Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We left the heat of the Serengeti and traveled to the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater where the lodge is located and were blown away by the beautiful lush foliage surrounding the lodge and the wonderful cool temperatures. Our room had a balcony with an incredible view of the Crater floor and we could hear noises of various animals from the jungle below us and had a panoramic view of the night sky in the evening with the Milky Way in full splendor. The room was large with a large bathroom and the food in the lodge was good. And of course, our experience in the Crater on the animal safari was unsurpassed. We spent two nights at the lodge and I would love to come back and spend more time. I can recommend it without reservation.

We spent 2 nights at this beautiful lodge during our safari trip. Definitely one of the best lodges in Tanzania, starting from the location, nicely decorated spacious rooms, attentive service, delicious food. There we really failed spoiled and yes, set your alarm clock and get up before sunrise. The view from your balcony will make you feel this place is illusory...

We spent one night here as part of our holiday in Tanzania. The lodge is beautifully positioned and all rooms have a wonderful view over the crater with clear sightings of wildlife including flamingos - especially if you have binoculars with you. An elephant was grazing in the lodge grounds when we arrived and several guests saw buffalo outside their rooms in the morning. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated. Each room has a private balcony. The food in the restaurant was good - a plus point was that the main courses and starters were à la carte instead of a buffet, which seems to be the norm with Serena lodges. Food was good, staff were helpful and friendly and all in all I can highly recommend this as a place to stay. The only complaint, and it is a small complaint, is that a staff member knocked on the door before we went to dinner and asked if he could turn down the bed - in most places this is done while you are not in the room, and of course, is not really necessary but a nice touch. Remember to wake up in time to see the sunrise over the crater.

As many lodges in the Ngorongoro CA, the Serena lodge is on the rim of the crater. Thanks to this setting, all the rooms and the common parts have a superb view over the crater, which can be seen both at day and at night.
The rooms are quite beautiful, nicely decorated and with huge, comfortable beds. The common parts are well designed, especially the bar area. Finally, the meals are quite good - the dinner, which is both a large buffet and an a la carte main and soup, is huge and good !

We loved our short time here and wish we had been here for at least two nights instead of one. The rooms are spacious and nicely appointed. The views from the main lobby and restaurant are to die for! Lovely food and service in the beautiful dining room. The lodge choir came in at dinner time and sang. It was all good. Highly recommended. It was part of our safari package with Asili Adventure Safari Tours. We were very happy with the tour company and our guide, Festo. The main company is in Nairobi, but there is also an office in Arusha. We went in the off-season.

Room Tip: Ask for one closer to the lodge and pool.

This is a resort within Ngorongoro Crater. It's chilly, so be prepared to wear some cold weather garb. Rooms are cosy ... but the best part is the awesome view of the crater below. You MUST wake up to see sunset over the crater. Food spread is adequate with good wait staff.

We arrived here after driving from the Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge and entering the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Our appetites were expecting spectacular scenery and this Lodge provided amazing views over the Ngorongoro Caldera/ Crater. It is a stone faced building built right into the edge / rim of the Crater and presents wonderful views across the whole valley. Yes with binoculars you can see a whole range of animals.
The rooms are comfortable and spacious, yes with traditional facilities , but perhaps not 5 star, but good quality and very comfortable accommodation.
Restaurant was of a good standard with buffet food for dinner and breakfast , drinks were served in good time and at reasonable prices. After dinner an excellent night of drummers and dancers and acrobats provided very good entertainment.
We were greeted by Maasai dancers and singers on arrival, it was spectacular. We were on middle level of the hotel / Lodge and had a good view , but believe the 3rd level would have been even better.
Please be conscious of the walk from reception to rooms and various levels of stairs need to be negotiated.

Room Tip: Be aware of the distance to walk from Reception and Dining areas to rooms and that there are stairs...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. ... more   less
