“Wonderfully relaxing”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

I spent a very enjoyable weekend here at the end of August. Fantastic view of Mt Kili slopes and surrounding area, although the peak was often covered in cloud. The rooms were functional, not warm (bring warm clothes in winter!), but not damp (even though we were in the clouds each early morning). The staff were very helpful and friendly. I especially enjoyed hiking with them to the nearby Mnambe waterfall, and in the rainforest above the lodge.

We stayed end of July, and agree with the previous review. The rooms were very cold and damp, the sheets were damp, and clothes left in the room became damp, and at 90$ a room you definately expect more comfort than what's on offer, which is very basic. I've stayed in lots of places in TZ and east Africa at far lower rates but so much better. This was intended as a bit of treat after a camping safari and before a walking trip.. but it didn't turn out a treat. They either need to significantly lower the price, so expectations of what is offered are lowered, or do a lot of work to bring it up to the 90$ a room mark. Again as the previous reviewer said, the positive things were the staff who were very friendly, and tried their best.

We've stayed there during August. Maybe this month is the wrong time to go there and if we've stayed there another time of the year,we could have enjoyed our stay there more. When we arrived there it was very very cold and wet, even the sheets and toilet paper in our rooms have been moist. The room is very very basic and it was so cold and moist there, that it was hard to sleep. The room is also very small,it only allows space for one bed, which is so small, that my boyfriend couldn't stretch his legs. The whole room felt dirty and very uncomfortable. During the day there was no electricity,so we had to use the bathroom in the dark. The view from the lodge and the nature around is very beautiful, but we couldn't enjoy it because it was cloudy all the time. There is nowhere, where you can just sit around, read a book and relax, because everywhere, also in the restaurant area,it's cold, uncomfortable and dirty. As we were the only guests and sometimes even couldn't find any members of staff, we really felt lost the whole afternoon. At first, we planned to stay for 3 nights but then we stayed only for 1 night, glad to leave the next morning. The positive things i can say, is that the staff was relatively friendly, the food was surprisingly good and the owner was willing to give us a discount after our complaint!

Very basic and spartan rooms, but they were clean. The views of Kilimanjaro are astounding. The staff was very enthusiastic. We were only staying one night, but I wish we had stayed longer and taken advantage of the hotel's offerings for local tours and activities.

The lodge is located on the top of a hill above the Chagga village tribe. As soon as you open the door from your hut you can see the whole valley as well as Mt. Kilimanjaro itself! When we arrived, even at midnight, we were greeted by several of the staff and everyone was very friendly. My husband and I were there a couple night before and after climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. The staff sang and danced to wish us luck on the trek and celebrating afterwards. Local foods are prepared for breakfast and dinner and the staff was very friendly and helpful. The lodge in general is pretty rustic, which you need to be prepared for but for us, it was what we were looking for.

Fantastic location and view. The staff are very friendly and were able to get us a highly discounted tour (however we were short on cash as students) which was highly appreciated. The lodges are nice and large and are suitable for a group of friends or a family. It's halfway up Kilimanjaro's slopes in farmland, so it isn't too touristy. Great value, we did not expect quality that good for how much we paid for our room. Recommend it.

We happened on this place via TA and promptly booked it. Nothing could be simpler. T&C clearly posted on the website and they did as promised to the letter. We were picked from KIA Lodge at the Airport and after an interesting drive we arrived at this lovely place. We found everything as we expected it to be. This was the first place I have stayed in Africa with feeders for Sunbirds. At least six species were noted as well as other birds. Rooms were comfortable, the lights and water worked and the food was excellent. The price was the most reasonable of the places that we stayed at this trip. Control was a little vague at times, they threw the farewell party a night too early but who cares? (maybe they were trying to tell us something?)
We got the distinct impression that whatever we asked for would be provided if possible.
Whilst our visit was marred somewhat by very big storms in the afternoon which curtailed our planned forest walks we really enjoyed our stay of four nights and will hasten back soon.
If like us you hanker after a simple place in the countryside with little to distract you from the pleasures of nature then this is the place for you. But do NOT expect wall to wall luxury. This is a community run and owned venture and merits a visit.
And the big bonus was it lived up to its name. Kibo, Mt Kilimanjaro's main summit, was clearly visible each morning before the aforesaid storms rolled in.. This is a mountain climate at 9.000 feet so care is needed against the African sun.
