Owner description: Summit Expeditions & Nomadic Experience (SENE) is a high quality Tanzania adventure travel company offering day excursions hiking on Kilimanjaro and the surrounding remote villages, bicycling through the coffee farms and African savannah, and running the forested trails encircling the mountain. We provide exquisite accommodations and an unparalleled cultural experience in our Mbahe Village guest cottages high on the slopes of Kilimanjaro on SENE owner Simon Mtuy's ancestral farm. SENE was founded in 1998 by Simon, mountain guide and international ultra-runner, who continues to carry out his vision of a sustainable, ethical, locally-owned adventure travel service that promotes the beauty of Tanzania while contributing to the well-being of its people and environment.

December 2013 we visited Tanzania. SENE arranged both our climb and safari, and they exceeded our expectation in regards to both service and execution of the trip. We didn't have a single glitch and the staff was very helpful and supportive through out the process. For us it was a benefit that company was local and that we stayed at Mbahe Farm instead of in a hotel. The room was spacious and pretty and we really enjoyed the food, which was based on locally grown produce. During our stay we also hiked the area and swam in the waterfall.

We did the Lemosho route over eight days. All the staff was very friendly and helpful, and really went the extra mile to help us out. I have lots of food limitations (gluten and lactose), but it was never a problem, and my tummy was healthier than ever. Many days we were served hot meals for both lunch and dinner and the soups were phenomenal when the appetite disappeared. It became clear that we had very experienced guides with us and we felt very well taken care of. Of course the goal was to summit (we did) but the journey up and down was beautiful.

The safari tour that followed was as amazing as the climb. Our guide knew the parks very well and we got to walk next to giraffes, see lions mate and much more. It has been a fantastic trip and I highly recommend SENE.

SENE is a local company, so we hesitated a bit to arrange everything with them. But they gave us very good information by lots of emails. Tim made us a good itinerary and gave us payment conditions who gave us confidence to arrange everything with a local company.
The safari was great, also the lodges ( clean, very friendly staff, good food) and our gide Joseph was also excellent. The farm house was a nice stop over: Nelson was a very friendly host and the cook was friendly and made good food. The cycling, had a nice start: a hike to the mambo view lodge! It wasn' t planned but a very nice thing to do. The cycling in the mountains was incredible. We really enjoyed the nature, the places where no much tourist will ever come. We could ride on quiet small roads. It was nice to have a small group and the sphere among us, Sebastian, Simon and Joseph was just like old friends! Mambo view lodge, Swiss lodge, Emau Hill camp were very good , Tent and food was good, but the shower/toilets in Nilo reserve were not so clean. Lunch during cycling was good. Joseph ( driver ) was really helpfull and always friendly and smiling. He really deserves a triple A!
The Capricon at least, was a perfect place to relax and to enjoy the impressions of Tanzania!
Also the flight to Moshi and the short stay in the hotel over there were a nice end of the great holiday! We really appreciated the changes SENE made in our itinerary, without any problems, caused by our missed flight due to the bad weather conditions. Thanks to everything from SENE
for the amazing holiday!

I recommend everyone should try a running tour in the Mount Kilimanjaro foothills, either as an add-on to their summit attempt or as an activity in its own right. Depending on fitness you could take the route as a walk/run or even wholly walking. Simon and the team are good fun to be with and won't push you faster than you want to go, so don't be put off by the tag 'Running Tour'.

We ran across the Mountain, rather than up it, which means staying in lush vegetation and passing by small farming communities. As well as enjoying the run and the smiles from people we passed, I found it very interesting to have an insight into communities which are very different from life back home. Simon commented that groups who go straight up Mount Kili do not see much of this as you quickly get above where people live and farm. Being from the area he knows a lot about both the local people and wildlife, and passed this on whilst I was stopping to catch my breath!

As per other comments the organisation and communication from Simon and Tim were great, and the warm welcome from Wilson and the guys at the Farm was really nice after a long journey. Mbahe Farm is a great place to stay - all the comforts you need, and away from the busy-ness that most 'westerners' like to escape from.

Definitely recommended

Recently my husband and son went to kilimanjaro. They had a few extra days after the hike to do a safari. My husband contacted Summit Expeditions and spoke to Tim in the United States. My husband commented to me how resourceful and nice he was and was very excited about the safari after the climb. Unfortunately, my son and husband had a medical emergency and they had to leave Kilimanjaro with in 48 hours. Tim was incredibly understanding and although the refund policy states no refunds if the trip was canceled only a few days before the trip, Tim was kind enough to refund us some of the feel that we paid. That was extremely kind of him and shows good character which is certainly what you want when you are on any of these climbs or safaris. Thank you again and both my husband and son are doing well.

SENE is absolutely the best company with which to summit Kilimanjaro. My wife and I just went in February. Our guides, Ayumwi and John, were exceptional. The food was fantastic -- fresh and local from Simon Mtuy's (SENE's founder) family farm at the base of the mountain, which is a real differentiator from other companies. We were blown away by how good it was.

The professionalism of the company is top notch -- they test your vital signs and oxygen levels every day, they are very cautious on the mountain, and go above and beyond to make sure you are comfortable. We cannot recommend SENE highly enough!
