“Stained and Mouldy 3-Star Bathroom”
Reviewed 1 April 2013

The lobby and room itself look fine, a bit dated but can still fit the bottom-end of a 5-star, but the bathroom really needs a complete overhaul and barely deserves even a 3-star. I've stayed in budget hotel chains that charge RMB 200 or less a night that had better bathrooms than this.

All in all we had a great stay at this hotel. The staff were generally very helpful. The rooms were a little dirty, but nothing that a new carpet couldn't sort out. This hotel was advertised as a five star, but should really be compared to a four or three star in North America. They were trying very hard to be a luxury hotel, but the rooms need a little extra TLC for that...

Do not use the restaurant in the lobby for anything but breakfast. We ordered a hamburger the first day we arrived and quite frankly it was disgusting. Not even sure it was beef...! There is a great noodle restaurant in the basement of the building that is frequented by locals and serves up absolutely delicious food.... We ate every meal in this place.

For the price the hotel is good and worth a stay. Nicely located by the lake with some nice paths and grounds to walk on.

Room Tip: Ask for non-smoking

I stayed in this hotel as part of a large UN conference, and it turned out to be an absolutely marvellous experience. The check in took a little while, but the lobby is quite relaxed and spacious. This is a high rise right on the Minzu Dadao, in the heart of the Nanning business district, and minutes by cab from the food street (zaoshan lu) and the shopping district across (chauyang lu) and on the banks of the South Lake (with its extensive gardens). So in the mornings you can go for lakeside walks and watch the Chinese do Tai Chi, and in the evening you can go to Chaoyang Lu and watch the young Chinese splurging. Location apart, the hotel has some of the best conference facilities that you can dream of, but the food is just OK (and expensive, at a minimum of 50 RMB per dish) so eat out at nearby restaurants. The 5 lifts work on fuzzy logic, so you never have to wait very long for one. There's a hairdresser at one level below the lobby, and a night club too - but its not clear if it was open to hotel guests. This is a place that has a lot of international conferences, so most staff speak English. Some problems with the card keys but after the initial hiccup that was quite ok. Overall, very stylish business hotel, but also good for personal travel.

The hotel is located is next to a lake and that is its biggest attraction. There are lovely grounds and walking paths around the hotel around the lake. I had great expectations from the food since every other Chinese city that I have stayed in, the food has been exceptional. Given that I didn't find the food of comparable quality especially at breakfast. The rooms are good but the English channels on television are limited - only one was working in my room. The hotel is located in the business district, eating and shopping places are over 5 kms away, about 15-20 minutes by taxi. It is here that you get to feel the spirit of the city, in the business district it is all tall buildings like any modern city of the world.

Good bits: staff now can speak some English. Good pool, right next to good park for walks. Public areas clean and tidy
bad bits: room carpet filthy, breakfast poor- get early or its gone, not much for western tastes. Poor gym.

After arriving to the hotel at 9 pm from the airport, the hotel informed us our 2 room reservations were unavailable. We booked 1 room for 1 week and 1 room for 2 1/2 weeks. After some heated discussions, the clerk let us look at other rooms that "might be available" at higher prices than we had reserved. We found a suite that could fit all 4 of us and requested sheets for the couches for our 13 and 16 yr old. No we cannot supply sheets unless you pay for 2 additional beds we were told. We finally agreed to two rooms that they "found" but said we could only stay one night. By the time we settled into our room with dirty carpets, stained couch and chairs and frayed wallpaper, it was midnight. Next day we moved into the Majestic hotel which was cleaner, much friendlier and was very accomidating.

My family and I stayed at the Wharton for one week of our adoption trip last month. It was all arranged by our travel agency so not our choice but everything worked out well there. The staff could speak English well enough at all times to help us and they were all courteous and helpful. They exchanged currency for us and were always available to answer questions, help us with taxi's, etc.

Our stay included the Western breakfast buffet every morning and the food was better than most American breakfast buffets, but not the best food we ate while in China. The "egg salad" was just halved hard-boiled eggs, for instance. On the other hand, we didn't travel to China to get good Waffles, so that was OK. We ate the Chinese food at that buffet and in the Shen Zhou restaurant in the basement most of the time and enjoyed it. We're not Chinese cuisine experts by any means but we all enjoyed the fried rice, noodle soups and bao pork buns very much.

The room was small and the beds are very firm compared to what we get in America but we adjusted quickly. The house cleaners kept the room very clean and properly stocked at all times. We had a nice view from the 14th floor of the city and a bit of the nearby park.

Speaking of which, the lake and the park right next to the hotel are great. If the weather had been cooler and less rainy during our stay, I'm sure we would have been out walking around there most of the time. The hotel is sort of set off by itself but there are taxi's and buses to take you anywhere you want to get in Nanning. They're cheap and easy to use so go for it.

In general, we enjoyed our stay in Nanning very much and would stay at the Wharton again the next time we visit Nanning.
