“Comfortable, pleasant atmosphere, but not quite perfect”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We stayed for four nights in June, and overall we were extremely satisfied.
The good: the room was big and the bed was comfortable. The pool was really nice after a hot day's touring around. The dinners in the resort restaurant were excellent, and reasonably priced. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and we didn't have any problems communicating with anyone. We hired electric scooters one day for $8. Lots of fun and very reasonable.
The bad: breakfast wasn't bad, but definitely below par. No real juice, cheap sausages, sweet white bread etc. You can't walk anywhere; you'll need a scooter, car or horse cart to go anywhere of interest and to go out for dinner in Nyaung U. If you're going out for dinner in taxis a few nights in a row it's going to take a good 40 to 50 dollars extra from your budget.

We were really happy overall. It really felt like "a resort", and it was a quiet haven after a day of walking, cycling, haggling and shopping. Would stay there again if we ever go back to Bagan.

Room Tip: Nice to be in the building near the pool, but not right next to the restaurant/bar area.

This resort is absolutely beautiful. It has a very relaxing and refreshing vibe, the rooms are beautiful and well appointed with good dimensions, and great bathrooms (best shower we have had in Myanmar so far - and also there is a beautiful modern bath). Breakfast is okay, the setting is lovely, but they serve that horrible fake orange juice as all of asia does. Please real orange juice!!! Dinner menu for the restaurant is also very limited, however they are fast at service - particularly room service.
We had one big issue here, that was the lack of English skills from the staff. We were expecting very important business calls and despite being instructed 1,000 times to direct the phone call to our room the staff were incapable of doing so. Thus, one the second morning one of us waited by reception for the call to make sure it was diverted correctly, and the other waited in the room. It was the first time we have experienced that.
Other than that though, it is in a fantastic location close to all the temples, and is very beautiful, we would stay there again.

Situated by the Ayeyarwady River, the Aye Yar River View Resort is located Old Bagan. The recently renovated rooms are spacious with all the mod-cons. Separate shower & bath, air conditioning & WiFi across almost the entire resort. WiFi is not fast by Western standards but a reliable 128kbps is delivered which is more than enough for general use, including Facebook & Skype.

Staff are extraordinarily helpful & efficient, whether it be arranging bus transfers, complimentary e-bikes or suggestions for places to visit. Even a non-urgent request for extra pillows was acted on within minutes.

The restaurant features one of the most extensive menus I've yet seen at any hotel, both Asian & Western cuisines are both catered for. I sampled a number local cuisines during my 3-night stay & was not once disappointed. Average meal is less than $10. The bar menu is equally satisfying with a range of local & imported beer & wine as well as spirits & $5 cocktails. Watching the sunset with a glass of Australian Shiraz in hand did bring a sense of quiet joy.

The resort features a spa with a range of massage options available. I had a traditional Thai massage & unlike many places I visited in the region staff actually asked whether you preferred a soft or strong massage. I requested a strong massage & it was delivered as requested. Most impressive.

If you're looking for a comfortable place to stay whilst in Bagan, I cannot recommend Aye Yar highly enough. The best that Bagan has to offer is a push bike or e-bike away from the Aye Yar resort. Look no further just make the booking.

Beautiful location wedged between the Bagan Archaeological zone and the Ayeyarwaddy river.
The riverside is a hive of activity, with scenes reminescent of a bygone era: Small boats ferrying people accross the river, a constant stream of people off loading of pebbles pumped up from the riverbed by dredges (in baskets carried on the head), Large earthenware pots stacked like ancient amphoras along the beach, the incongruous sight of luxury river cruises a world away from the liitle village along the beach. Walk out of the hotel gate away from the river, through the ancient wall, past the horse drawn carriages and bullock carts and you are surrounded by the Pagodas and Stupas Bagan is reknowned for. Electric and standard pushbikes available for rent at the hotel easily cover the archeological area and New Bagan. Book a hot air balloon ride with Oriental Ballooning at the hotel for a faboulous view from the air. English speaking staff at the Hotel were most helpful planning our various excursions. The Myanmar spirits distillery along the way to mount Popa is well worth a visit on its own, with a cattle driven grinidng mill and earthenware and wok distillers.

Room Tip: Riverview rooms well worth the extra.

Let me start with the good things. This is a very fancy hotel. Beautiful rooms, swimming pool, excellent service, absolutely brilliant breakfast, the works. From this point of view, this is certainly an excellent stay.

However, being in Old Bagan, the location is terrible to do anything, unless you are willing to get everything from your hotel which, being a fancy one, is expectably extortionately expensive when it comes to everything other than your room.

Old Bagan is not a "town". It's essentially a road, surrounded by nothing. It's very pretty and quiet at night, but there's literally nothing.

- Want to have dinner? It's the hotel restaurant.
- Need a taxi to any of the other populated areas? I walked for an hour before I gave up and got the hotel's overpriced car.

Once again, the hotel is absolutely lovely, but for an independent traveller, the whole of Old Bagan feels very restrictive. You are much better off staying in Nyaung U or New Bagan.
