Stayed here for ten nights Jan 2007. We were met at Dar es Salaam airport and escorted to the domestic airport for our 40 min flight in a 6 seater aircraft to Mafia Island. After landing we were driven along very bumpy roads for 30 mins to the lodge. On arrival we received a very warm welcome and then shown our room. We stayed in a garden room close to the bar/restaurant. Despite its location it was private and had everything we needed. The room was large with an adequate bathroom. Electricity was available 24 hours and the solar heated water was piping hot. The room was very clean and had a wonderful balcony compete with hammock. From our balcony we could see the sea and swimming pool. The pool was always quiet as most of the guests go diving for most of the day. Often I was the only one sunbathing. The beach was also very quiet with plenty of beach beds and shade. The sea was warm and clean, however, as with the Zanzibar East Coast beaches the tide does go out a long way. So the importance of a swimming pool on Mafia is something to seriously consider.
The hotel provides Full Board and the food was good. The breakfast was a buffet for cold items and the cooked food was made to order. Lunch was usually soup followed by a salad buffet and pasta, again cooked to order and a dessert. Dinner was a set meal or on other evenings another buffet. This was our only niggle - too many buffets, as when we were served dinner the food was excellent. The bar was furnished with plenty of large cushions and the prices were reasonable. A bottle of South African wine started at $20 up to about $32.
My husband went diving and thoroughly enjoyed himself. The instructor, a South African, called Audi Murphy was very competent and the groups were small. I also had the chance to snorkel with whale sharks - which was fantastic. There is also a new spa with a professional Thai masseuse who gave an excellent massage.
I must save my highest praise for the staff. Without exception they were all friendly, efficient and hard working. They made the whole holiday perfect. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel for complete relaxation, excellent diving, early nights and the chance to experience Mafia Island which must be like Zanzibar was 50 years ago.
A real get away from it place where you need not deny yourself any comfort.
