I can't quite explain why, but my partner and I really loved Thiripyitsaya. We arrived mid afternoon in 43 degree heat after getting off a 20 hour train ride from Yangon. We were not sure what to expect from the hotel after travelling from Heho airport on the back of someone's truck, through very beautiful but arid terrain (we visited in May at the end of the dry season) but when we arrived we were amazed that such a lush, green, almost rainforest-like environment could exist.
The hotel is right on the Irrawaddy which means it's not really walking distance from much, but taxis are available. It was definitely worth being out on the river for us, just for the beautiful views. Sitting in the pool at sunset looking over the river, the mountains and some distant pagodas was a real sight, absolutely relaxing.
There is no denying the rooms need a bit of an upgrade. The bedroom itself was basic but quite nice with wooden beams and high ceilings and a very comfy bed. The bathroom, however, was like something from my Nan's house 20 years ago, I've never encountered a hotel bathroom that looked like that! We really didn't mind as the grounds were so beautiful, the staff were so attentive, an the overall feel of the hotel was so lovely. We could see squirrels, bright blue lizards and amazing birds from our deck and there were many tropical plants and flowers, lots to look at.
Some other reviewers have mentioned the food was of a low standard - we did not find that at all! We ate breakfast at the hotel every day and had a couple of dinners as well as some snacks by the pool. We loved everything we ate and found the prices to be very reasonable. I had a dish of Myanmar lobster and sea bass for $24.00 USD which was extremely tasty. Be warned though - they make their drinks super strong!
As we visited in low season, we paid approx. $80.00 USD per night with breakfast and taxes included. It was excellent value, we loved being there and found it a beautiful sanctuary away from the heat and dust of Old Bagan. If you are not concerned with having the fanciest room in the world, but instead want to stay somewhere with a lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, an amazing pool and breathtaking views, I would highly recommend this hotel.
