“Quiet, relaxing, great views”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

We had booked the small camping tents but got upgraded to one of the lovely big tented lodges for next to nothing as it was not very full on a long weekend. Food was great and well priced with a reasonable choice considering the location. Food and wine was well-priced. The tent was very clean and comfortable - lovely beds with good quality sheets and feather duvets. Nice to sit out on the deck in the evening and great view of Mt Kilimanjaro from our tent in the morning. Very helpful and friendly staff - we felt like special guests. The lodge arranged a guide to take us on a hike right around the lake for only 5USD per person - good value.

Visiting Lake Chala was one of my favorite things I did in the two months I spent in Tanzania. My boyfriend and I went one weekend and had basically the entire camp to ourselves! We were two of eight people staying at the entire campground, with the other six all staying in the bungalows. It was very clean, hot showers, and even included sleeping mats, sheets, and pillows with the tent rental. The food was the best we had throughout our entire time in Africa, the hike around the lake was fun, and you can't beat the views (especially eating dinner looking over the lake as monkeys are jumping between trees). The staff was awesome, very helpful and friendly, and even made us our own bonfire one evening. The manager generously offered to let us use his kayaks they had just purchased, but by then our time was running out. Perfect place to read a book, drink a beer, or bonfire with friends!

Room Tip: Bungalows looked amazing, we took the cheaper route of tents which were still awesome!

The staff at the camp was wonderful. There were only 3 of us there as it was a bit out of season for most visitors. The food was outstanding and the rooms were very nice. My one complaint was that the rooms were a bit far and there was no lighting at night. We had a car and drove back and forth to the main area for meals but it was very difficult to see at night and there was no escari to accompany us. There were only a few baboons while we were there but I understand that there will be a small group of elephants and antelope later in the season. The rooms were quite nice. Very relaxing.

We stayed here for one night during a 3 week stay in Moshi. We got a taxi from Moshi which took just over an hour. The location is fantastic with great views over Lake Chala. We stayed in one of the luxury tents......and it really was luxurious. It was great sitting on our balcony drinking a beer from the fridge in our tent. It is a nice though fairly steep walk down to the lake but there is now some decking there allowing fairly easy access for swimming. When we were there we had the place to ourselves. On the second day we walked up Chala Hill which gave us some great views of the surrounding area. We ate dinner, breakfast and lunch in the bar and the food was excellent. Rob and Almarie the owners are very friendly, as was Elaine who was doing the cooking and Emmanuel who was working in the bar. We will definitely stay here again when we are next in Moshi

Amazing views of the turquoise waters from the dinning area and some of the stilted rooms.
A fantastic views through lush vegetation brings down to a wooden decking from which you can swim in these cool, refreshing waters. The food was a bit of a disappointment. On a clear day spectacular views of kilimanjaro will be available.
Lake chala is also well located to visit west kilimanjaro conservancy - which borders amboseli in Kenya and forms part of the elephant migratory route.

Really cool, chilled out place for a family. Great walks, fun on the lake and food and drink. The tents are amazing. The couple who run it are even better. Highly recommend. 1 hour from Moshi and less than that from Kilimanjaro. Elephants to be seen.

We camped here for 1 night as a weekend trip. The road up to the Camp is not the best, but this is Tanzania! And you do get nice views of mountains and see people working the fields.
The first thing we did was hike down to the lake (about 45min) and it was beautiful!!! There was nobody there and the water was clear and sooooo refreshing compared to the hot Tanzanian weather!
They made some renovations on the track to the lake since they opened: some cement stairs (not all way down) and a "dock" with stairs so people can easily get in the water without going through all the rocks. They did keep the rocks with the names carved by people through the years which is nice.
We hiked back up and took a good pressured shower with cold water (which was fine since the hike was pretty steep). One thing though: clean the cobwebs in the bathroom ceiling! There was a pretty big spider up there.
Getting out of the bathroom, there were baboons on the trees eating fruits! It was amazing! There was even a baby baboon!
We brought our own food so we didn't eat much in the restaurant although I hear the chef is good! We did have some coffee and tried the banana cake with ice cream and it was really nice!
Overall it was a really relaxing experience, great for a weekend getaway with amazing views!
