“Lovely setting, pricey meals”

The swimming pool is the best thing about this hotel-- absolutely huge with comfortable chairs around it where you can lounge upon and have a lime sorbet in the afternoon. The rooms are fine, nothing spectacular, but have a nice wooden porch with chairs. It kind of has a "camp" feel to it with all the bungalows close together. Food is so-so and a bit bland as I've often found in Burma, and way overpriced ($9 for a salad!) so try to ask your guide for nearby restaurant recommendations even though eating at the hotel is convenient. Breakfast buffet is ok, again nothing spectacular, but you do have a nice view of the river and pool out on the main deck.

This had to be one of the most romantic and beautiful settings we have ever stayed at. While the rooms are simple, they are quite nice. But the grounds are special and the staff was very pleasant. Dinner at the outdoor restaurant on the river is stunning. From the lanterns hanging in the trees to the paper mache animals under them to the ancient temple not 30m from your dinner table to the music and views of the river, the experience is special. It is easy to walk places from here or pick up a ride just outside the gate. I want to go back just writing this review.

I stayed two nights at the Bagan Hotel at the end of February 2006. Bagan is an amazing historical site: over 2270 Buddhist temples scattered over a small, 40 square mile plain. Most were built between in the 11th and 12th century, making them somewhat contemporary to Cambodia's Angkor Wat. In my opinion, Bagan is even more magnificent.

The Bagan Hotel is located within the archeological site itself, and in fact has temples on its grounds. In keeping with this, the architechture is fashioned to fit into the surroundings. The rooms are not luxurious, but have the basic amenities (AC, minibar, safe, etc.). The public areas are stunning, with gorgeous gardens and landscaping. The pool is peaceful and lovely. The restaurant is simply an area set up on the lawn under the trees, overlooking the river. The food is excellent--definitely one of the few places in Bagan where this can be said.

The staff, while not schooled in all the subtleties of hotel service, are wonderfully friendly and accommodating. While I was out on the last evening of my stay, the housekeepers decorated my bed and pillow, outlining them with lines of fresh, colorful flower blossoms. It was quite a spectacle. (Not exactly pleasant to be squishing flower blossoms during a midnight trip to the bathroom, but a sweet thought nevertheless).

Not to be missed during a visit to Bagan is a sunrise balloon ride with Balloons Over Bagan. At $245 per person it is pricey, but it's an unforgettable experience, and just about the only way to take in the scope of this incredible place.

If you are used to staying in the best hotels, don't stay here...it will disappoint. Stay at the Sakura or second choice, the Tharabar Gate Bagan hotel instead. The Bagan Hotel was booked by my travel agent in Yangon and was not my hotel of choice. Despite its lovely setting amidst the ruins of the archaelogical old city, the hotel rooms were very average with paper thin walls and tiny bathrooms with leaky taps. It reminded me of some of the 1 or 2 star back packer hotels I stayed at in my youth. There are tiny televisions in the rooms with bad reception. The beds are not comfortable and the rooms are cheaply decorated. The staff were, however, friendly and went out of their way to be helpful (as were all the people I met in Myanmar). If you need a valid reason not to stay here, I understand that this hotel is owned by the Myanmar (undemocratic) government. (I am not sure if this fact is correct... if it is, spend your money elsewhere!). Overall, an O.K. hotel and definitely satisfactory if you are travelling on the cheap. If you want something a bit more "luxurious" (remember, everything is relative...and this is Bagan!)stay at the Sakura or the Tharabar Gate.
