“Busy hotel”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

Of our fourth hotel, probably the busiest. (We spent total of 13 days in Tanzania and stayed at 5 different Serena hotel/lodge/tents. Our needs were: a great safari experience, safe and comfortable hotel (our daughter has nut allergies - so safe has a different meaning). As we researched our trip, we came across many tours that included serena hotels. On a whim, we called up Serena directly and they arranged our entire trip. A trip of a lifetime. Aloyce Otieno was our contact person and was excellent and his help).

We stayed for two nights and its a largest hotel we stayed at. Probably showed as the attention we received wasn't the same as what we were used to. This is not to say that it was bad, just not the same as other Serena. Probably has to do with 2 factors (most people stay one or two nights) and its a busy place so the personal attention wasn't the same.

We had no issues with the food (most foods were safe).

The view is gorgeous from the room. We had second floor room and I think the views are better from there. THe hotel is on the rim... don't be surprised to find "mist" in the morning that blocks your view). The sunset is amazing.

And yes, it is cold here. Wear layers.

Room Tip: second floor

It takes almost 4 hours of driving to get to this heaven on earth. Most friendly and welcoming staff were waiting for us with hot towel and passion fruit juice.
Dinner was delicious and the desserts were out of this world. Just eat everything! Loved it. I will be back!

The main thing that strikes you and that you remember about this hotel is the view over the Ngorongoro crater - absolutely breathtaking and incredible! :) Every room has a balcony view over the crater so you will never miss it, and there are views in the bar and restaurant.
The outside decor is very sympathetic to the surrounding landscape and the hotel blends into the environment. Location wise this is a real winner as we were down in the crater in our jeep each morning in no time at all!

A similar experience to our previous serena hotel - the room was very clean, well presented and well laid out. We had the same lovely comfortable bed and pillows, and the hot water in your bed during turn down service was a nice treat as it does get a little chilly at that altitude! Again, I would prefer a better shower, especially when you're out on safari all day. There's no kettle for tea in your room; however, free tea and coffee available in the bar.

Food was much tastier, more varied and better seasoned than the previous serena lodge we stayed in (lake duluti). There was a good cocktail selection and the pre-dinner snacks were nice. The house white was a good accompaniment to our meals. :)

There was a really interesting lecture in the bar - real shame for the guy as my husband and I were the only people to attend! However, everyone else missed out as we felt what we learned during the lecture really added to our experience when we visited the crater and the Serengeti. The entertainment (masai show, african drums and acrobatic show) was a good effort.

Service wise it was a step up from the previous serena lodge, but again just not on par with a similarly classed hotel back home; however, if you expect this, you will not be disappointed. :)

This is an excellent hotel with great service and outstanding views of the Ngorongoro crater from the balcony. The sunrise from the balcony was an amazing experience where we could see the crater and the lake in all clarity until the sun rose above the horizon and within seconds the view was obliterated by this amazing thick mist - a surreal experience. The rooms have no barriers for entry and my wheelchair made it in easily. However the balcony is not accessible and the bathroom is not a handicap accessible one. People with limited mobility but can stand briefly or transfer can use this facility and the bathrooms. The access to the dining room for wheelchairs is via the kitchen and the loading dock - but at least it is there and the staff are helpful. The route is not smooth and there are many places that your wheelchair can get stuck. But again the staff is there to help. The restaurant has split level and the buffet is arranged one step up, so again it is not accessible for the person confined to a wheelchair. The food is excellent. The Masi dance that they have in the evening is well organized and done in a manner that respects the culture. The car park and the loading areas are well organized. However, the access ramp to the reception is not a good one with many cracks and it is really designed as a cargo access ramp than a wheelchair access ramp. With a few minor changes this hotel could very well become fully wheelchair complaint or at least wheelchair friendly.

This hotel had everything. Great food, lovely rooms with caveman like drawings on the walls, and beautiful architecture as they tried to make the hotel look like a perfect fit. Best of all was the view! Looking down into the crater you could observe the herds of zebras, antelope, and wildebeest. Small lakes were pink with the flamboyance of flamingos. If you came to see the Ngorongoro Crater then this is the place to rest at night. Our trip was in October of 2011 but it won't let me choose that time.

Room Tip: Room facing crater. If you want wildlife eating past your room get one on ground level.

The hotel blends very well into the surroundings. The rooms were nice, the service, meals, and entertainment were great. We only stayed for one night, but it was a great oasis between two long drives.

Fantastic view to Ngorongoro crater. Very nice sunset from room balcony. Perfect food in buffet style, incredible artistic show.
Staff very friendly. One of the best places for overnight stay close the crater and visit Ngorongoro and Lake Mannyara or Serengeti.
Highly recommend.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. ... more   less
