“Great Stay, Bring a Jacket!”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

My husband * I stayed at this hotel in June, and the rooms are HUGE. We had a nice balcony that we sat on outside wrapped in blankets looking for water buffalo - it was in the low 60s around 4pm, and your room is equipped with a fireplace. we had them bring us wood and started our fire before dinner so our room would be nice and toasty when we returned. We slept great and woke up to several water buffalo right outside the room. Had a great stay, really enjoyed the food too!

Rhino Lodge is located at the outer rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. We were picked up at Ngorongoro air strip by our safari guide Steven, who looked after us for the next 3 days, and driven to the lodge with a 4x4 Nissan. On our arrival we were warmly welcomed and oriented about the lodge by the manager.

Our room was basic but clean and comfortable, including twin beds, toilet and shower and a small deck. A wood burner kept us warm. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Its dining room/lounge was spacious with two large fire places, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. We had buffet dinner with the guide and made a plan for safari on the next day.

We ate breakfast early, picked up packed lunch and stepped into the 4x4. The guide Steven was very knowledgeable for finding wildebeests and birds in the crater and we were always one-step ahead of other safari vehicles. Close encounters with an endangered black rhino and a lioness were the highlights.

The meals were excellent especially considering remoteness of the lodge.

Our 2 nights stay at Rhino Lodge was very enjoyable and memorable. We would like to come back for more exploration of the crater and Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the future.

This must be one of the best value lodges in Tanzania. Part of the it is a former Park Warden's house, dating back to the 1950's. Wonderful hosting, simple, clean, good food and super, peaceful location. Ignore the fact that it does not overlook the Ngorongoro Crater itself - the forest views are beautiful and wildlife comes right up onto the lawns.

The rooms were pretty basic, but clean and adequate. The location was fantastic, very nice views, and the staff were lovely. Common areas were very nice. The price was very reasonable, especially for the area.

If you look at the best value on the rim you of the crater , there are only 4 hotels you could choose from sopa, and beyond, Serena , rhino and safari.
Without any question rhino offers the best value, for approx 150 usd you get excellent dinner bed and breakfast. Rooms are modest and not pretentious , yet very clean and comfortable.

Stayed at the Rhino Lodge mainly because the lodges with a view overlooking the crater are so much more expensive but how glad we were that we chose this one. Its a place that I would recommend to anyone and would be more than happy to go back there again.

The staff , owners and all involved with the place as so accomodating and happy to talk to you at anytime of the day or night -- so friendly and enjoyed the banter. the site itself looks over the conservation area which is magical to just sit and stare and while away the time in the evening. The room had its own back patio which overlooked the jungle and right outside was a large famility of waterbuck.

The owners bring out strong torchlights after the meal and was lucky to see a bush pig (but sadly the photo was not good!!) -- the restaurant has a covered walkway oround it

Food was excellent and served in a large room heated by a central fireplace so even if it is cold outside, the place is very warm. Service was superb and so much of it -- there was no way you would be hungry.

Rooms are very confortable and havea night washroom with a lovely warm shower. You can have heatring on in the rooms if required but would think it could get very warm -- needless to say I did not.

I would recommend thsi place to anyone and hope to take my children back there one day.

Thanks to the owners and all the staff for making it an excellent stay.

Room Tip: Make sure you are looking out over thejungle arae as the liklihood you will see animals including el...

At first glance, I wasn't quite sure of this lodge. It grew on us and we were sad to leave after the second night. Two things were very special about this place: 1)The food was very good. 2)The animals were within arms distance of the lodge. Outside our back patio were 60 cape buffalo one early evening. It was spectacular to be sitting in a chair looking out at wildlife. SOOOO much fun. The downside is that the beds were big but pretty darn firm. The walls were very thin so we could hear our neighbors clearly. Basic and unique. Good to mix in with upgraded accommodations.
