“Wonderful Oasis in New Bagan!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

Visited Bagan in February, 2013. What a delightful hotel! Spacious, immaculate rooms that are quiet & well appointed. Bicycles inexpensively available for use. Waterfall shower feels luxurious after day sightseeing in the hot, dry, dusty climate. Professional & helpful staff. Good Wi-Fi connection.
By far the best hotel that I stayed in in Myanmar!

Room Tip: Pool is lovely & nice to sit around but pool was closed to swimming while I was there in Februar...

We had a wonderful time during our 5 night stay at the Blue Bird Bagan in January 2013.

We had chosen this place for its tranquility, away from the large anonymous hotels in Bagan and we were very happy with our choice: the staff was very kind and helpful, the rooms were spotlessly clean, it was a great atmosphere at the pool area, the garden and the restaurant.

The absolute highlight was a flower decoration we found on the bed for my birthday and which you can see on one of the photos. I even got a letter with signatures from all the staff congratulating me. It was the staff who had all organized it by themselves which speaks for how much they care for their guests. The evening was then celebrated with a chocolate fondue - the only one to be found on our 3-week trip in Birma, it was delicous. Overall, the kitchen offers very high standard Western food which is all cooked with bottled water so even cocktail drinks with ice were safe.

We would highly recommend this place for couples wanting a hide-away from the heat and the tourists of Bagan and the personal touch of a boutique hotel. For sure we will stay here again whenever we come back to Birma.

Great hotel - perfect oasis during the heat of the day.
Pool and surrounding gardens very well kept. Very smiley staff. Would highly recommend this hotel and it was reasonably well priced at the time we went ($100 or less).

Room Tip: Pool side rooms were really nice...I think all the rooms probably look out onto the pool.

New, boutique hotel in New Bagan.

Positives:
We had a nice big room near the pool. The bed was by far the best we had in Burma and the waterfall shower worked better than expected. Free DVD collection was a nice touch as there is not a lot to do in the evenings. Nice friendly staff, tasty breakfasts and good wifi.

Negatives:
There did not seem to be one person / manager in charge and the staff at reception were very reactive rather than coming up with suggestions. Location is further out of the way than you think and the Bluebird takes advantage of this by charging far too high on the drinks, dinner and transportation.

Overall, a great choice if you don't mind being a little bit further out as it is quiet and relaxing though with limited dining options nearby.

We spent 2 nights at the Blue Bird in late March 2013. We loved the garden and pool area (esp nice in dry, dusty Bagan), and our room was absolutely enormous. The mattress and linens were by far the best we encountered during our 2 week trip in Myanmar! The bathroom was equally large and well designed with sufficient space to lay out your toiletries / personal items. At first we thought the shower was a bit gimmicky (it's actually a modern bathtub tap mounted on a tall stone column) and didnt relish the idea of standing under a solid stream of water (as opposed to a rainfall-like normal shower head), but it actually worked much better than we anticipated.

Service was fine - it's a new place so there are still a few kinks to work out regarding service...but everyone was friendly and eager to please. We agree with the review below that sending in housekeeping twice a day is a bit excessive - we kept getting knocks on the door as we were showering in preparation for dinner or napping after a long day sightseeing. This was not simple a turndown service - they actually come in and make up the room twice daily.

For us the location would be fine IF the hotel would provide taxis at a reasonable rate (and you do need a taxi to get almost anywhere...it's a good 15-20 minute walk into New Bagan). They charge 12 USD for a one-way ride to Old Bagan (or anywhere else, for that matter). When you consider a very good meal at The Moon in Old Bagan costs about 15 USD for 2 people...adding on 24 USD (round trip) for a taxi seems disproportionate. We simply called the taxi we'd taken in from the airport and had him take us to Old Bagan for dinner (5 USD).

We did not eat in the restaurant as the prices there seemed disproportionate as well, and beware the laundry charges! The prices were 3 -9 USD per item - even a simple pair of socks, so if you had a decent load of laundry for 2 people, you were looking at almost 40 USD. Hold off and do your laundry elsewhere.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the Blue Bird...if they can slightly tweak the service and bring some of their pricing back into the realm of reasonable, it would truly merit an "excellent" rating.

We had a fabulous stay here - the rooms were lovely and the resort garden and pool area was peaceful and very relaxing. The staff were very friendly and keen.

In the heat of the day, it was far too hot for temple viewing and great to be able to come back to the hotel for a swim.

The food we had at the restaurant was fresh and tasty; the cocktails were very nice although a bit weak.

The bikes for rent were in great condition (better condition than those we hired elsewhere in Burma) - and we enjoyed riding the bikes into the heart of New Bagan town for dinner and drinks.

Whilst it would have been more convenient to have been based in Old Bagan, it was well worth the commute to New Bagan to be able to relax in the garden and pool area.

THANK YOU for a wonderful stay!

My only suggestions for improvement at this already wonderful place are:
1. Bike hire could be charged for 24 hour periods, rather than per (calendar) day
2. Offering a hotel shuttle service for a nominal fee to the temples at say, 8am and 9am each day (there are no taxis floating around the new Bagan area and transportation can be quite expensive relative to other costs in Burma; we took a pick-up truck one day but it was about a 30-40min walk to where the pick-up trucks pass by which would normally be fine but not in the heat)
