“interesting to say the least”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

coming from Singapore where restaurants have to be pristine and go bust in 18 months or so, we arrived to find a shack. "D'oh!" we thought.
But then again the meal only cost SGD$15/person or so, and we were free to bring our own wine at no corkage... so we braved on.
The entire meal was communicated in Afrikaans, so we pretty much were clueless what the next dishes were. A quick search on the website helped as the menu was listed in English.
Our kind hostess had given us a quick briefing in English to help us though.
A wedding was going on next to us, and it was really fun to observe what goes on in a South African wedding, as obviously I've never witnessed one. The music left more to be desired, although I thought it was the playlist of choice of the wedded couple's.
The food tasted interesting, a variety of cape malay curries, stews, salads, grilled seafood etc etc etc. We zonked out in a food coma by dish #8, all thanks to the boyfriend who grabbed a huge chunk of the BEST tasting potbread I've ever EVER had. I couldnt stop raving about its texture, fragrance and buttery softness.. and the butter we had along with it was divine.
When we had to leave early at dish #10 because we were falling over from food coma and had to drive in pitch black darkness, the hostess insisted we were missing out and hurriedly grabbed us a portion of their dessert koeksisters (unsure of spelling), as we had never had it before (even though the boyfriend had been to south africa at least 20 times),
it was BLOODY GOOD.
I dont really understand why the previous reviews of this place were so bad. Well I did nearly fall over from the lopside bench seats, and had to pretty much eat with my hands(which is fun, mind you) but go with the expectation of having a casual, simple, fun and hearty beach-side meal, and you won't be disappointed.

“A little bit disappointing”
Reviewed 9 February 2014 via mobile

We went there last night with friends from overseas to give them a little African feeling but thought in a good way however it was a bit disappointing beeping here 3 time as in the lady 4-5 years I feel it's gombe be weaker and weaker - unfortunately

The place is actually gourgious and u could make a colder cow out of but there is no personal effort to see

The tables are dirty the staffs cloths too there is a mixture of benches and plastic chairs nothing to do with beach feeling at all no one candle or light at the table nothing " nice" and finally u get to eat from paper plates .... A no go!

There was a wedding going on next and I don't know if in such case the couple wouldn't be more happy to had more privacy so means I would not celebrate wedding together with running daily business as same place without giving them at least more privacy or close for the wedding all public guest
This was also a clear breach in parts because the wedding tables where set nicely by the couple itself. So it looked that all other guests paying 210 ZAR pp are second class visitors

The food was not as good as I remember from the past it was like mass food however the bread was fresh and excellent ( unfortunately can just say this about the bread)

I remember years ago some crab was offered at the end so even if everybody was full you had the choice and a bit of a feeling u got what u paid - this feeling is gone now

Finally something good happend when we where talking to other guests the manager came and asked about our opinion - which we have and it looked the lady was quote surprised about
I offered her to contact me for a resume and support if she needs - because I'm running a venue too

Maybe this is why I'm looking with other eyes but the comment here from other people are showing me I'm not so much far away from their feelings, expectations and experiences

I hope that the owner which sits in stellenbosch (!) can take focus on such recommendations and comments otherwise he will have a black cow which is bringing him to red numbers instead of a Golden one

If u need assistance for improvement pls contact me ....

“sad supper”
Reviewed 8 February 2014

We were looking forward to fresh sea food served on the beach. Sad to say that the food did not seem to be prepared with fresh ingredients or any great seasoning. The music drowns out the sound of the ocean and we left without our welcome drink ever arriving. On complaining we were informed that it is the same menu for the last 10 years. Maybe the chef was off duty. Would not recomend or return.

“Poor communication”
Reviewed 28 January 2014

I can't tell you what the food is like here, which makes this a bit pointless as a restaurant review. However, I'm posting this as advice, should you be thinking of eating here.

The concept sounds good, and presumably they are popular, but having tried to eat here a few times, I would advise that you confirm your booking, re-confirm, and then maybe make sure that you have a back-up plan as well. Coming from Cape Town, we have hoped to stop on our way past, but hadn't been able to find a time that they were open. Fortunately on this trip they were open, and I made a booking for Sunday, at 1pm, via their sms system. What we weren't told, is that you have to be there at 12, so when we arrived we were informed that we were too late, as the meals are served a course at a time, so we couldn't "catch-up". As we were going to be heading back to Cape Town the next Sunday, we made a booking while we were there, and confirmed the 12pm start.
When we arrived, promptly at 12, the place looked very quiet. We eventually found some staff in the kitchen area, who told us that they were closed, as there weren't sufficient bookings. At this point another 2 couples and a family had also arrived, and we queried why we hadn't been notified. Apparently the manager had just left to go home to call everybody! They also told us that there had been 6 people prior to our arrival, who also hadn't been told about the cancellation, so I'm not sure how many people they need to open, or when they make the decision to pull the plug.
