“Great hotel and organised trek of Kili”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Booked through the Adventure Company in the UK who sub-contracted the organisation of the trek to Marangu hotel - so you don't just use it as a base, they also organise your trek for you. On the hotel its a comfortable haven that does what it says on the tin and lives up to the representations on the internet. Rooms are comfortable and clean and bathrooms have a bath and also a walk-in shower which is certainly needed after the mountain ! Dinner in the restaurant is plentiful 4 course affair, attentive team and great bar area with outside seating in the garden. Large choice of food menu from the bar which is open all day and local Kilimanjaro beer ! Inexpensive bar prices for beer, food and wine. Wifi also throughout the hotel which is always useful is this modern day and age.Hotel also let us stay in our rooms until a very late checkout of 4pm for free !

For the trek organisation itself, the hotel is fantastic and very well organised and prepared, so much so that it runs like clockwork. Seamus one of the hotel managers gives a very good 2hour briefing regarding what to expect, the guides they use only work for the one hotel and are very knowledgeable and keen to ensure you succeed on the mountain. The Quartermaster of the hotel is on hand to check your kit and make sure you are taking the correct items up the mountain and if you are not then lend you the correct items for free ! Transfers and buses both to the mountain and airport are well organised. In short, you should absolutely trust the hotel with the organisation of your mountain expedition.

This hotel primarily accommodates Kili climbers for a night or two either side of their climb (most of which the hotel guides); but would be a worthy destination in itself.

Delightful cottages (much better than the photos) are clean, spacious, with ample HOT water! Meals were among the best I had in Africa. I'm a bit on the picky side & was concerned about a one-entree-per meal menu, but I loved it. At dinner each night, they ask you what time you'd like tea/coffee brought by your room. When the clouds allow, wonderful views of the mountain from the well-tended grounds where literally everything seems to have brightly-colored blooms. Although I didn't get to try it out, the pool area is secluded, landscaped, and appears very well maintained. I've read the reviews here complaining about language difficulties and they did NOT match my experience. To a person (which is hard to do), I found the staff to be charming, smiling, helpful, and providing excellent service.

The owners are expats for whom English is first language & could certainly have helped resolve the other reviewers concerns. These owners know the local community intimately & can connect you with whatever you need (The hotel actually gave back land to the original families generations ago & are well-regarded with the locals.) Don't even get me started about the amazing decoration (cheers, Pete!), great times and hospitality, inexpensive prices, and overall great experience at the bar.

Room Tip: Room 1 and 28-29 are the most remote. The bar is so much fun I don't begrudge them a little fri...

The classic stay in Marangu, prior and after Kilimanjaro ascent. I've been using the Marangu for donkey's years, as a base for my 13 Kilimanjaro expeditions, when it was managed, in the old way, by the charmingly authoritarian Miss Lany, a local legend. Mrs Bennett and son have nicely taken over after her demise, improving on certain points, not least the well-appointed bar (Irish oblige). Food is lovely, wholesome if not very varied, nice set menu, lemon pie, good local coffee most of the rabbits, poultry and fresh produce come direct from the nicely tended grounds. Rooms are vast and decently appointed, with colonial-size bathtubs.
Camping ground with some sheltered spots at the rear, expedition style.

The owners and staff at this wonderful hotel are exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable; the food is amazing, the rooms spacious and comfortable and the grounds are full of flowers, birds and butterflies. Whether you are climbing Kilimanjaro (good luck!) or just visiting the area, you will not find a better hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms are dotted around the spacious gardens; we stayed in two different rooms (one before the climb...

I could only stay here for 1 night as I was travelling on business, and it was a wonderful experience. The room was spacious and well furnished, with an fantastic bathroom with shower and separate bathtub. There was ample boiling hot water for a luxurious soak. Dinner was a delicious 5 course affair and breakfast was equally delicious with a good choice of course; both were included in the cost price. The large flowered garden is very pretty, and the view of Mt. Kilimanjaro (if it's not too cloudy) was great. If you've got the money to spend, I highly recommend this hotel, and hope to stay there again.

I have been visiting the Marangu Hotel regularly since 2006 when it provided an unexpectedly wonderful respite from the rigours of camping in the Serengeti and Tarangire. It is always, always, always an absolute pleasure to stay there. And the views of the mountain, on a clear day, are stupendous, as is the birding around the colourful gardens.

The rooms are extremely spacious and well-furnished, with clean bathrooms and magically comfortable beds - much needed after an assault on a mountain - but is it is the friendly atmosphere and the owners and staff that make Marangu exceptional - and never more so than when a successful climb returns and the whole team celebrates.

The food is also exceptional, plentiful and tasty. You can tell that the vegetables and herbs are straight out of the garden. The thought of their delicious and bountiful dinners often keeps me sane as I prepare yet another of my camp-fire curries in the run-up to a visit to Marangu.

I have already booked again for May. There is no better hospitality in Northern Tanzania.

We have just returned from two night stay at Marangu Hotel followed by seven night trip up Kilimanjaro and a final night at the hotel . The family run hotel organised our trip and Desmond and Seamus did an incredible job of briefing us and arranging a perfect climb from guides to cook all faultless .
We arrived at 11.30 pm to be welcomed by receptionist ,chef and waitresses to be told that dinner would be served when we were ready ! UK hotels please note .
Desmond and Seamus were incredibly helpful and all the staff were exceptional and so friendly . I foolishly left my wallet on the dinner table containing several hundred dollars to have it returned to our room within 5 minutes . Tanzania is a very poor country and this would have represented about a years salary to the waiter who returned it .
I mentioned this to Seamus who fully expected this to be the case .
The catering on the climb was unbelievable . A sample dinner was excellent soup followed by roast chicken , roast potatoes and spinach and then fresh fruit . All this cooked in a tent !!
I cannot recommend the Marangu Hotel highly enough , fantastic service at a reasonable cost .
