Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge
Reviewed 14 July 2014

We stayed here purely for the view and it was well worth it. The rooms were clean, the food plenty and service very friendly.
I can't imagine visiting Ngorongoro without staying at a lodge without a crater view.
Waking up to the early morning mist moving across the crater rim only added to the experience.
The dining area although large had a warm feel about it but the crater view from the verandah with a cold drink was excellent.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms with a crater views will be worth it.

We were met by a friendly efficient staff with a glass of fresh juice and a moist towel, which was just what we needed after a 6 hour game drive in the crater. Our room was nice (not dated), had an excellent view of the crater, and was very clean. There is a long veranda for relaxing, taking pictures, and having a drink. The sunset was off to our left, so no photos there. Also, in the morning the crater is fogged in, so there were no photos then either. The fog had lifted by the time that we got to the overlook though.
The restaurant was buffet style and the food was good, especially the desserts! Unfortunately they charge for internet (in the lobby) and it is a bit slow, but we got our emails checked satisfactorily. We had warm showers with no "scalding" problems that other reviewers mentioned.
Check in and check out were easy. I cannot comment about cost, as SED Adventure Tours upgraded us without charge to this lodge from a tent camp. Needless to say, we were delighted!

Room Tip: overlooking the crater, to the left of the lobby as you enter the lodge.

We went to Ngorongoro towards the end of the Big Rains and we were advised that we would need to stay in permanent accommodation rather than use the roof top tent on the Land Rover we were driving across Tanzania.

Arriving at Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge we were welcomed by the staff with the usual drink and hot towel and shown to our room down a long and rather dark corridor. First impressions? Tired!

The room had a simply stunning view which is why they can charge the prices they do, but in terms of the room itself it was definitely in need of serious renovation although in fairness it was clean. The bathroom was small and old fashioned.

Dinner in the restaurant was just OK, the food was acceptable, service about adequate but we could have done without the "Masai" musical group who were half hearted and repetitive.

In all honesty, it is difficult to be very positive about this experience. The main draw is the position of the Lodge which is stunning, but to pay for a view which is so similar to that available for free at the overlook car park seems perverse.

We could have camped on the Land Rover, saved ourselves a bunch of cash, and been just as happy.

Would not go back to the Lodge, would go back to the crater. That was an unbelievable experience

This hotel is booked just for the view from the hotel. It was awesome. The hotel feels like it would be on a ski hill somewhere except you get to look over the nice crater. Hotel was decent, clean rooms and good food.

This lodge was lovely to stay at. The welcome from reception was lovely - fresh juice and warm towels was just what we wanted after a full day on safari.

The views were spectacular, the staff very friendly, and the restaurant set menu lovely.

Room Tip: By sure to have a room overlooking the crater for spectacular views during the day and evening, and...

The hotel is situated overlooking the crater. Our rooms were situated so you could look out of your bedroom windows and see the crater. This was amazing. As it is so high up to took a fair amount of time to get to and from the lodge from the crater and it is quite cold so be prepared for that! There isn't a pool as it is too cold at the lodge. The food was great with great live music to go with the food. Unfortunately staff felt the need to place all guests next to each other at tables even though there was only two or three guest parties. I would definitely recommend this lodge, it was great!

We stayed here one night in low season. It was quiet, but we enjoyed the stay. The rooms are fine - not luxury lodge standard, but certainly adequate. The bar/restaurant is interesting - it looks very much like a ski lodge, and as such it wouldn't be my cup of tea in high season. There is a long terrace with stunning views of the crater.
The staff were friendly. The food was good. It's well worth taking a look at.
