“A bit tired, but still a good hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2014

We stayed here for a total of 3 nights on a recent trip to Bagan. The first night we had a small, but charming room on the banks of the Irrawaddy. Great view, peaceful night's sleep. Returning from a night at Mount Popa, we were upgraded to a whole villa, just for the two of us. This was huge and on first look amazing. Closer inspection revealed it was slightly shabby round the edges, but still a great place to stay. In fact the whole hotel has a slightly neglected air - the thatched roofs are old, the gardens are strewn with fallen leaves and the public toilets not well cleaned at all times Despite this, the staff were all extremely friendly, but maybe not well trained! On the plus side, the views are great, both from our rooms and the river terrace restaurant and the hotel has its very own ruined temple in the grounds, with many of the rooms built in a similar style. There is a nice looking, but cold, swimming pool, and the food is pretty good. Ask for a room with a river view and you should enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Ask for room with a river view.

You may see lake view, garden view, beach veiw all around world. However, there are little hotel which can offer you a "Pagoda View". By the name of "River View", we only imagine a hotel on the river, but have not expected a hotel located in the acient architectures! It was amazing to sit on the balcony, have some drinking and look at the maganificant pagoda right in front of you. It was quite romantic!

The room is very big and clean, room service is considerate and efficient, staffs here are very nice to us and provide any help we required.

It was also an excellent to have dinner/breakfast in the garden restaurant. During the day time, you can see the great view of Ayeyarwady River, you can see the birds fly freely and the scatted sandbar shining under the sunshine. At night, the lights, even torch can give you a fantastic experience of dining. BTW, food is not bad as well.

Located in Old Bagan, you can access to the main scenic places via bike, horse carrige or even taxi services. Such transportations are just right in front of the hotel and you may ask the staff to help or you can just head to the service provide directly, very convenient.

We also need to mention our taxi driver, who companioned us for one-day to go all around Bagan, R Yu Moe Myint, you can also called hime Jelly. The guy speaks English very well and has a lot of histroical knowledge, he knows good spot for viewing sunrise and sunset, he is also nice and considerate. We have to say he contributed a lot into our great stay in Bagan.

This was a nice little hotel made up of open-air hallways and one-story rooms. In the "back yard" area there are 2 ancient pagodas as well as a restaurant that overlooks the lake. The restaurant is fair for dinner, but the breakfast is pretty good. The rooms were clean and comfortable, but a little dated, and the bathrooms were a bit cramped. The walls are incredibly thin, and the floors are the creakiest I've ever heard. The pool area was very picturesque, but as I went in December I didn't get to enjoy swimming. I cannot speak for the price, as it my stay was a gift. The location is within an horse-cart ride from all the major and minor pagodas. If it weren't for the incredible floor and neighbor noise, I would not hesitate to recommend this location.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the end of a hall. That way you'll only have one neighbor!

We enjoyed an attractive suite with a river view and a little porch. Comfortable and near to the ruins in old Bagan. Some rooms looked rather dark, I assume these were regular rooms and not suites, they were garden facing and not on the river. I would not have been happy with one of these rooms.
Also some old ruins located right on the property which was very attractive. The dining area is lovely overlooking the river ( not sure what they do in inclement weather) but we enjoyed the view and dining by the river.
The food was satisfactory, we preferred to eat dinner out at Be Kind to Animals - vegetarian restaurant. We took a horse and cart to the restaurant and they waited and brought us back. You will find them outside of the hotel.
A good place to stay in old Bagan.

I often wonder whether state-owned businesses are all the same regardless which country it is as this hotel reminds me so much of Chinese government-owned hotels in the 1980s--they do not care about service nor customer satisfaction. To be fair, some staff are still helpful and willing to help (whether or not they could help resolve the issue often times is a matter of competency in this country), but the sheer fact that the management could put up with the current state of rooms and service shows their lack of interest in customer satisfaction. I probably should know the government of all people in Myanmar would care the least of such a concept.

Prior to arriving in Bagan, I had my worries as I went through the mixed reviews here but thought I might get lucky and it shouldn't be that bad. When we arrived, the receptionist took us a long time to check us in and one of the staff was quite rude and uncooperative. At one point, I felt that I was being lectured. We stayed three nights there, and in the end I was amused that there will always be guests arguing with the reception staff. There is no better testament than that to speak of their service.

Room was quite dated and bathroom was below basic with significant wear.Towels and all were visibly worn. To make matters worse, like many have previously mentioned, the smell of drainage for some rooms was quite serious (we later managed to change room after much protest). Plus, the shower in the first room we checked in did not work and was so old that it splashed water all over the bathroom. The second room was better and looked newer. So I guess that explains the variation of reviews here--some rooms have been renovated while others remain quite basic and "retro". Also, I heard from other guests that the more expensive suites and river view rooms had much fewer problems and some were even nice. Spend some extra money and try your luck if you really have to stay at this place.

If you were contemplating to stay here for its location in Old Bagan (like I did), you probably want know although being in Old Bagan provides immediate access to various sights, staying beyond the old city wall really isn't that bad. There are quite a few hotels right outside the wall but still within the vicinity, and they all looked fine. Moreover, even if you decide to stay in New Bagan or Nyaung U it doesn't look that bad, because you're most likely going to hire a car/horse cart for your visit anyway. The only difference I can think of is the ease of you going to a pagoda for sunrise.

Food wise, we did not eat any other meal than breakfast there. Breakfast was perhaps the worst we had in Myanmar. Limited variety and the food did not look very fresh. The idea of dining outdoors could be romantic until you see flies hovering around the food counter, and some of the fruit platter plates were not covered...We happened to be there during the New Year Eve, and the hotel staff asked us quite a few times whether we'd be signing up for the New Year Dinner. We finally decided to take a look at the menu after our first two days, and then we were told it's US$125 per person. I honestly cannot justify that price for the not-so-stellar buffet they were offering that night. We, of course, took a horse cart to eat at The Moon outside the Thrabar Gate instead.

All in all, I really cannot recommend this hotel to anyone. It certainly got all the potential to become a wonderful stay, yet the hotel management seems not interested and managed to fail in many respects. The ground was beautiful and with a few pagodas/stupas on site, and Gawdawpalin was literally just across the road. But would I go back again for all that access? Probably no, as it's not only no value for money but there are much much better options in Bagan.

We stayed at River View over the New Year's. As it was peak season and Myanmar is only opened up to more tourists in the last few years, we did not expect hotels in Myanmar to match those in Phuket or Bangkok.

With this in mind, I found River View very pleasant. The walls are indeed quite thin and some facilities need fixing here and there. The best part is the bar / restaurant's location by the river. One of the best places in Bagan to watch sunset sipping multiple rum sour. Breakfast was adequate. Be careful with the below however:

1. Reception seems to have only one English speaking staff over the 3 days we were there, we spent a lot of time waiting to get served at the reception
2. Their USD/Kiat exchange rate is quite bad (favourable to the hotel) Some hotels could give you 1 USD to 1000 (very good for tourists) and whilst you can exchange at Money Exchange for approximately 980 . At river hotel, you get 900 to I USD. On top of that, when we tried to pay with credit card, their machine did not work. We were forced to pay with USD at their very bad rate. For Bagan, best place to exchange kiat is at the airport.
3. We were under the impression that New Year's party was compulsory for all the hotel guests which turned out to be false. Worst still, we found out from the other hotel guests who only paid 35 USD per person for this dinner and we paid 135 USD. As we could not pay in credit card, and only pay in cash, there is no way we could claim the refund over the phone. The party itself was not bad but with such a price difference charged to different guests, I found it a bit dishonest.

Made to look as though it has been built in the ruins of old Bagan, this hotel is strikingly beautiful in lush, green garden settings and a view to die for. The impact is firstly exotic, then serene and you want to stay forever. Dining by the river is pure magic and just watching the boats leisurely cruise with the gentle flow of the river is tonic for the work weary of us who have escaped to this tranquille place.
