNOWLEDGE OF EVERY PLANT AND ITS MEDICINAL USES. WE HAD PLENTY OF LAUGHS WITH HIM AND GAINED AN INSIGHT INTO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES TRADITION AND BELIEFS
CHEF Hazel: BIG MAMA HERSELF. ADORABLE AND AMAZING TALENT WITH A VERY BIG HEART TOGETHER WITH THOSE EVER SMILING EYES, MAKES HER THE KIND OF CHEF WHO ENTICES ONE TO ENJOY SOUL-FOOD - STRAIGHT FROM HER HEART!! Ostrich Neck Stew....DELICIOUS.
Kitchen girls, NELLIE, CHANIEL, PAULINA, MARIE AND LEELYNN - They all deserve THEIR PRAISES TO BE SUNG. THE KITCHEN LADIES WERE ALL SMILES, EARLY MORNINGS, LATE AT NIGHT. THEY HAVE PROBABLY NEVER ENCOUNTERED SUCH A MAD BUNCH OF GUESTS, AND THEIR EFFORTS IN SERVING THIS CRAZY GROUP, WERE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.

We just about ate everything that came from the bush! PLEASE NOTE: from sustainable resources and trusted suppliers (I've checked that out, so animal lovers don't cause a riot at what is served at dinner time).

Ruan, you have a great team and we could feel it was one big family taking care of another big, crazy family. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR MAKING MY SON'S 30TH BIRTHDAY A MEMORABLE ONE! You kept your promise!!!

Keep up the good work!!! Elemarie, a woman with zest for life and what a power woman running this whole operation. Incredible as it is admirable.

Greetings to all the wonderful Staff members. See you next year!!!

And.... Yep, Nyaru is ABSOLUTELY GAY FRIENDLY.

Room Tip: Chalet nr. 4. and the entire Nighjar accommodation, especially for a large group.

What a super little lodge with enormous hospitality and beautiful decor. We felt miles away from home even when we were only 30kms away. Unfortunately we could only stay for one night but that was enough to realize that there are still people in the world of today`s times that is genuine. Ruan answers each email promptly and so respectfully and patiently, and Elmarie and Chris goes beyond the extra mile to make you feel at home and comfortable. You will find the spirit of the great heart there ! Thank you to the people of Nyaru that made it so special so naturally !

Spent three wonderful days here on our second visit. Accommodation very comfortable. Idyllic surroundings. Food well presented and tasty. Lovely furnishings in the bar and Restaurant. The boma on the terrace adds to the African atmosphere, but what really makes it special are the lovely Ruan and his Mum Elmarie plus of course Madam Gigi, the Griffin dog. Valentine Day dinner was made very special here. Loved every minute and felt very tearful to leave. Will be back as soon as possible.

Room Tip: All the chalets are lovely but book early for a family chalet as there is only one.

We’ve spent a wonderful week in Nyaru in December. Times ran quickly ever since, but we never forget our stay there. The gorgeous surrounding, the wild life, the fireplace, the cosy bed, the stylishness and cleanness of the place, the mouthwatering food were more than expected. But what mad us truly fall in love with this place is that Elmarie, Chris and Ruan made us feel at home every minute of our stay. And we’ve lost our heart to Fabian, a huge, male white rhino, and were happy to see him every afternoon. The story of his friendship with Gigi, the little black pug dog, is so unique – you have to see it for yourself. Christian showed us the beauty of birds and plants and so much more. And the quad bike safari with Josphat was pure bliss, after losing the sensation of riding a mad cow. Next time I’ll do the Cheetah dip for sure ;-)… Dear Nyaru Game Lodge family, we’ve left a piece of our heart in your place, and we hope to come back sometimes to feel complete again.

Stayed two nights with my family in Nyaru Game lodge and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Had initial correspondence with Ruan who was very prompt in answering all my queries. However when we visited the lodge, Ruan was away but his mother El Mary (hope I got that name right) was there and she couldn’t have been more nicer. We booked a two bed room family chalet but after seeing my mother in law would have difficulties in climbing up and down the stairs, El Mary offered her another vacant single room chalet free of charge which was a very nice gesture.

The rooms and the lodge including the pool were maintained very well and the whole place had a nice soothing/relaxing atmosphere. We did one game drive on 4 X 4 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highlight was taking a bend and encountering the Rhino (Fabian).

We also had dinner one night in the Game lodge and it was definitely one of the best meals we have had in our 11 day trip in South Africa. So if you are staying in the lodge, I would definitely urge you to try out their dinner at least for one night.

All in all it was a memorable two-night stay and it is a place where we wish we had spent more days. If you are travelling along the garden route (whether as a couple or with family) and looking for a game lodge to stay, look no further than Nyaru Game lodge.
