“Overlander Hanoi/Nanning/Hanoi”
Reviewed 19 May 2013

I really did not know what to expect except that I have agreed to go overland from Hanoi to Nanning (Quangxi Province)
The overland by a 16seater bus was quite pleasant taking over 3.5 hours to Lang Son and cross over the Vietnamese to the Chinese Border. The passport clearance on the Vietnamese side was somewhat chaotic and the walking distance between the Vietnam post to the Chinese Immigration clearance was quite far, bearing in mind that you need to trolley your somewhat heavy bags across.
There are electric golf carts for the purpose of transporting travelers but this is only part of the entire length.

But once you have gone through the Vietnamese Immigration, the change was quite a difference and the clearance with the Chinese Immigration Posts was far better and uniformed. From then and when you put a foothold into Chinese territory, you really feel much at ease and with wide open spaces and scenic walk towards the bus station.

The bus shuttle or taxi will then take you from Dong Dang to PingXiang where you then board a big bus across a great highway towards Nanning (this takes another 4.5 hours) but due to the smooth bus ride, the 4.5 hours seem a lot shorter?

Arrival in Nanning was truly a great difference coming from Hanoi. It’s a big modern city with lots of big walking malls and many shopping centres. BUT almost all shopping centers are deserted and not many shoppers. The night-Markets are filled with people – street side shopping and abundance of eating stalls. This makes a lot easier when looking for food but then, there are also many small to medium restaurants of all kinds.

I stayed in the Vienna Hotel in the center of the city and within walking distance from all kinds of activities such as food, shopping malls and shopping centers. The hotel is a standard 3star and rooms are quite comfortable, except that they are still using the “carpet” flooring concept which is not very conducive for guests who are allergic and having “breathing problems”

But above all, it is a reasonably priced hotel and with sufficient facilities for what I needed. Only inconvenience is that there is no wifi in the rooms and one has to go to the lobby if wifi is needed?

From 1-10 I will give this Hotel Vienna a reasonable 6.5

The staff speak some English, but if you speak absolutely no Chinese, this hotel could be challenging. If you speak a little Chinese (as I do), then this place is a great value. The rooms were well furnished and clean. (There were some spots on the carpet -- if you want your carpet spotless, I expect you will have to pay considerably more.) Buffet breakfast was Chinese style, so if you are expecting an international buffet breakfast, this place is not for you. I would note that Chinese style buffet breakfast has not killed the Chinese and probably won't kill you. The price is right RMB 20.

The facade of the hotel looks like many 4-star hotels in Nanning, with a `crown-like' top, which could have been a revolving restaurant. Its location, however, beats many since it is near to the Railway Station, near to the Airport Bus Terminal (next to Yin Ye Hotel) and Zhongshan Food Street. Taxi drivers and three-horse vehicle (similar to Thailand's tuk-tuk) are easily available as one walks out of the hotel to the roads. But taking one back may need to repeat the name: Vienna Hotel many times as the pronunciation of Vienna to Chinese does not sound the same. Another plus point is the shopping Centre adjacent to the hotel and its small cafeteria serving the branded Vietnamese 7-coffee!

The receptionists are efficient and friendly. We wanted to travel to Bama City and we did not want to bring our two luggages along. So we asked and we were allowed storage of our luggages in the hotel until our return. And when we came back, we were checked into the hotel in no time!

The room was huge with two complementary bottles of water, green tea bags and toiletries. The aircon and the TV controls were easy to handle. Like other hotels in Nanning, the bathroom comes with see through glasses separating the beds and the shower area. But this hotel has a curtain to close the view if we want to have privacy.

We were told that the hotel has a business centre. We searched and found it right near the lift at the ground floor. It is a small place but we could get things done here. Day trips to Detian waterfalls or the North Sea or Vietnam and many other places are available for booking. The only thing for improvement is the free computer located beside the lift. It is meant for guests. But the location makes surfing awkward. I thought the hotel could provide a small place next to the business area, schedule guest to use the free computer for half an hour after which it becomes chargeable. As it is, surfing the net to book for hotel or to check in our flights strains the eyes and tire the legs. But there are many `internet-cafe' in the vicinity. The fees charge are very reasonable......only that we have to beware of virus and hack-in.

One last point - in case you are looking for the long distance bus station to Yangmei Old Town. It is located near to the hotel but we have to use the old-fashioned road directory - by asking around!
