Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

The room felt a little dated, but it was spacious and clean. The food at the lodge was good. The staff was very pleasant and they even walk you to your room each night just to make sure you get there ok. Wifi is only available in the common area, but the signal was good. The view of the crater is wonderful!

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of Thomas Cook Taste of Tanzania tour. The lodge has a great location on the rim of the crater giving fantastic sunset views. It is also on the road down into the crater giving easy access.
Rooms massive and with nice sun area. Hot water bottles provided with turn down service.
Great food again. The bar area was also nice with open fires.

Was the nicest place I stay while on safari. Bit of a drive to get to, but definitely worth it. The buffet was excellent. It very busy when we were there, so the service in the dinning room wasn't the greatest, but that would be the only fault I can find with it. Rooms were great, and the view of Ngorongoro from the pool area was amazing

We stayed only one night and were very comfortable. What was once a five star lodge is a bit tired. Service was fine, food was good, rooms were large and adequate. Hot water bottles were offered with a turned down bed. The views of the crater are fantastic.

We stayed here one night towards the end of our safari and were quite disappointed.

When we arrived we were given a cold towel and drink which was very nice after the long, dusty drive up here. The lobby is very grand and nicely decorated, leading out to the pool and seating area with a view of the crater. The view was absolutely breathtaking.

Our room was large but basic, although it did have a very nice view from the enclosed patio. The bathroom could have been cleaner (there was mildew in the shower) and it was chilly in the bathroom. The window slats did not close completely and rattled throughout the night even after waking up to close them.

The food was also mediocre. This was the only large lodge we stayed in and so take that into account. The other places we stayed were small tented camps with much fewer guests. The buffet was very crowded with people who did not have very good line etiquette. The food was also not good (with the exception of the desserts). The salads looked very good, unfortunately as we were about to serve a cockroach scampered by. The night we were there they had mainly Indian food, so we mostly had vegetables, rice, and roast chicken.

You must be careful when checking out to verify your bill. After telling the lady our room number she tried to overcharge us for another room's tab. I persisted that we could not have spent that much and even showed her our room number and she kept showing me the bill for a different room. It took about ten minutes to get her to show me OUR bill.

The view from the lodge is beautiful, but the mediocre food and discrepancy at the front desk would lead me to look at other lodging next time.

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour.

The lodge is located on the crater rim overlooking into the crater. Bi-level rooms spread out on either sides of the main lobby building. We were assigned room 22, which shares a rondavel with room 23. Both rooms are on the ground level.

There is a giant foyer with a closet upon entry.

The room had 2 queen beds and a single brought in as we were triple occupancy. There is a "sun room" area with floor to ceiling glass and 2 rocking chairs overlooking grass and trees (no into the crater views). The room was very large with adequate amount of table top surface, 3 complimentary bottles of water (nightly) and hair dryer.

The bathroom was very well lit and includes the usual toiletries. The shower didn't drain very well as the floor wasn't slanted very well. I had to push the water with my feet to get it into the drain.

Coffee/tea making amenities were provided the second night of our stay with an extra (larger) bottle of complimentary water. Not sure why the coffee/tea amenities weren’t provided the night before.

Hot water bottles warming the sheets were provided during turn down service.

Electricity was available all day. There are time restrictions with hot water. WiFi with 24 hour access code was accessible from the lobby/bar/pool area. In the lobby is a complimentary coffee/tea/snack station available throughout the day.

Breakfast was buffet style with pots of coffee and tea, for a few refills, is left on the table for you. Dinner was table service the first night and took forever! We waited over 30 minutes between the soup and our main course. I think the kitchen was overwhelmed with the large amount of people checked in the same day we did. As a result (or not) of the fiasco, dinner the second night was buffet style.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights in this hotel as part of a tour organised by Fox travel (Dutch) and their local partner Leopard Tours.

The hotel is perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater, so the view is very nice.

Upon arrival we were welcomed by the very friendly staff with cool wet towels and a glass of fruit juice, and our bags were brought to our room, which was outside of the main building.

In the main building you find the reception, a computer room, a sitting area, a gift shop and 2 restaurants with huge panoramic windows. You have to pay for the use of the computer (5000 TZS for half an hour = +/- 3 US dollar or 2,2 euro, but the connection is good)

The rooms are in two-storey buildings that resemble Masai huts.
We were in upper room nr. 40, which was close to the main building.
The rooms consist of a hall with a closet and a mini-fridge, a bedroom with 2 double beds, a sitting area by the window with 2 wicker rockingchairs, and a bathroom with a walk in shower behind a wall.
Everything was very clean, and the waterpressure in the shower was excellent.

We stayed at the hotel in the month of May, and during our stay it got quite chilly in the evening and early morning. This was no problem however, because the staff put the heater on in the evening and put hot water bottles in the bed.

There is a kidneyshaped pool in front of the two restaurants, with deckchairs around it.
Our original program included a half days rest at the pool, but since there are better things you can do in Tanzania than sitting by a pool, we opted for a walk with a Masai ranger, Mathayo Nkiti Ndari.
The walk itself was not so spectacular, but we learned a lot about the traditions and the way of life of the Masai and had a lot of fun. Another option was a visit to a Masai village..

On one of the nights we were there the hotel had organised traditional dance performance of a group of Masai warriors in the lobby, and the second night there was an outside BBQ.

The food was in this hotel was delicious. Some items were laid out in buffet style, some others items were heaped on your plate by members of the kitchen staff at different stations of the buffet and the drinks are brought to your table by a waiter.

We encountered a lot of wildlife in Ngorongoro crater, and really enjoyed our stay there.
