“Excellent Hotel”
Reviewed 31 January 2014

I stayed at The Springlands Hotel before and after hiking Mount Kilimanjaro with Zara Tours. The hotel was very clean and safe, and clearly catered towards hikers. The food was also excellent. I highly recommend it.

I stayed at Springlands as part of my Kilimanjaro hike through Zara Tours. The hotel is about an hour away from Kilimanjaro airport and about 15 minutes outside of Moshi town down a very bumpy dirt track. Once you get to the hotel itself you feel extremely safe as they have security on the gates and it is almost like a compound but one you like to be in. The facilities are basic but extremely serviceable with mosquito nets, A/C, hot water etc. the food at the buffet restaurant was extremely good and plentiful and the staff are extremely helpful. The pool is very nice to cool off and relax and there is plenty of shade for when it is very hot. You have the ability to book other trips (I stayed on 2 days after my hike and took advantage of their 1 day Arusha National Park safari trip) for a decent price. If you are doing the Kili hike then there is no shortage of equipment for you to rent should you have forgotten anything or if your luggage didn't make it at the same time as you. For a techie person like myself the WiFi was great although it was extremely slow and sometimes didn't work. I would normally say this is a bad thing but the fact we had WiFi at all was great. Relaxing in the garden with a cool Kilimanjaro beer was amazing.

I probably would not want to stay her for a weeks vacation but as a jumping off point for other places it was excellent. The staff were polite and friendly and you felt extremely safe.

This was the joining hotel for the Kilimanjaro trek in October 2013. This hotel feel like it is in the outskirts driving through dirt roads and following the train tracks to open up into this 'compound' type of resort. It's nice on first impressions, with basic rooms. The reception staff were unethused when checking people in, and when I requested to book an additional night after the hike there did not seem to be any record made and was just a verbal confirmation.

The hotel has a restaurant that serves food at set times. As it's further out you have to make a trip into town if you do not wish to dine at the restaurant. It's a buffet meal and the food is not bad, but for those wanting to choose what they eat your options will be more varied in town. The staff at the restaurant are so friendly and Goodluck and his team were so friendly and helpful.

The hotel has a big number of G Adventure and Zara tour groups leaving and returning from teh mountain. They have gear you can hire on site. The G Adventures rep was friendly, and the tour briefing was informative on the trip ahead.

On return to the hotel they asked for a booking voucher to check in for the included final night of accomodation. I had paid a single supplement but had not been given a voucher, just a booking confirmation from the travel agent. This had been sufficient at my first check in but at the second check in the staff repeatedly asked who I was sharing a room with, where my voucher was and that my booking confirmation was inadequate. This information should already be with them as this was an INCLUDED night in the tour and not an additional booking. They then gave me a room in the building next to the generator and the equipment hire room, away from all my other group members in the other building. This room was noisy with everyone getting their equipment and dropping of luggage from early in the morning and the generator at night. I requested to move rooms the next day but the hotel did nothing to assist making my stay more comfortable. They also did not have a record of my additional night, and hounded me for payment immediately rather than on check out with the rest of my invoice. They requested cash only payment and would only provide a receipt on request. This all felt very dodgy and unprofessional and when questioned feigned ignorance.

The hotel is adequate and is nice after you finish the hike, but there feels like there is a side business of dodginess going on as well with people making their extra dollar on the side. The restaurant staff are amazing and so so friendly but the reception staff are terrible and so unhelpful.

Room Tip: Stay AWAY from the equipment and storage rooms as it's very noisy in the mornings and the genera...

This hotel pretty much functions as the home base for Kili treks operated by Zara tours. I would not recommend anyone to stay here without the aforementioned purpose. But then Zara itself is a different topic of conversation...

I find that it gets overwhelming with groups of trekkers constantly coming and going. There's this weird group dynamic in the atmosphere with people looking and sizing each other, overhearing individual Kili experiences.

In terms of location, the hotel is far away from town. It does provide a shuttle (for a fee) to go into Moshi center, for ATMs, etc. The organization for the shuttle is confusing, and again, somewhat overwhelming. We were in a shuttle with a man on his way to the emergency room. I was nervous on his behalf. He should have been able to take a private taxi/shuttle to the ER without having to wait for random people who were just taking leisure trips into town.

The buffet meals they provide are expensive, at least relative to the local standard of living: 7 US dollars for breakfast, 8 for lunch, 10 for dinner, if I remember correctly. The food is decent.

On the plus side, they do have a decent pool and a garden for hanging out. And the staff service is good.

Final words: don't stay here unless you have to. But then again, I'm not sure what other options there are in the area.

Good functional accommodations. Is a bit off the beaten path and road which it is on is not as smooth as some of the trails on Kilimajaro. Make sure to turn on water heater when you get back from Kili. Garden and patio are nice and there is plenty of cold beer for very reasonable price. Food is fine and free wifi is great bonus . Overall nice place to start and finish Kilimanjaro climb. Very prompt and helpful staff and connections to airport

The hotel is very basic, there is hot water though and the staff are really friendly.

It is a little bit out of town but there is a shuttle that runs for $1 per person each way into town.

The food and drink is quite over priced here but they do have a nice communal dining setup for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a nice way to speak to people who have climbed Kilimanjaro or who have done a safari. Most (if not all) people staying at the hotel are doing or have done one of these trips. The buffet food is very nice and the chef makes a concerted effort to give a choice of western food along with some more local options.

If you are climbing Kilimanjaro and will be renting anything for it, Jessica and the team in the rental office are fantastic!
