“Food poisoning !!”
Reviewed 12 January 2013

This hotel as superb grounds with wonderful gardens and very nice chalet type rooms, some of which overlook the river. The rooms are very good and comfortable. The big negative is that we had food poisoning after the (expensive) new years diner. As I told the front desk manager about this, she reacted surprised and told us we were the only ones (and give us a laquerware plate advertising the hotel as a compensation). The next day at the airport we met several couples who were at the dinner and also suffered from food poisoning. Be honest to your guests guys !

Room Tip: Stay away from the river. The boats departing from the jetty, very close to the hotel, sound like he...

I stayed here for two nights and and a very nice room. The staff is lacking in communication... If they tell you that no reservation is needed for an early morning horse cart, don't believe them. If you want up early before sunrise to get to a temple, book it the night before unless you have a torch and would like to walk.

Room Tip: Facing the river.

3 nights here late Nov 12 were very enjoyable. Having read a couple of other reviews I can understand some of the comments. One night we did have some noise from one of the bars in the nearby town, not overly annoying, but in the back ground for most of the evening, but it could not be heard around the bar/restaurant area of the hotel. I would be concerned if the planned expansion goes ahead as those rooms are much nearer the noise source, but at present there is no activity on that front. On our three nights we were the only couple sitting on the balcony after dark enjoying a beer/coffee which we found a little surprising as its a pleasant way to end a day. The majority of rooms do not have a river view as such, the Grand Deluxe rooms face the river, looking out over the gardens, but are high up on the bank, so laying back a little means you can hear but not see the river, which itself is a nice background noise of chugging boats. The gardens are very pleasant and well maintained and of course do offer great views of the river. The rooms are good and well maintained, aircon good, plenty of bottled water supplied and wifi better than I had in Yangon. The food to us was pretty good, the western fare very acceptable, simple pasta or pizza dishes in the main, I was not expecting gourmet cuisine just properly cooked stomach fillers which is what they were, breakfast was good. The restaurant and bar area are very pleasant, the staff very friendly and efficient. The pool is ok, strange shape but perfect for a dip and a bit of a swim but not for those serious length swimmers. We hired bikes for a day and had a good time biking around, its very easy to do. the bikes are ok and adequately maintained, but non geared, which is not an issue if you at all used to biking. All in all this is a very pleasant place to stay, good location and setting, exactly what I wanted/expected in this wonderful place. Having biked around Old Bagan and checked out a few of the other hotels (exterior only) I saw nothing to make me regret our choice and I would come back here if we return to Bagan.

What the others say about the general outward appearance of the hotel is correct. We had a worse experience due to a few factors. We stayed three nights. For the first two nights, we had booked a Deluxe Room. This was a bungalow style room with high ceilings. The last night we booked a premium room. On our first night, after two kids and I showered, my wife went to shower and there was no hot water. After waiting and them checking and waiting some more, they discovered the water heater for the bungalow was broken and sent my wife off to another room to shower while they fixed it. While fixing it, they were in and out of our room with the door open, so that when we got back from dinner, the room was full of Mosquitos. They came and sprayed, but it was not enough to handle the problem, especially with a room that size. The kids woke with bites all over, including 7 on my son's forehead and cheek.

The next day, the hot water was okay. Then we changed rooms, per our booking. The next room was smaller and cozier (in December it gets quite cool at night). We went out for the day and came back late after dinner. My daughter went to shower -- no hot water. The same checking and time wasting (though this time, with experience, I asked for another shower almost immediately). The next room had enough hot water for my daughter and my son only ran out at the end of his shower. They offered another room for my wife and me. She had about 30 seconds of hot water, got her hair wet and then cold. It seems the section of the hotel went out. After waiting about 2 more hours, they gave us another room where the hot water had been restored.

Other issues - there are a lot of Mosquitos in Myanmar, but some places deal with them better than others. We ate at a few restaurants where they put burning coils of repellent under the table to keep them away. At this expensive hotel restaurant, they did nothing. My daughters legs and feet got bitten fiercely in just one meal.

I won't ever stay at this hotel again and recommend against it to others.

Located in Old Bagan close by the river fro where the sightseeing boats leave. Aye Yar is a low rise open plan hotel built around a very nice, but cloudy, pool. Accommodation is good with a rather rustic decor. The rooms facing this area are particularly pleasant with shaded balconies. Rooms on the opposite site have views towards the Tharabar temple area but are more open to the sun. Given the spread out nature of the area the hotel is rather isolated and you really have to stay on site in the evening unless you have access to transport. The bar is rather limited in choice of drinks and food but the restaurant looked popular. A very good way to see the area is by bike and these are available to rent by the hour ( $2 ). However better bikes are available nearby as the hotel's selection look well used!

Room Tip: Pool view rooms look best.

We arrived to a big styled open lobby with ground and buildings all around.
Our room was very big, luxury and clean with a great view of the river. The bathroom was also big with both a giant tab and a shower, We used every spare moment to sit down to watch the magnificent river view day and night.
Breakfast was very good with variety of choices. You can ask also for an Espresso or Cappuccino for extra charge.

We spent two nights here . Our room was quite small but very comfortable and had a river view. The grounds are well kept and the breakfast offered lots of choices and was good. Dinner was adequate - but by then we were tired from a day of sightseeing and probably didn't pay too much attention. We didn't use the pool - we like to swim laps, and it was one of those oddly shaped pools that offers no opportunity for exercise swimming.
