“Great Value, nice stop in Mossel Bay”
Reviewed 28 November 2009

We had a one night stop in Mossel Bay as we headed along the coast. We had not booked in advance and the tourist info office recommended The Edward Charles, which was also in our Rough Guide. First of all for the night cost 300rand, about £28 for the room and breakfast and following our stay I can say this was excellent value.

The room was fine, there was only a shower in the bathroom but it was all clean and comfy. The guest house is quite big and had a couple of nice common areas and books to read. The lady on reception recommended somewhere for dinner - the Kingfisher, at the point, and arranged pick-up by the restuarant, which was very good and good value.

The breakfast in the morning was nothing special but put some food in us and we then got in our way. I'm not sure if there was much to see in Mossel Bay but we had to get on to our next stop but our brief stay in Mossel Bay and the Edward Charles was a surprising success as a quick stopover.

We were pleasantly surprised at our very spacious room with a stunning view over the harbour and the HUGE bathroom. Unfortunately the jacuzzi pool was not operational - one of the reasons we had chosen this hotel. The hotel is a bit strangely configured with rooms and passages seemingly at random but we thoroughly enjoyed our one night there.

We stayed two nights in this small hotel - my husband, myself and adult daughter. It was fine, the room was large and beds were very comfortable. We had an amazing view.

Staff were friendly and helpful and overall our stay was good value for money. We did not use the swimming pool - it's more of a plunge pool and it was in the shade when we wanted to use it. Breakfast was good but there were not many people staying at the time and so there was not much atmosphere.

Mossel Bay is not a place you would want to stay for too many nights, just as one of the guide books says really, a pleasant stopping off place along the Garden Route. We had the most amazing meal at Jazzbury's - probably the best meal we had during our stay in South Africa.

Maybe some of the upstairs rooms are not suitable for elderly or disabled - we had to access our room via a spiral staircase although there was alternative access as well. In some ways this added charater to the place although it might be difficult for some lesser able bodied folk!

  • Liked — Good Value. Fantastic view from our room.
  • Disliked — Very quiet while we were there. Pool a bit disappointing - sorry!

My wife & I stayed for two nights in early Jan 2008. The first thing we would say is that the advertising for this "Hotel" is dubious. In our view this is not an Hotel it's a large B&B. The advertising stated something like "enjoy spectacular views of the beaches, harbour & the mountains". Not from either of the two rooms we had you couldn't. Roof lines & aerials were the order of the day. The first thing we noticed (other than the hotel being on a steep hillside & having limited parking) upon checking in was that this Hotel appeared to be unsuitable for the elderly or infirm (steep stairs up to rooms or downstairs to reception and rooms). We initially were given an upstairs room. Good view you would imagine. Wrong! After complaining, we were initially told no other rooms were available, however shortly after being told this the Manager offered us a different room, this one being downstairs (poorer view you would think). Wrong again! It was marginally better. We accepted the second room though it was not as large or as well decorated as the first room. We suggested to the Manager that the advertising was "economical" & that the website should state that some rooms have a "restricted view" & of the possible problems which the elderly or infirm may suffer from & advise potential customers accordingly upon booking either on-line or by telephone. The manager seemed to accept this & offered us a small reduction on our room rate. We accepted this offer. On the positive side the room (s) were clean & bright, the staff were friendly & the breakfast (included in the room rate) was quite good. One other problem (which is one of safety, particularly if you were infirm or had children in the room) was that the kettle had to be placed on the floor underneath the dressing table to enable it to be plugged in. This was due to the length of the kettle cord & this was the only socket we could find. Would we stay there again or recommend this "Hotel?" Sadly, no.

  • Liked — Cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Innacurate description of property. Very small swimming pool.
