“Serenity within old Bagan, lovely resort, naturally landscaped garden with widespread canopy provided by heritage acacia”

Less than 30 mins from airport, helpful reception and F&B staff. The hotel with its colorful gardens of different shrubbery and cobbled walkways is overwhelming. After checkin, porter insisted on taking our bags. Sadly, it was dragged along the undulant cobbled walkways oblivious of the possible damage to luggage wheels. Ironically the luggage trolleys were used to ferry heavy flower pots and soil instead of guest luggage. All rooms have wide balcony.

The hotel itself is charming, especially the Acacia Tree in their outdoor restaurant. Unfortunately mosquitoes infestation is so serious despite strong mossie repellant and mosquito coils that all 3 tables of diners that night retreated to rooms for dinner. Food was good. Regrettably to note that our tray of crockery that we left in the balcony after dinner was not cleared for 2 days although our room was cleaned daily. The table liners on our breakfast table were not washed or changed and had egg yolk stains. We were also perturbed by a guest complain of not fully cooked chicken.

June has been very hot so good air-conditioning is essential. However, the location of the aircon above the entrance and airflow directed into the toilet/bath room is ineffective to cool the inside and bed area in the room. The toilet/bath room door won’t stay shut as it has no normal 2-way knob type. To close the door one has to latch from the inside. This deadbolt is definitely a casualty in waiting during emergency.

It is a lovely hotel in a great heritage park and we will visit again.

Room Tip: We had a superior bungalow facing the gardens which is lovely and what suits u with a balcony. Ask f...

The grounds are BEAUTIFUL. you may not even want to go to the temples its so pretty. The location is good. The rooms are decent considering you are near the end of the earth. The history is great. In house prices for restaurant and bar a tad high. Room is comfortable though not luxurious, but very solid.

Only had two days, one night in Bagan however in late May/early June that was about enough as it was exceptionally hot, 45 degrees and 90% humidity. The Thande Hotel Bagan is in a great location, for both the temples especially in Old Bagan and the river views and gardens were exceptional. However the rooms we booked, Deluxe twin rooms, near the pool were very tired and in need of a good renovation. The rooms, of a weatherboard construction were old and very hot, the air/cond wasn't working too good at all and the strong sewerage smell in the bathroom was atrocious. We didn't sleep much at all due to the heat. The pool was uncomfortably hot, not cooling at all and there was a lot of 'left behinds' (droppings) all over the pool surrounds and furniture from the squirrels. Cute, but rather dirty, and everywhere.
Ample temples of all shapes and sizes to see but strongly suggest you get a guide to experience the best assortment, one who knows a bit about all. We used Exotissimo and had a great guide.

This is a good base for exploring the temples of Old Bagan. The Thande Hotel Bagan is located on the Irrawaddy River amongst beautiful grounds offering stunning sunset views (the first choice for a sunset view would be on top of one of the many temples; this would be a second must see). I stayed here for five days in a room that was very beautiful, nicely furnished with a comfortable bed. The bathroom was spacious including all the amenities, an abundance of thick towels and a big bathtub (though there was never enough hot water to even come close to taking a good soak). Otherwise the pool was very cool and provided a refreshing dip after a long day biking through the dusty trails of Bagan. The hotel restaurant served an unremarkable Chinese/ Western cuisine in a very clean kitchen with good service. I was taken aback by two incidences however. Though I understand the expectation one is to pay more in a resort there arises the question of value. Wanting to take a break from some of the spicy food for a day I requested a simple bowl of rice which was kindly delivered - at the cost of $7.50, the price of a typical lunch. The other observation was the inclusion of Shark’s Fin Soup on the menu. In a conversation with the F&B manager it’s hypocritical at best to work towards being an environmentally friendly hotel with an item like this on the menu. As in most of Myanmar the WiFi is very slow. I found the best WiFi reception to be in the lobby. This gave me the opportunity to view the hotel reception staff at work. Though there was always an abundance of staff available it seemed to me they never really knew what to do. Hopefully as Bagan gains even more in its ever increasing popularity hotel management can initiate an effective training program.

We stayed at this hotel with our family over New Year's Eve, so we had different types of rooms. We have stayed here on at least five other holidays, all but one time having one of the river view rooms. This time our sons had a room fairly close to the reception area with a sort of courtyard in front of the rooms. The feel of that part of the hotel was cramped and dark. We had a river view room which provides a relaxing porch area with a beautiful sunset view. Those rooms are large with wood paneling. They are not luxurious but pleasant and have large bathrooms. In the past we had a room between the reception area and the outdoor eating area which was perfectly nice and very similar to the river view rooms. Just no private relaxing porch from which to look at the river.
What makes this hotel special is the enormous acacia trees over the open air eating area. This year we saw three baby owls peaking out of a hole in one of the trees. I could sit there having breakfast for two hours looking out toward the river in this very spacious outdoor area. The breakfast buffet is varied, often including mohinga, along with Western choices and noodles.
The eating area is also beautiful at night, but we found the food to be rather bland and uninspired.
It is not very easy to eat dinner elsewhere, unless you go by bicycle or horse cart, both of which we have done. However, there is very little light at night which can make riding a bicycle back to the hotel a little nerve wracking. Be sure to bring headlights if you are considering doing this.
One night we ate dinner next door at the Bagan River View Hotel, which is just a couple of minutes walk away. The outdoor eating area there is also atmospheric and the dinner food much superior to the Bagan Thande, with comparable or cheaper prices.
We rented bicycles everyday from an independent stand directly across the street from the entrance to the Bagan River View Hotel. The prices there were a bit cheaper than at the Bagan Thande.
On previous trips we have checked out a number of the hotels in the Old Bagan area, which we prefer, looking at rooms and comparing prices. One year we tried staying at the Bagan River View Hotel. However, the next year we were back at the Bagan Thande. It seems to us to be the best hotel in the area for the money when you consider the large rooms, pleasant porch river views, beautiful trees, and manicured lawns. Just eat dinner next door. (Also avoid New Year's Eve when we had an obligatory dinner buffet costing $85 per person! I do understand , however, that other hotels have similar overpriced mandatory dinners on New Year's Eve and Christmas.)

I trully enjoyed staying in this hotel. Reception looked a bit modest but wide smile of receptionist beat it up. Me and my clients were staying in "cottages" (3 rooms in 1) with comfortable porch close to the river. Rooms were wide and nicely designed (I like natural bamboo look better than some classy glamour extra sterile with no soul look) with an warm atmosphere and homey feeling. Thanaka in the room was nice surprise, underlining traditions and spirit of Myanmar. Bathroom was spacious with an option of bath but shower as well. Swimming in the pool in the evening after the long super hot day felt so refreshing. Hotel also offers small traditional marionet show in the evenings (but it is better to go for some more pompous one, gives you richer experience). Breakfast are outside, in nice area right next to the Irrawady river when sun is slowly rising up with usual choices of food, nothing extraordinary (comparing to other hotels in Myanmar). Anyway the hotel area is situated in Old Bagan, close to the pagodas and being there felt like an Island of Peace to me.

Room Tip: Closer to the river

We are a senior couple who stayed here February 14-20, 2014. This hotel is located on the Irrawaddy River which offers some stunning views of the sunset, river life, and the hot air balloons in the morning. Hotel was booked for us by One Stop Travel & Tours. We had a superior double/twin room at $95 per night which included breakfast and all taxes.

Our room was S1029. Nothing fancy but it was comfortable. The only issue we had was one night someone in our block of rooms left their TV going all night so we did not get a good night's sleep. Our room had a small seating area and a porch with chairs and a table also. I enjoyed being able to take a bubble bath as the bathroom had a tub and there was plenty of hot water. A/C worked perfectly fine.

Breakfast was a buffet served in the Acacia Shade Restaurant. Tables are outside with a view of the Irrawaddy River. There is not a huge variety but enough choices whether you want a typical Western, European, or Asian meal. One day when we had rain breakfast was inside the Prince Restaurant.

There's the Panorama Bar for drinks and snacks with plenty of sitting areas looking out to catch the river sunset.

We wanted a hotel with a pool and the pool here was lovely. There were plenty of sun beds and it was nice to recharge after sightseeing in the heat.

The wifi here was intermittent. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Staff here were friendly even though most of them did not speak fluent English. But hey, my husband and I are in their country so I don't find any fault with that. We were able to make our needs/wants known.

We found a very nice driver with a car right by the hotel. We used him for transport for dinners and a side trip to Mt. Popa and Salay. He also took us to the boat jetty for our boat to Mandalay. There are also plenty of horse carts around by this hotel too. You can rent electric bikes but we didn't attempt that.

Lots of places are within reasonable walking distance-Gawdawpalin Pagoda, the Tharabar Gate, the Bagan Archaeological Museum.

We enjoyed our stay here and thought it was good value for the money. It wasn't luxurious but perfectly adequate since most of our time was spent, not in our room, but sightseeing.

Room Tip: You can pay more for a room with a view of the river. We didn't but it's nice to have that...
