The Aureum Palace would deserve 5 stars anywhere, but is such an oasis of calm and beauty amidst the stark landscape of Bagan, it feels like a six star property! The rooms are enormous and have a very Asian 'feel' to them, the pools (yes, two) are lovely and the setting and landscaping are unique and quite spectacular. The music in the evenings was also a welcome addition, yet it was not obtrusive or overbearing. A highly recommended hotel.

After seeing lots of temples, its great to have a relaxing time at your hotel. Especially with smaller children. We went to Bagan for 2 nights with our 5 and 8 year old kids in April. The sign seeing is fantastic but the hotel made it even more mind blowing. We stayed in the palm tree villa. Woke up with a view of the temples! For the kids a really nice swimming pool to cool down in the afternoon. After a siesta we were fresh and ready to go and see more of Bagan.
The restaurant food/ breakfast is not very special. But we did not mind it that much since the rest of the hotel is fantastic. The staff is very helpful and great with kids. Go there and explore!

Room Tip: Palm tree villa is great when you have older children with you who like to sleep on their own. We ha...

We stayed at Aureum Palace Hotel, Bagan for a couple of nights. The property is just a 10 minute drive from the airport. It is situated away from the main Bagan town, has has pretty much nothing but Pagodas surrounding it. The hotel is majestically built and all the teak wood gives the property a very royal feel. We had booked a deluxe double room. The room was pretty large with a very tastefully done up bathroom. The room had a small attached verandah opening into the pool. The property has an infinity pool near the reception overlooking some pagodas. The property also has an observation tower built inside the compound which gives an amazing birds eye view of all the main pagodas and more in Bagan. The breakfast buffet was good. The only drawback is that the Wifi in the hotel is unreliable and is available only in the reception and the restaurant.

All in all, this property is good both as a base for visiting the Pagodas of Bagan and also for just spending a day lazing around in the hotel.

Well located 10 mn from the airport (which makes it convenient), in the middle of the fields dotted with pagodas. Rooms very well appointed. Be careful with the steps when you step out of the bungalows, I twisted my ankle fairly seriously.
The view from the entrance through the pool and on to old pagodas is really amazing. I had a very good massage at the spa.
The ugly tower next to the hotel (which got UNESCO very upset) is well worth going to the top as the view is great.
Food is good, although I would not classify it as great. Good buffet breakfast (for my taste).
Staff friendly and helpful, if they can be.

Room Tip: If you don't like to walk too much to the dining room, ask for a room close to the dining room.

We were so pleasantly surprised by this hotel and its beauty in the oasis of pagodas and temples...the staff couldn't have been more accommodating with a late checkout and allowing us to return to our room and use the pool before an evening flight.

The "cabin" itself was as luxurious and nice as any resort we have stayed in Southeast Asia, and we have high standards. The pool too was amazing, and conveniently not too crowded during the day as all the tourists were out on day trips. Our only complaint is that there was an incentive trip with a large obnoxious group staying there who took over the place for their special dinners in the evening...spoiling the enjoyment for the other guests. This probably doesn't happen too often.

Definitely try to take the balloons (the incentive trip had fully booked it), but if you can't do view the temples from the tower. . . our guide had never been up there, and even he loved the view. Also, don't miss Mt. Popa (a highlight for us)....our guide was reluctant to take us there but we really enjoyed the break and loved the climb to the top as well as the countryside en route.

Room Tip: Definitley splurge for a private "cabin." Ask for one closer to the pool and dining room...

It all started so well. The first impression was very favourable - a large resort hotel with statues, fish ponds, temple views, infinity pool, etc. Our villa - number 101 - was spacious, well appointed and enjoyed a view of the lake and temples beyond. Jackpot! Well not quite. The first night was fine - no problems. The second night, we awoke feeling very hot and realised that the aircon wasn't working - nor were the lights. In a land famous for its power cuts, we thought the whole hotel was powerless, until dawn when we realised that other villas were not affected. We reported the problem to reception and a technician promptly arrived to fiddle with the fuse box. Five minutes after he left, the fuses tripped again. This went on several times until it was clear the guy didn't have a clue as to why the fuses were tripping, and we insisted on being given another room. We were moved to room 201, which seamed very hot when we first went inside, but we thought that was just because the aircon had just kicked in. We went off to the pool and returned two hours later to find the room just as hot as when we had left it. The temperature reading on the aircon control confirmed that the aircon was having no effect whatsoever. We informed reception. Clueless technician shows up, presses a few buttons on the control and assures us that the room will be much cooler in half an hour. Time goes by and it's still no cooler, so we ask for it to be looked at again. Technician comes back and fiddles with the aircon unit outside and says the gas is low, so he replaces it. Another hour passes and the room remains like an oven. We filmed the aircon control and show it to reception to demonstrate that the room isn't getting any cooler. Technician come back again and fiddles with the gas.

In the end, we lose our cool and demand to see the duty manager. We'd spent the best part of a day going to and from reception trying to get the power or the aircon fixed. In fairness, she was apologetic and offered to give us a meal on the house but the problem of the aircon remained unfixed and we had to endure another night in a stifling room.

So in summary, the place looks great and has been built to impress. However, scratch beneath the surface and things don't look quite so wonderful. The electrics are obviously a problem - see the earlier review about a guest who suffered a 220V electric shock when taking a shower - and nobody seems to know what to do when the power goes off. All in all, a disappointing experience.

Room Tip: One with electricity and aircon would be a start
