Bagan Hotel River View
Ranked #22 of 50 Hotels in Bagan
Reviewed 3 April 2009

The Bagan hotel riverview is a 3 star hotel situated on the banks of the Ayerwardy river. The 2 restaurants have good food and the main one has a beautiful view of the river where you can watch the beatiful sunsets. There are a good 124 rooms and butler serviced suites here so there is a good choice. On the subject of facilities there is asmall pool and a Spa.

Pros:

The rooms and butler serviced suites are pretty comfortable and feature rattan armchairs and teak flooring as well as lacquer vases. There is a T.V with a good amount of channels on offer and the bathrooms have two sinks. On the subject of food the resort serves up a whole choice of dishes ranging from delicious burmese curries to the exotic icecream flavours or even a bit of pizza. The breakfast buffet has good pancakes stuffed with banana's and drizzled on the top with syrup. The riverview does its share for the environment with vegetable gardens and solar panels. There is a small but rather refreshingly shady lagoon pool with comfortable sunbeds on the sundeck around it. There is a small Spa as well as a massage area for people wanting to get pampered. The location here is beautiful and the main restaurant next to the river is the perfect place to watch the romantic sunset and the fishing boats go past. The staff here are very kind and well trained and most of them speak English.

Cons:

The rooms may be nice but the bathrooms are the complete opposite. With white tiled walls and rusted bathrooms they may make you want to look away for a while. Although the food here is acceptable the buffet breakfast is far too small with only five dishes on offer. They should improve the gardens because in some parts of the gardens there are horrible little pricks that stick on to your feet and feel like splinters. The materesses are just one huge sponge and aren't the most comfortable materesses the rooms have got a view of the paths and they aren't good.

But this is what you have to expect in 3 star hotels and it dosen't really matter because it is a truely romantic and exotic holiday destination.

Tip:

Try the river cruise at sunset. It is really romantic and it makes you wish you never had to leave.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting amongst the temples of Old Bagan looking over the Ayeyarwady River. The hotel has good size grounds, the pool is a good place to relax between visiting the temples, it offers both shade and sun, the water is refreshing though a little cold. The room itself was large and well set out with a good seating area. The bed could however have been firmer. The Restaurant was well positioned by the river so that it provided al fresco eating in beautiful setting. The food however did not match the setting; dinner was fair in respect of the quality and range of food available, Breakfast was also limited in the range and quality food available, tea not hot enough and an over reliance on breads and pastries. There are some restaurants in old Bagan which could be accessed by walking (15-20 minutes), cycling 5 minutes or horse and carriage which were available from outside the hotel. Cycles were available from the hotel 4000 kyat per day, which provided an excellent option for exploring the temples.

The staff were very pleasant and attentive; they even sprinkled the bed with petals.

The hotel and the setting as whole was very romantic providing an enjoyable stay.

I have read carefully every review of Bagan Hotel River View. I know the place very well, because I and my wife had stayed there every summer since 2004. Some reviews are very negative, others very positive, everything depends on the date when the reviewers spent there one, two, or more nights.Every consecutive summer we spent there one could feel improvement in room cleanliness, laundry service, quality of food, landscaping, front desk staff skills, ever present readiness to please the visitors. All this was made possible by its extremely skillful, talented, generous, ready to please General Manager, the German-born Mr. Oliver Esser Soe Htet, President of Myanmar's Chef Association, Board of Directors member of Myanmar Tourism Promotion Board. We had not encountered any of the negative descriptions I have just read in Trip Advisor.Naturally, everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. Were there things that could have been better? Definitely! Internet connection was not always available! Guests could not read their correspondence if they had Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail. This frustrated many visitors. Interestingly, whenever the German General Manager was on the premises everything was OK. Yes, the bathrooms next to the swimming-pool had a stuffy air, air-conditioning could have helped.
The place is a tourist hideaway, all buildings hidden by the lush vegetation of a wonderfully landscaped tropical garden. Add to this ancient pagodas in the garden, an unforgettable view of the majestic Ayeyarwaddy River, the mountains beyond it, the red-hot setting sun, soon to be followed by a star-lit sky, the blinking of the lights of a pagoda on a mountain top across the river, what better setting for an unforgettable farewell dinner?
You may remark that I put all my verbs in the past tense. Ever since the hotel's German General Manager decided to quit his job in frustration, sometime toward the end of 2007, things seem to have started displeasing some visitors.
I tend to believe only what I see with my own eyes. I say this, because in a few weeks time, we will be able to update you from Bagan. Yes, as every year in the last couple of years, this year we are going back again. The fascination and awe we feel toward those 2000 ancient pagodas is stronger than a super magnet.
Just one more closing opinion: we feel that only the return of its German General Manager to Bagan Hotel River View, with free hands given to him to put into practice ( what temporarily was interrupted) his dream of turning the place into a five-star hotel, would save the place from future negative visitors' reviews.

Best Regards,

Hee Roh and Mahn Goh

I did not want to stay here, but as I was booking at the last minute there was no room at the Thiripyitsaya Sakura or the Hotel @ Tharabar Gate so I thought that the Bagan Hotel River View would be the next best. Oh dear what a mistake.
I was in Bagan for 6 nights - the first of which was unbearable - the worst bed I have tried to sleep in - it was like a sack of badly packed walnuts - just horrible and actually painful - I demanded a new room the next morning. - This was not much of an improvement. The rooms were tired and small, the bathrooms tiny with poor water pressure and not much hot water. A noisy minibar fridge was unplugged to try and get some peace. Very little sound insulation between rooms and corridor - a staff phone in the corridor rang frequently and at all sorts of ungodly hours of the night and every morning guests where off ballooning so they would get wake up calls at 5am - which meant you would also got a wake up call too.

The website promised several restaurants yet only one was open - even in high season. The river side restaurant was hopeless. We actually gave up trying to get anything to eat on our first night. We were just ignored and the poor staff had not the first clue as to what to do. Management was hopeless too. A noisy water pump or generator ran continuously on the shore and this was also annoying. Food was very average and a hit and miss affair. Order one dish one night then have it again another night - it would be totally different.

The pool looks nice but it is unheated and freezing cold.

It could be and should be a wonderful hotel, but sadly it wasn't, a local guide later told me that the management had recently left - taking most of the staff with them and - it was going rapidly downhill. I reckon it was in free fall.

The hotel grounds were nice, and the gardens well maintained, but the poor service, shabby rooms, uncomfortable beds and noise meant this was not a pleasant experience.

We only stayed at this hotel for one night - in fact we only stayed in Bagan for one night. What a shame! We were due to return to Bagan for a few more days at the end of our trip but as the political situation was worsening we decided to shorten our trip.

The Bagan Hotel River View is a good quality 3 - 4 star property. It is rated as five star but by comparison to hotels in other asian countries it certainly is not.

However having said this The Bagan Hotel River View is a charming hotel. The grounds of the hotel were for us the main feature. Where else can you dine with the Irrawady river feet away, the lights of temples on the other side of the river winking under the stars, and a gorgeous old Bagan pagoda lit up right next to where you are sitting. Bring on the gin and tonic

Bagan is very hot so the added bonus of having established trees in the hotel's gardens and a river is not to be overlooked at the end of day of temple viewing.

We are not able to comment on the restaurant food as we were only there one night - however if the quality of the breakfast is anything to go by then there should be no problems there.

The location of this hotel was also very convenient being in Old Bagan - although nothing is ever too far away in Bagan anyway.

We also enjoyed the thoughtful touches such as flowers scattered on the bed. The bathroom was a good size - particularly after some of the small ones we have encountered in our trip through Burma.

The mini bar was very interesting with Myanmar Gin for sale for $3.00 US. (I was almost tempted but thought the better of it)

A charming hotel in a beautiful romantic setting - I wish we had had longer to enjoy the facilities

Thanks to the local travel agency from Yangon- Good news, our dream of exploring the Bagan Ancient Temples were made possible in our first trip to Myanmar. Our experience in Bagan is further complimented by the excellent and friendly services of the staffs of Hotel Bagan. Not forgetting to mention that the setting of this hotel is really beautiful and exotic (lots of woods deco). We were given an upgrade to our room upon checking in and to our delight, we had the Irrawady River view.

Like in all hotels, food is something that is slightly pricey. We spend two nights in Bagan Hotel in June 2007 (Low Season) hence the F&B service was excrutiatingly slow, though portions of food serve was huge. On the 2nd day, after exploration, we found a very nice and simple local restaurant called Golden Myanmar which serve excellent local flare and i highly recommend their Fresh Lime Juice :). (This drink is especially quenching and refreshing after a tiring hot day of ancient temples exploration). This local restaurant is located near the Tharabar Gate.

To explore bagan, simply rent a horse cart (which comes with a driver) OR bicycle which you can rent from the hotel. This way is so much more fun and inexpensive.

I stayed at this hotel a couple times in the past, and was looking forward to staying here a couple weeks ago. Unfortunately, prices have gone way up and service has gone down. Perhaps somewhat understandable, as they are now full-up of package tourists.

Restaurant is in a beautiful setting and though expensive, I thought the food was very good.

Our room was ok, but not what you'd expect for $75. We stayed one night and moved over to the Aye Yar Hotel, which proved to be a good choice.
