“Best hotel of our tour of Burma”
Reviewed 8 March 2014

We stayed here as part of a Riviera escorted tour of Burma, In a word excellent. Our room had a balcony overlooking the river. Our bathroom also had a large window overlooking the river, under the window was a very large bath that could fit 4 people in. Seperate shower with large shower head completes the bathroom. The bedroom featured low level relaxing lights, safe, bathrobes, and aircon. We reurned to our room to find petals on our bed, a nice touch. We ate inthe restuarant and the staff were charming, it was a short walk down tot he river where you can book a sunset river cruise, well worth it. The other direction you was in the temples of Bagan. We wished we could have stayed longer this hotel was so good.

Room Tip: Try to get a room close to the river for the view.

Situated on the Ayeyarwaddy River it’s the loveliest hotel we stayed in, a perfect place for a room with a view of the bustling working river. Small boats moved building materials, fruit and vegetables around loading and unloading on the riverbank outside your room.

Be aware that if you choose this option there is a walk which involves a slope so a challenge of disabled. (Majority of Myanmar is a challenge if disabled at this point).

Room excellent size with pretty firm but very comfortable bed with soft pillows. Large TV for fascinating Burmese soap operas!(why watch that when river provides plenty of entertainment!) fantastic big bathroom with great walkin shower, overhead rain showet, lots of hot water and plenty fo space to move and separate toilet. Only one easy chair no sofa so bed is only place to relax. Lots of storage space and tea making facilities. Desk is minute! A very small balcony allows you to sit in the evening and watch the local activity.

Gardens are wonderful, heaps of lovely plants and a team of industrious gardeners keep them watered, weeded and trimmed daily, lovely pool complete with penguins!! Service friendly, enthusiastic and helpful with moderate English spoken.

Be warned the coffee in the restaurant is undrinkable and would make excellent weedkiller! Breakfast buffet provided wide range of options from every cuisine and pastries that were quite tasty when warmed up. Lunch and dinner menu the same with extensive range of food from many regions around the world. We enjoyed Asian style food, which was good, tasty and plentiful. Wine list limited and expensive as usual in this part of the world but has some modest & easy to drink options.

Recommend taking a boat to view the sunset from the river, these are not luxury craft - the boats are colourfully painted, basic working long tail boat with wooden seats and are very noisy when running. They drive you up the river and then float gently and quietly back with the river flow as the sun sets and you enjoy drinks and snacks which your hotel can arrange for you to take along. Cost is very modest $15 for the boat for an hour and $45 for the wine!!

Room Tip: More on that entertainment on the river bank – the reason tht the hotel provides you with earplugs i...

We spent three nights at this resort hotel during our visit to Began.
Situated on the side of the Ayer a waddy river, the hotel has extensive very we'll, kept grounds and a very nice pool. The rooms were large and comfortable with all the nor am amenities. Everywhere was open plan and done in a sort of `Arabic style`. When we arrived we were put in a room at ground level overlooking a dusty road, we were not impressed so asked to be moved. We were relocated to a first floor room overlooking the swimming pool - excellent.
The staff were very friendly and efficient, the dining room was very nice and offered a full range breakfast (only comment was that there was only limited amounts of fruit juice).
Due its location you need a tuk tuk if you wanted to eat outside. We ate at the hotel and the menu was quite good as was the food quality.
The hotel needs to do something about the pigeons flying around the dining room at breakfast time, not good for hygiene.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the pool

Rooms clean, pleasant. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bathrooms excellent. Restaurant good; My only complaints: although breakfast choice was large, most of fruit was not ripe which should not be the case in this climate; also they ran out of eggs on two days.

Room Tip: Ask for river view

The hotel is situated just outside the walls of Old Bagan at the riverside. It is a resort type of hotel, with well maintained, beautiful grounds and spread out over a relatively large area. We stayed in a riverview room, directly overlooking the river. The rooms are spacious and well layed out with seats, desk and well equipped. A large beautiful bathroom (and a very small toilet) compliment the picture. Twin beds had rather poor matrasses, but were more than adequate.

We requested an extra roll-away bed for our 5 year old son, which was in the room when we arrived and adequate. However, I consider the 120 USD per night that the hotel charges for the extra bed outrageous. That costed us 480 USD for 4 nights – they can buy a lot of these beds for that money.
A very large extension to the hotel is currently being build next door. This obviously results in lots of building noise during the day. Looking at the state of the building site this will probably go on for the rest of the year. Our room was away from the building site, so it did not bother us, but we heard other guests complaining.
As mentioned, our room was overlooking the river and had a large balcony with seats. However, the river is very much a working river and the local village and boats are directly next to the hotel. This makes very nice and interesting viewing, however, it comes with lots and lots of noise. It is relatively quiet until 6 am, but then all hell breaks loose. No problem for us as we are early risers and enjoyed watching the activities, but do not expect to have a quiet lie-in. During the day it is also very noisy, especially around 4.30 pm when all local boats get the tourists on board and depart for little cruises. Do not expect to have a conversation with somebody sitting a meter away from you.
The hotel has a beautiful resort like pool, which was hardly used. At this time of year the water in the pool is quite cold and not very inviting.
The restaurant (named Mekong ???????) lacks atmosphere, but the breakfast was good with a wide choice of dishes, hot and cold, ranging from American sausages to Indian dahl dishes and Myanmar soup. The restaurant is subject to a separate review.
Staff in the hotel was friendly and helpful and helped us to organise boat trips and transport, without taking a cut. I found it a bit weird that they could not change money, but that fits in the picture of just being the hotel. Most guests came in tour groups and stayed one night only, which makes it difficult to create some atmosphere or build relationships with the guests.
We had a great time in the hotel and in Bagan. We loved Bagan and especially the very friendly and warm Myanmar people.

Room Tip: Away from the building site.

Situated next to the Irrawaddy River, the hotel offers 'western accommodation' whilst positioned in Old Bagan, next to the local river crossing point used by the local community.
River view rooms are particularly desirable, but be prepared to be woken early by the noise from the engines of the local boats ,which can start at 4.00 am.
Rooms very comfortable and well furnished. Cuisine could be improved, as would be the inclusion of tonic water in the bar to add to your gin!. Peanuts would also be welcome, especially as they are locally grown. Fantastic , friendly and polite staff.

Room Tip: Experience a river room it's worth putting up with noise, sunsets across the river not to be mis...

The location is perfectly suited for spending 2-3 days in Bagan. The hotel defintively fullfils international standards. It's all really nicely decorated, the rooms are spacious and the garden and pool area is great. What we really loved at that place was that it's so perfectly situated for visiting the temple areas. We rented bikes and could start right after breakfast our daily tours. For having a rest in the early afternoon we easily could make it back and relaxing at the pool, and starting another tour in the later afternoon for the sunset. Old Bagan has some nice, simple restaurants. For us it was perfect.
What we really want to mention here is the front desk manager and her team. As it happens while traveling in Myanmar we ran in some issues with local air ticket booking. This is odd as schedules are usually very tightly set. The front desk team really tried everything to help us and worked almost day and night to sort our issues out. Thank you again!
We would always come back to this place.
