“Great hotel”
Reviewed 27 February 2014

Great place to stay as very short drive down into the crater. Large and comfortable room and bathroom. Good bar area and views to crater. Efficient and friendly service. As we had stayed for three nights we were treated to a choir made up of members of staff bearing a cake to our table after dinner. We had seen this happen the previous evening and presumed someone had arranged it for a birthday celebration.
Our stay was booked for us by ' real Africa' who did a great job arranging our trip.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms which are higher up with better views.

We arrived late, so unfortunately got room 26 which is so low there is no view. The good news is that the room is very large and very nice. There is a small seating area at the window and the bathroom is big with a huge shower. The only downside is that you can only get hot showers between 5 and 8 so arriving late made us rush to get a shower.

The views at the lodge are beautiful and the swimming pool would have been a welcome relief after a day of traveling. The dining room is gorgeous and we ate late enough to hear the choir sing, which was great. Unfortunately we weren't happy with the food. The meat they cook on the grill was way overdone and therefore super hard to chew. Other items were just odd, so we ended up eating spaghetti. The soup was excellent as we had found all soups in all lodges thus far.

Breakfast was fine with fruit, cereal and hot item choices.

We have stayed at the Sopa Lodge at Ngorongoro Crater on three different safaris - and I would highly recommend them for two reasons. One is location - it is on the east rim of the crater which provides quick and easy access to the crater and secondly, it is an excellent lodge - rooms are clean, food is varied and appetizing, staff are great. The lodge was originally recommended to us my Hosking Agoi, Managing Director of Affable Tours and Safaris, Nairobi, with whom we traveled. Our safaris have included Kenya national parks first and then on to Tanzania and the best game viewing at the Crater - my absolute favorite for wildlife photography. I have known Hoshing Agoi for 12 years now and Affable Tours and Safaris is our go-to safari company. It is very well run, Agoi himself is a remarkable guide, businessman and humanitarian. Couldn't find a better person. And so his company reflects his attitude, experience and outstanding service. Highly recommend Affable Tour and Safaris!

Compared to the intimate lodges and tented camps we stayed in for the rest of our safari, Sopa was a gigantic, well-run, slightly generic experience. By the time we stayed at Sopa, it was a respite from adventurous lodging, but I wouldn't recommend spending an entire trip here unless you have a large party, with picky family members (little kids, elderly parents, etc.).
The food was quite good, with buffets on weekends that had tons of options. The boxes lunches were also unusually good!
The complex has an amazing vantage point for viewing the crater (if the fog ever lifts for more than a minute).
The pool appeared to be unheated (almost too chilly to dunk your feet in during February), but takes advantage of the great view.
Our room was very nice, with two large beds, a sitting area, an entrance area, and a pristine and rather large bathroom.
Also, this hotel had some nice extras available: express laundry, full turn down service, onsite shop, and entertainment, which can be really comforting after several days in more rugged lodging!

We stayed 2 nights at the conclusion of our safari. It has a great view of the crater, and our room was huge, with a nice solarium with two chairs and a table. The meals were good, with plenty of options at the buffet, from an international menu with a good Indian sub-continent selection. The pool looked nice, and despite the cool of February some souls were in. Staff was attentive, but boy, are the servers worked to a frenzy by the supervisors. It was Valentine's day, and the ladies were given a red rose at the deocrated Dining Room, and there were some wine specials. The entertainment was culturally appropriate and interesting. The beds were fine, and the bathroom large and clean. As with many hotels in Kenya and Tanzania, do not expect instant continuous hot water, and expect a sewer system limited by the location. The traditional arrival greeting with moist towels and a drink is nice. The gift shop is decent.

We stayed here for a couple of nights in February and were pleasantly surprised in that the hotel was better than we had expected. It is true that it is a large facility that attracts tour groups. As well, it is a bit lacking in character and is dated. On the plus side, however, the rooms are large and clean. There is a nice sitting area in the room as well as a main patio with a spectacular view of the crater. We thought the food was very good, especially when it was plated vs buffet style. The lounge is a comfortable place to enjoy a nightcap. The hotel is well located for entrance to the crater in the morning. My biggest "complaint" with this hotel is that it was the only place we stayed over 12 days where staff were obviously chasing tips. In the process, their efforts to provide good service were sometimes overdone.

Big bathroom, big bedroom, big closet, big views!
Dinner was great. They even brought the desert to my room.
Bar was awesome... i had a 'Crater Blues'... recommended.

But above all location is the best.
